Melo is such a great passer when he wants to be ... which isn't all that often ... but still, he can do it at a high level

Melo going one on one isn't a problem. Last night proves it. He roasted the greatest defender in the game. Miami had LeBron (or Wade) on him one on one all night. The problem comes when Melo tries to take on double and triple teams.
It might not be pretty, but I'd let Melo shoot every time if he wasn't getting double teamed. When he makes quick decisions and only has one defender on him, hes unstoppable.
When his shots are falling and we string together some wins, it's ok... Wait until the opposite happens, then everyone will be crying melo ball all over again. He gets single teamed all the time and people are whining over his shots. Make up your minds people.
I criticised him earlier in the season, so it's only right I complement him now- he's been playing really well lately. In Dec he shot 48% FG and 45% from 3, and in January he's shooting 47% FG and 53% from 3. Great to see- hope he can keep this up! (I worry about his shoulder)

Steals are the same and scoring efficiency is the same (largely because his FTs per game are down). The significant differences are rebounds and turnovers.

Melo is a net +16 per 100 possessions this year (+7 on O, -9 on D surprisingly) – that is outrageously good. To give you an idea how good, Lebron was a net +18/100 poss last year after having one of the best years by any player ever basically. Last year, he was without a doubt the centerpiece of the #3 offense in the league, and was essentially a net neutral on defense. This year, it’s without question that he’s worth every penny – they’d probably have 2 wins instead of 11 if he was out all year.btw compare to Dwight Howard, who was everyone’s favorite offseason signing, basically making the same $ as Melo. So far this year Howard has been amazing on defense — a net -10 (in a good way) points/100 poss when he’s on the floor. But he’s been just as bad on offense – a net -10 on offense per 100 poss – mostly because he basically refuses to run PNR which he’s great at, which could be analogous to Melo insisting on midrange Js. And it’s not just this year that he hasn’t been great on O -Dwight was a net neutral on offense last year with the Lakers (granted he was injured in the beginning of the year). Does anyone think Howard isn’t worth the money even though he’s basically a net even or negative on 1 end of the floor, not to mention you can’t play him in crunch time because he’s so horrible from the FT line?

Be careful about endorsing +/-. There's a lot of brutal data from Melo's career to explain.
I might give it a little weight, but it would be low - in PER, FG% territory.
The best basketball I have seen Melo play was the first half of the Mavs game...Great all around half of basketball...
