Knicks · If you had to choose for the future, Tim Hardway JR or Giannis Antetokuounmpo (page 1)
He is really young with a lot of upside but a lot of work, development needed ahead of him
Currently Tim Hardaway JR is the better basketball player today, he is much better than I thought he was in the PRO level, he also improved much since summer league/start of the season
Obviously JR is going to be a very good shooter, a Ray Allen but needs to learn how to move without the ball in catch and shoot situations like RIP improved drastically by watching Reggie Miller
He has a great quick release, is quicker, stronger, and more athletic than I thought he would be in the pro level this early in his career
I see him giving much effort in DEF, putting pressure on guards, and trying to push the ball, grab rebounds, but he could still improve on this area
Regardless, I think he actually was a steal for us and I was wrong about him
I am now even questioning if I could go back and draft Giannis Antetokounmpo or Tim Hardaway JR, who should I choose?
Because of his age, upside, possibility to still grow to possibility 7foot +, add more skills, room for improvement, I think I will still pick Antetokounmpo, even though he is still a baby
You cannot teach what he has, guard skills, HUGE hands, ability to penetrate, decent athleticism to go with great length, and his potential is virtually untapped
I believe we will not get a sense of what kind of player he will become till at least 2-3 years later till he at least fills out his body a bit.
He is a gamble a bit vs Hardaway JR but the upside is just too high for me to pass as good as Hardaway JR has been looking
Was wondering what you guys thought about the two players in comparison?
I figure as of right now, having Caron Butler and Ilyasova (another skilled F with length that played in Europe first, which the game is approached very differently) as decent mentors to him. Also Carlos Delfino is another TOUGH Euro player than can guide him and help him with his shot, if he can improve his shot to half of Durant's confidence, he will be a very good player. Also I think Marion would be another great mentor, something teams don't seem to emphasize enough of compared to the NBA in the 80s-90s
Anyone know when is younger brother is eligible to be drafted?
He would have been a great STASH player if we had a 2nd round pick to utilize?
Would anyone here go for him or his younger brother?
I see him as the SF/PF with the ability to give PG and SG's a nightmare by the time he learns how to use his body, physical abilities, combined with skills
I was really hoping we would have somehow moved up to grab Giannis Antetokounmpo or allow him to drop all the way to us
but
Tim Hardaway JR looks to be better than I thought he would be
I was wrong about him, I thought Glen Rice JR would be the better pick due to his body build
I thought Tim Hardaway JR would be a gunner, but not as athletic, shorter, smaller, than JR Smith, but without the headaches/immaturity which makes a big difference
With Iman, JR playing his best last season, I thought SG is the least position we needed to address, with Gobert still on the board who I think could also be risk/reward guy, like Jeremy Tyler was with Iman Shumpert's draft, who I wanted Vuvuvic only over Iman and not Faried because 6-4 PF with a 6-9 C in STAT just wouldn't make sense *it was the lock out year, so Billups was expected to be part of the team, and Tyson Chandler was not thought to be available*
back on Giannis Antetokounmpo
Though I think Giannis Antetokounmpo's potential is incredibialy high with his combination of HUGE hands *DR. Jay had HUGE HANDS despite being 6'4*, length, athleticism, and guard skills/handle
We would need a coaching staff that actually values development and have to bring in a mentor/player but he has the tools to be a huge hit or a big bust, but it was a good selection considering where he was selected for reward/gamble
He will likely take at least 2-3 full years to fill up his body and develop, needing much work with at least 2 years before we can get an idea what positions he could play, but he does have the handle, passing ability, defensive ability, to be a 2 way player
Unfortunately, we don't believe in developing players, if he does begin to show his potential, we might have traded him for Kobe Bryant in 2 years, thats the NYK way
Will he be between Scotty Pippen, Durant (doesn't have his shooting touch but his body build), Paul George, Rudy Gay, Tmac, Battum, Trevor Ariza, James Johnson, or a Hakeem Warrick, I don't know
but
he will likely be able to defend 3-4 positions if he does become an NBA player, possible a lock down defender if he builds his body properly with the right training
He cannot lose is mobileness/finess, he isn't going to be a Lebron type player as in DOMINANCE
but
he has a younger brother I believe, with a similar body build
He should train with Durant's trainers because of their similarities in body builds
Kevin Durant might be a toothpick but he is NOT weak and plays VERY STRONG on the court, he utilizes his length, quickness, athleticism, and core strength very well
I didn't think he would be such a great all round player that he is now and not get dominated playing the PF position
In fact, he can actually even play C at times, I think Durant is actually skinny strong, if that makes any sense at all
But this youngster has A LOT OF WORK AHEAD of him, just like Paul George and Tmac, they were not "big contributors" and didn't have a position till later in their careers
Paul George played SG when he is now a true SF that could play SF/PF with SG abilities, just 2 years ago it was still Danny Grangers team and it was Granger vs Melo when Indiana played, while Chandler vs Hibbert, and Lance Stephenson was glued to the bench as Fields was the "steal of the draft"
Funny how much things change in 2 years
Chandler > Hibbert
Melo > Granger and Paul George *I said Paul George was better last season already watching his performance in the playoffs*
Fields > Lance Stephenson
STAT (>> for half the season) >=< David West (he is the tough guy, undersized a bit, but is a true TOUGH VET
but tides have changed dramatically
And to answer Playa, that is why YOUTH is so IMPORTANT
Younger players have higher potentials, although not all will reach their ceilings, you cannot stop believing in drafting instead opting to BUY talent all the time
There is only so much you are allowed to spend with this CBA, you need to be able to find steals, one way or another, with picks, good signings, trades, etc....
Every team that has won in the league or even contenders for many years, have either developed through youth, or used their youth/picks as assets to trade for a older ALL STAR with generally expirings and a combination of 1-3 picks, depending on if they are 2 way ALL STARS and age
Youth can bring the greatest return as assets, costs (especially with this CBA), as foundations/core, and because of (their contracts are low if not top 3 pick) it allows you to use the $$$ elsewhere while your 1-4m contract player can produce just as high as a 15m+ player, making timing VERY IMPORTANT in building a team
We cannot predict injuries, how a player sometimes fits/develops, and how their potential matches up to higher competition
Sometimes, by being picked later than they thought they should have, they work harder on to develop their games, sometimes with the right combination of talents/coaches/systems/vets
So ultimately how a player develops is up NOT just up to the player but his surroundings, some of which has no control over, in additional to their talent/potential/ceilings/risk and reward
Some players are content with one contract like Eddy Curry or Jerome James
And sometimes you get it right consecutively like OKC, hitting it big, or even Larry Bird and Isiah Thomas had some success in rather late picks
Lets not forget players sometimes get better contracts by getting drafted in the 2nd round or not drafted at all like Jeremy Lin, Gilbert Areanas, and Isiah Thomas (The King's PG)
to answer youre question, im fine with picking timmy over greekfreak. Hes a traditionally scoring SG that im used to and i would feel safe betting on

I'm just calling him Giannis. You are looking at the future of the game. Just turned 19, amazing handle and energy. Haven't seen his jumper, but I would be moving his family to my house if I was an owner. Barring injury, this kid is gonna be a monster.

lance kind of blew up late, but people, most were well aware of his upside..
I don't think i would have said last year, chandler over hibbert..
But I see what you are saying.. these things were said, or hinted, and boy how they have changed..

STAT (>> for half the season) >=< David West (he is the tough guy, undersized a bit, but is a true TOUGH VET
I never thought most if any of those things.. I never thought carmelo was better than paul george alone last year..
lance kind of blew up late, but people, most were well aware of his upside..
I don't think i would have said last year, chandler over hibbert..
But I see what you are saying.. these things were said, or hinted, and boy how they have changed..
And to answer Playa, that is why YOUTH is so IMPORTANTBINGO!!
when comparing all the players above, I was talking about Tyson Chandler's 1st year in NYK, when Iman Shumpert was still a rookie
That was only 2.5 seasons ago
Playa, yoots don't win themselves, they are a piece to the puzzle,
Much like one player doesn't win a championship, the entire team needs to produce, even the role players
The point is players that are under rookie contract's are either developed to be the Tony Parker, Manu, Bynums, or used as assets to acquire KG to Boston, Ray Allen to Boston, Rasheed
Wallace and Ben Wallace to Detroit, Prince/Affalo/Okur
picks = assets
drafted developed players are under rookie contracts, allowing you to spend the money elsewhere to acquire talent
Spur's was build on their draft picks, contenders for over a decade with consintency, won multiple times
Laker's acquired Pau Gasol with Marc Gasol and cap space, in addition to drafting Bynum, in addition to building with Kobe and Shaq the first time around, and have won multiple times
I showed you how Boston used draft picks to compete for a couple of years and have won
I showed you how Detroit competed for a couple of years as contenders and won
Pacer's core has been built with rookies, none of which are even top 5 picks, they have made it to game 7 in the ECF 3 years in a row, with a bright future,
==============
George Hill *traded for with rights to Kawaii Leanard*
Paul George
Lance Stephenson
Hibbert
OKC didn't win but they have been contenders for much of the past seasons
====
Westbrook
Harden (turned to Lamb, Steven Adams, and still picks coming)
Durant
Ibaka
Nick Collison
Reggie Jackson
Perry Jones
Jeff Green used in trade
Houston Rockets
================
collected assets, recycling assets, got Harden *which lead to D12 and a core*
Drafted Parsons
Drafted Terrence Jones
Signed D12
DRAFT PICKS and YOOTS are needed shown above to contend, era after era
going back further, I don't need to name all the players drafted
Jordan/Pippen/Kukoc/ many of their ROLE PLAYERS Bulls
Lakers Magic Johnson, Kareem
Detroit with "BAD BOYS"
Celtics "with Bird, McHale, Parish"
You hold no value in draft picks, I get it, but Dynasty's have been build repetitively around draft picks development, or/and used to compete for short amount of years to acquire proven talent with CAP SPACE and DRAFT PICKS
History tells you that you are wrong, I have provided examples with Dynasties with yoots, era's, and short term contending teams to buy talent with draft picks for proven players with the recent Celtics, Pistons, Laker's with without SHAQ
YOOT's don't win, themselves, they are just needed to BUILD A CONTENDING TEAM, you can only sign so much talent, Wade was drafted by the Heat and the trio was the main reason they won that was a RARE chance to retool 3 ALL STAR's in one season
But even Wade, Chalmers/Cole, Haslem, in addition to the draft picks they used in order use the MLE for
And that is why 2015 is so important, with our lack of draft picks, we need to continue to collect talent in draft picks, and then SIGN a core in 2015 much like the Heat did in order for us to contend
We are unable to currently to contend because
Amare
Melo
Tyson
both make up the entire salary cap themselves, limiting our ability to acquire talent with flawed players, and that is why every year we need to pray for vet min steals and trade for garbage that their own team doesn't even want and still collect assets for them
Lebron is great but he even couldn't do it himself in Cleveland despite triple double numbers with 30+ pts games
Kobe was unable to do without a core of players, once with shaq and role players, and then with Bynum, Gasol, and even Odom Ariza/MWP playing vital roles
His BEST CAREER YEAR, lead him to the lottery to get Bynum, scoring multiple amazing 50+ games and performances that year for a top 10 pick
And that is why you cannot pay Melo if we want to contend, because he cannot win without a core, and we cannnot build or buy a core around him if he is going to take 1/2 the cap first
So the answer is to trade Melo with the rest of the team to empty salary beyond 2015 and collect as many assets that draft picks so we can spend the $$$ to on FA to build a core

I love THjr as much as the next Knicks fan and yes he is currently more polished than Giannis A. HOWEVER, Giannis' probably has the highest upside in the league right now. He has the chance to be ridiculously good. He has physical gifts which are unmatched and already has a nice stroke and handle (and he's what 6'11"?!?). And he's only been playing for a couple years I believe. If he puts it all together he's going to be a monster.
Seeing Thjr I see his determination and killer instinct. Kid wants to be good too. I can see him starting at the 2 next year if the coach gives him a chance and put up 14pts per.
So it's a wash to me. The knicks really could use both.
