Jackson certainly has the stature to take this risk on. He can hire guys to scout and hp him get under the cap, and he knows what a championship team looks like. If Dolan can keep his big nose out of the way and let Jackson work, that's the important step.
Uncle Phil
“Phil, as it is, is an anti-establishment guy. He’s a free spirit, he says whatever is on his mind and he is a fascinating guy. Dolan might promise him that he’ll leave him alone, there’ll be a honeymoon period, [but] there’s no way that can last. … It would be very difficult for Phil to work in the environment that is set up at the Garden. That’s the most succinct way I can put it.”
“Why’d (Donnie Walsh) leave? Everybody leaves. There’s a reason. Dolan’s [the reason]
“It’s very difficult under those conditions. People can’t talk to the media, and they really need a front person because they put it all on Mike Woodson whenever anything happens and that’s wrong. The coach shouldn’t have to deal with these other issues. It should be the general manager or the owner of the team.”

The only way Dolan will leave Knicks alone if he already sucked out all live out of this pure franchise.
If he still need some endorsements from CAA for his band to worm up Eagles and such he will continue to abuse Knicks again and again Phil on no-Phil.

you know.. I love Marv, loved him doing the Knicks, but he's wrong here. I mean the guy was paid by MSG and quite well. I know those were horrible teams to watch and announce for, but you cant trash the bosses team like he did. I mean this is just the real world talking here. Some may respect him more for "calling it like he saw it" and thats cool, but he acted all suprised.
Sprewell was a free spirit also and he did OK here.
Phil will have to manage Dolan, just like everyone else in the real world has to manager their bosses. Whoop de doo.
I think it's a joke so many media and bball people are desperately campaigning and imploring Phil not to come here- Marv Albert, George Karl, larry brown etc etc- has any other team had this sort of attempted manipulation?
Personally I'm wary of the move- is Phil 100% committed? I like the idea of limiting Dolans input and getting rid of Mills, but as long as Dolan plans on intervening with his mindless crap there doesn't seem any point!
Just my impression of PJax is that he's a man who has a lot of personal pride. That to me says that he's putting all of that on the table and challenging himself with a new career. Being the head man for a very storied franchise and one with such a strong personal significance, I can't see him taking this lightly. I think he'll put his all into this job. I think he'll be respected by anyone he talks to and that is a plus for this organization. EVERYONE wants a bit of that knowledge and championship magic Phil has. We haven't had that kind of experience in our front office and i'm willing to give Phil a clean slate and trust to see how he envisions building a title team.
Love it. And even if it all ends horribly, the Zen Master will just proceed with finally spilling all the Dolan beans in his next book.

I much as I detest Dolan, when Isiah was putting us into cap hell Dolan pretty much stepped aside and let Zeke do his thing. He's left Sather alone for over a decade. Although we all know that the Knicks are more important to Dolan than the Rangers it makes me think that Dolan is capable of stepping aside, especially for a guy who has the resume of Jax.
Dolan is a jerk but he is loyal jerk. Just think of all the dumb moves the man has made over the years, especially with coaches. I can't see Jackson coming to us being bad in any way, especially when considering that Jackson must have laid down the law.
All I can say is that it will be interesting to see what happens once Phil is introduced.
Jackson wants Melo to stay if he comes on board
win / win situation, if he comes of course:
A
We succeed
B
We fail, he gets fired, he will open is mouth on Dolan, and people care for what Pjax has to say
PS
JUST SIGN ALREADY!

at what price? Certainly not a max extension. Maybe he wants Melo to not opt out.

I think he just wants Melo. There are only a handful of guys that good and he knows it. Good place to start.

So you would sign him to a max?
I think this whole Phil wants Melo thing is media BS. If Phil wants Melo, sign on the dotted line and sell Melo on staying. I think Phil is smart enough to know that the Knicks have no control over Melo's decision.

I think if you consider not signing Lin to a 15 mil deal in his final year that would cost the knicks 65 mil in penalties a mistake then not signing melo to a max deal is a huge mistake. Obviously management should attempt to negotiate a deal that allows the team more flexibility but if he pushes for the max I think they have to sign him. That isn't an Amare contract or even a Tyson/Bargs deal. Melo is one of the best guys in the league right now. A team like the Knicks, trying to overcome tremendous mismanagement in the past and dysfunction from ownership and players needs to hold onto the one guy that is respected among his peers and in the league.

eeeeeeesh - The only reason that I would have signed Lin (though painfully) is that he would not cut into the 2015 cap space. I could care less how much Dolan would pay him in 2014.
Given Melo the max is extremely dangerous and would handcuff us. That is not knocking him, Lebron took less, hopefully Melo would realize that this would be detrimental to winning.
Anyway, lets see what Phil does (if there is a Phil which with everyday seems a bit less likely). I trust that he is no dummy.

Melo has said he would take less. However, there is no state or city income tax in Miami so LBJ actually takes home more than Melo even though he took less gross salary.

Haha! You are already making excuses as to why its ok when he does not take less.
Melo is having a very good season though locking him up at the max IMHO with be the dumbest thing that we can do since the last dumbest thing we did.
Have we learned anything?? Or still just about the starphuck?
There is no way that Phil is dumb enough to do this unless as some have stated, that he is just here for the cash grab.
I bet that Phil and Jimmy are a bit far apart about keeping Melo (at any price) and that is holding up the deal.
Jimmy: Phil, I'll give you 20 million per and you can have any city dancer at any time
Phil: nice! How about Melo?
Jimmy: Phil, I am a business man and its all about the jerseys. Max it is, deal?
Phil: Hah! Go phuck yourself you little prick! Don't you want the best chance of winning or do you want to sell jerseys?
Jimmy: Ok 25 million?
Phil: no
Jimmy: What will it take?
Phil: one sec, got a click from the Lakers, call you back
CRICKETS
Jimmy: Hello, Patrick? How would you like to be a GM? The offer is 2 million per year and you promise to never talk, at all?
Patrick: Hells yeah!
Jimmy: Ok, Herb will be excited to work under you!
