Knicks · Mark Jackson Dysfunction (page 1)

In what's become an increasingly dysfunctional atmosphere, Golden State Warriors coach Mark Jackson has forced a reassignment of assistant coach Brian Scalabrine, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Ownership and management have been strong advocates of Scalabrine and his performance on the job, sources told Yahoo Sports. Nevertheless, Warriors officials decided that as long as Jackson is the head coach, he'll have control of his coaching staff.

It is immediately unclear what kind of a role to which the Warriors will transition Scalabrine, but management has no intention of letting him leave the organization, sources said.

Over the past two years, Jackson's difficulty with managing his coaching staff and creating a functional work environment has developed into one of the issues that threatens his future on the job, league sources said.

Scalabrine, who joined the staff in July, was Jackson's choice as an assistant coach. For two straight years, Jackson has had issues with assistant coaches that he hired. Michael Malone and Jackson would go weeks without speaking to each other a year ago, league sources said. Malone left Golden State to become the head coach of the Sacramento Kings.

Jackson, in his third year at the helm of the Warriors, has one year left on his contract, but has come under increased scrutiny within the organization for how he has run the team and worked on the job. There have been no conversations about an extension for Jackson – nor are they expected to take place, sources said.

Jackson, 48, had tried and failed to get involved with several head-coaching openings over the past several months, including the Los Angeles Clippers and Brooklyn Nets, league sources said.

Scalabrine, 36, had an 11-year NBA playing career. He had been offered a chance to join Tom Thibodeau's coaching staff with the Chicago Bulls after finishing his playing career there in 2012, but elected to try broadcast media for a year. He had come to Jackson's staff highly recommended by Thibodeau.

Golden State is 44-27 and the sixth seed in the Western Conference.

I have read a bunch of articles recently about Jackson and GS. Things do not look good for him in GS.

fishmike @ 3/25/2014 4:58 PM
which begs to wonder why? I havent seen enough GS to know if he's a good coach.

Their record seems a reflection of their talent. They are good. Might even should have a better record. Some picked them to win a title.

I would love if MJax somehow could come back to the Knicks. With Phil in place that probably doesn't happen. The Warriors are 19 games over .500 and if they are rolling going into the playoffs they have the potential to do a lot of damage. I have read some of the articles about Mjax but I also have heard there is nothing to it.

System coach.....Jackson seems like he's a Mike Woodson clone with the stuff written about him.

We should look at guys that run an established system

gunsnewing @ 3/25/2014 5:23 PM
Yea good at holding guys accountable but not x & o's guy. And not a Phil guy

Woodson is good at neither

What? Woody doesn't hold players accountable?

I saw him yelling at prigs once

Woodson is good at neither

Jackson has his own beliefs and he's strong minded so i think he would clash here The same way he's cladding in gs

franco12 @ 3/25/2014 5:51 PM
oddly reminiscent of Kidd & Frank.

As long as he's getting the players to perform, and he is not making enemies with them, he is fine.

never thought mark jackson should have went into coaching straight from the booth without earning his stripes as an assistant. he might know the game of basketball, but it's evident he doesn't know how to run a team.

His team is 44-27. They beat the Nuggets in the first round lastr and gave the Spurs trouble in the second round last year. His team has been successful. I don't think his people skills change much working under someone. His team is successful.

Being 19 games over .500 is indicative of not "know(ing) how to run a team"? If that's the case, 75% of the league's coaches are bums.

He has a talented team oriented squad.

Curious to see how good he would be with our mess. After a month we would be calling for his head.

To be fair, our mess won 54 games last season with only minor tweaks and changes. There is no guarantee that talent wins games (see the Elton Brand Clippers of yore).

Aside from Jason Kidd being substituted by Beno Udrih and Andrea Bargnani for Steve Novak, what is different about our rotation?

You underestimate veteran leadership--Kidd, Rasheed, Kurt Thomas. Aside from the obvious injuries, this team is talented enough to be at the top of the Atlantic. They suffer from laziness, stupidity, and lack of focus. They have no leader. When they give effort for 48 mins they can compete with anyone. They started the season thinking they're better than they are and didn't have the urgency to play hard every night, and once the losses started piling up, they panicked because they don't have a leader.

Veteran leadership. And, kidds efficiency numbers for the first part of the year were magnificent.

JR also started the/his year like horsesh1t after he came back. That killed us.

Why do you think there is such a drastic change in our records between the two years?

toad @ 3/25/2014 7:01 PM
And, another great thing about having Phil is that we don't have to entertain the likes of Mark Jackson as a coach. Dolan would've loved him.

Also, what winning team has a back court as bad as ours?
