Knicks · Lovely article on Stoudemire in NYT by Araton (page 2)

Probably the worst move the knicks have ever made.
I didn't mind the signing as long as we took the proper precautions. I still don't understand why Donnie didn't frontload Amare's contract. That would've helped to stagger the long term risk of signing a guy we knew was going to breakdown. And using the amnesty on Billups was stupid from the start; that should've been saved for Amar'e. Had Donnie Walsh not been such a puss and we just kept Corey Brewer, we could've involved his contract in a sign and trade that would've allowed us to get Tyson Chandler while keeping Billups and preserving our amnesty. That one, seemingly minor move, fucked us during the Carmelo era.
He couldn't have front loaded. He got the max each year - Amare hit the lotto. There is always is that 1 idiot/sucker and guess who that was?
The Tyson/CB move was an utter disaster and the same phucking gamblers/starphuck mentality. Complete horse sh1t. We also outbid ourselves as usual for Tyson, there was really no market for him (at that price).
So we sign Amare (disaster), NBA gives us this amnesty gift to clean up exxon valdez, we use it on our most efficient player and so badly needed expiring PG and start the year by giving a PG coach Toney Phucking Douglass as our starter.
You can't make this sh1t up and what is even crazier is that fans actually defend this crap.

I think your being a little ungreatfull. When someone one comes through for you when your down and out, you don't kick them to the curb when your back on top. We had 10 yrs of hard to watch basketball. Signing amare was a no brainer
You seem like you would hve been content with gallo, lee and chandler winning an avg of 40 games a season. Yeah we would have had cap space, but honestly since amare has gotten here, what big name FA did we miss out on because of cap space.
David Lee
DRAGIC
Chris Paul
Dwight Howard
Paul MilsapPick any, but that is not even the point. We don't need tier 1's. We need to build an efficient team not blow the bank on Amare when the only offer he got was 3 years to remain in PHX. His crash was not that hard to predict.
Amare came through for us? How by giving us a half of a good season of a 5 year cap killer?
Fans follow their hearts way too much. Do you think that the knicks brass thinks that they made a huge mistake?
Dude that is the ultimate bull sht (his crash was easy to predict) how in the world can you say that..You think donnie was dumb enogh to sign a player who had 6 months left in his tank for a 100 mill.
Howard never ever wanted to play in ny
Dragic is a good player, but the suns are not elite, and no ones flocking over there to play with him
Milsap, you mean the guy on the stuggling hawks
chris paul wasn't coming over here to play with gallo and chandler, and after getting melo we had nothing to offer in a trade..
Ultimate BS? Why was he not insured? Why did teams not tender offers?
I would take Dragic over any of our players. Dude is great! Who says a team has to be elite? They are playing solid bball at 43-29 I would give my left nut for that record and him as our PG.
I find it funny how fans globally measure a teams success by one player. Its a "team".

Aside from Paul Millsap, none of the players you mentioned signed with their new teams outright; they were traded, either before their contract expired or during the offseason.

What has melo done since he's gotten here, other than get the knicks more national televise games
Except consistently get a lottery team to the playoffs? The better question is to wonder how we pissed away $50-$70 million on shitty role/complementary players that can't help a guy as good as Melo.

If you were to evaluate from that point until this recent winning streak then Amare as been an abomination. You can blame it on injuries if you want but it does not matter. Staying healthy is part of the job. Jordan would not have been Jordan if he was not healthy enough to make his legacy.
Jordan was Jordan because he was one of the rare exceptions to stay healthy in spite of the stress that superstars regularly endure. We can't fault Amare for not being like Jordan because aside from Kobe (and probably LeBron), no one has been able to lay claim to that.

Anyone with a basic understanding of how the human body works would know that Amare was a ticking time-bomb. Not only were his injuries profuse, they were persistent. That doesn't bode well with added stress from being the only star on a team or with age.

You could frontload a max deal. All that would've happened is that the payment structure would be reversed. There was talk of that happening to dissuade the Suns from upping their ante but I suppose that Walsh balked to add the star-studded package of Ronny Turiaf, Keleena Azubuike and Anthony Randolph.

I heard Amare publicly make those comments. I liked the Felton signing at the time (even though I was rooting for Mike Conley or Ramon Sessions) but longer term, anyone would've been better than Felton.

Amare came to NY and to a young team, got off to an unbelievable start... had the knicks headed to the playoffs with a 28-26 record... Basketball was exciting in NY again, there were draft picks available, picks, it was starting to turn around.. amare said all of the right things... it was a sign of better things to come...
The injuries robbed him of his explosiveness, that he can't help... He gets love because he comes across as a more genuine dude, on and off the court...
