Knicks · Melo MRI: tear in right labrum (page 1)

smackeddog @ 4/15/2014 6:29 PM
There goes his bargaining power. Will avoid surgery and see if it heals in a month. Ridiculous we left the MRI until now- looks like we were doomed even if we made the playoffs...

What are the chances of getting the same injury at the same time of the year?!

gunsnewing @ 4/15/2014 6:33 PM
If it's just a slight year he will be ready for camp. He had the same thing on the other shoulder last offseason. It doesn't change anything he will still get his max money from the Knicks. Just not other teams
holfresh @ 4/15/2014 6:33 PM
I think they knew longer than this, he was just playing thru it..Also, I don't see how this changes any bargaining power he had...
nixluva @ 4/15/2014 6:37 PM
Melo shoots a lot, rebounds hard and puts ups a lot of shots under the basket and he gets hit a lot across the arms. Makes sense he would be showing signs of wear in the shoulders. They do say that the surgery doesn't guarantee that range of motion will be the same. The 1st step is always rest and see if things improve on their own before any surgery. Hope it gets taken care of and is a success.
knicks1248 @ 4/15/2014 6:41 PM
Maybe this will get him to pass more, but he had similar issue last year and he's coming of his best season this yr
TeamBall @ 4/15/2014 6:41 PM
Does that make it labrum tears in both shoulders now?

Tears in both shoulders is not good- he didn't have surgery so will always be more susceptible to re injuring them- having this injury twice indicates a high chance of it happening again, and if it does its season ending stuff. Factor in his age, and the fact that it means another season where he starts slowly (it took him about a month or two to get going), and I'd say this will cost him some money.

Yep- pretty much a year to the day- spooky!

YUP! I'm pretty sure Phil is taking this into consideration. IMO this is a small issue right now that could be addressed by having a better scheme in place that lowers his workload during the season and saves him for the post season. His usage rate and minutes are WAY too high. There was NO REASON to have him log such heavy minutes.

The reason was Woodson!

Well we all know who is responsible for that. I'm just hoping this isn't going to be a reoccurring problem. They're saying this one doesn't require surgery but his other shoulder could've had surgery performed on it and he decided against it.
dk7th @ 4/15/2014 6:55 PM
yikes he's got shoulders broken down like a 50-year old man. that's damaged goods on an nba level. hooray for bullyball it has really paid off, right melo? time to get rid of him is now, while there are still takers.

thank goodness for this report now it should make it easier for jackson to play hardball-- 12-14 million and if you must, hold your nose and pay him a bunch more next year and then far less when it comes time to pick up a free agent. ronron has been insisting on this, i believe-- or let him go.

that way, either way, knicks win. nobody should take issue with this approach but i am sure some intrepid but perhaps foolhardy soul will try....

He's scared of surgery, so like last year he'll take the chance and see if it heals naturally. No guarantee, but I suppose it worked last year- wonder if there will be a clearer picture before he's a free agent.

He increased his shot total in the playoffs last year by nearly 10shots while grimacing after every brick

Too bad. Look at his opting out as a gift and let someone else pay him.
nixluva @ 4/15/2014 7:13 PM
Maybe if we had a coach that had a system in place to include more ball and player movement Melo wouldn't be able to jack so many shots even if he wanted to. This was a case of a star player who wants to score and a coach not good enough nor talented enough to find a way to say no to that star but convince him that his plan for the rest of the team would work. Since the team was playing so bad it just fed into Melo feeling he needed to do more.

Also remember that part of Melo's injury is likely due to his rebounding and put backs on which he receives most of the hard hits. If he was only jacking jumpers there is almost no damage done doing that. It's the more rugged part of his game that is likely to be the cause of his injuries. I would love to see Melo in a Triangle offense where he could get a lot more assists and help his teammates to score more easy baskets.

This is a ploy to gain sympathy. When I watch him through my TV I can tell he is not really hurt.

I think it is also a case of teammates not being good enough and one guy having to do too much. Not sure why management never addressed the horrible guard play but there rarely was another scoring threat on the floor with melo. I do agree that the triangle should help and with a system and different teammates melo shouldn't have to take the beating he did this year.

There were so many games that we lost not because we didn't have enough talent, but we just played HORRID technical BB. Poor decisions. Slow reaction time, lack of preparation or game plan from Woodson.

HORRID Guard play was the biggest problem this year. For most of the year JR, Shump and Felton were all shooting at or below 40%. You simply can't have that. Still there was something else that could've been done. You can't just keep doing the same thing over and over despite all evidence that it doesn't work.

Simply replacing Felton with a better player would've made a huge difference. It's not like it would've taken much to play better than him. Felton was putrid and so were JR and Shump, but Felton was a huge blow cuz his play effects other as well as the PG.

uuhhhh he's been playing the vaunted "bullyball" by his own choice his entire career. not sure what that has to do with his teammates, superior, inferior or otherwise. please... do try to wriggle your way out of that. lets avoid painting him as a martyred hero. he has never been a crafty player and now it has caught up with him. time to give him the heave-ho if he doesn't settle on 12-14 per. that's all the knicks should do with him or tell him "thank you so much you've meant a great deal to james dolan and his fellow basketball ignorami"
