Knicks · Steve Kerr never played in New York. Why not interview several coaches. Hey why not Patrick Ewing or who else can we name> (page 1)

Patrick Ewing is a knicks Blue blood not Kerr. I just hope that Jackson interview several coaches and give Ewing a chance to interview. What do you think? And remmember I would rather have Phil coaching but since that won't happen and everyone is saying he wants Kerr I say why not Ewing? I think he paid his dues.

gunsnewing @ 4/21/2014 7:19 PM
I didn't know Ewing was familiar with the triangle and had an association with Phil. Ha learn something new everyday.
knicks1248 @ 4/21/2014 7:24 PM
Ewing!! no way..love the guy, but no thanks..I'll give him herbs spot for sure
NardDogNation @ 4/21/2014 7:28 PM
...'cause Patrick Ewing sounds like a moron, anytime he speaks in an interview. It doesn't seem like he has the cognitive abilities to be a head coach, which might be why no team has ever offered him a position.
gunsnewing @ 4/21/2014 7:29 PM
I think he paid his dues and deserves a shot in the NBA. Was surprised Jordan did not hire him but he hired Clifford and it worked out for him tenfolds. If Ewing wanted an assistant job with the Knicks he would've been here ready

He is very intellectual. Just doesn't express himself as well with words. Not uncommon for someone who switched countries early in life. Also John Thompson was over protective of him. Didn't really help prepare him for NBA interactions off the court

Why are you calling the man a moron? He left everything out on the court for the Knicks. The man went 4 years to college. Maybe you are profiling that anyone who dosen't speak the way you wan't them then they are stupid. What would it be like if I said Kerr looks like a weakling and a chump. Now that would be wrong because I am viewing him the way in my mind as I see him.

They speak English in Jamaica too. I just don't think Pat is that bright.

Just because he "left it all out on the court", doesn't mean that he isn't dim-witted. Him going to college doesn't mean much either, especially as an athlete. The Huffington Post and several other media outlets had a story a few months back about how several UNC football players were barely literate and how this is a pervasive trend on other campus' as well. Hell, it isn't just the athletes. I went to a pretty reputable school and there were several students there, who were only there because their parents had enough money to build a new dormitory or science building.

For the record, I'm not some pompous ass that judges people "on the way (they) speak". I come from a working class background and raised in government housing, so I knew early on that a way a person speaks, isn't reflective of how smart they are. When I suggested that Pat was dim-witted, I was pointing to his inability to connect thoughts, his inability to offer or develop insights, his poor reasoning abilities, etc. It might be a poorly formed assumption on my part but clearly the league thinks that he is damaged goods as well. We just don't know the exact reason(s) why.

BigRedDog @ 4/21/2014 7:57 PM
Dumb post. why do we need to hire a coach who played in NY? What does that have to do with anything. Much more important to have a coach here who runs Phils system. Phil has a belief on a system and therefore to get players that fit the system. Also need a coach who runs that system . Believe me, no bigger fan of Ewings than me when he played here but as a coach, here, now, NO WAY!

Wasn't referring to language. Going from Jamaica to Cambridge, Massachusetts in the 1970s is a big deal

I'm not sure what you are getting at. Why would he not be able to express himself, while speaking the same language? Tim Duncan came from St.Croix (which is basically a country onto itself) and I never doubted his intellect. Same for Raja Bell and a bunch of other players that are either foreign or not from the U.S. mainland.

Social awkwardness

Maybe, maybe not but just as preposterous as calling him an idiot

H1AND1 @ 4/21/2014 8:16 PM
Since when does a coach need to have played for the organization as a player? Isn't it more important for Phil to hire someone who he can work with? Why on earth would he limit himself to former Knicks. That makes zero sense.
Dagger @ 4/21/2014 8:39 PM
Papabear what about Ewing makes you think that he would be a good coach? Success as a Knicks player is not in any way an indication that someone has the abilities to be a savvy coach. Why tarnish his legacy for a job that does not seem optimally suited for his talents?
Nalod @ 4/21/2014 9:34 PM
Papa,

The romantic notion that a warrior of the past make for a good coach is well intended. Sometimes it works and sometimes its don't.

Don't think Phil coming back is any great "return to make good for Red" kind of a thing. Its 15mm per year running a billion dollar franchise. Knick broadcast viewership was down 29%!!!!!!!

(Nyets down 20% but it was expected after their inaugural season in brooklyn and pathetic start)

Bill Russell bombed in Seattle and they never called him back to coach in Boston. Jabbar never got a chance. Magic was intolerant when he got the Laker Gig.

Has Ewing paid his dues? Perhaps. Nobody has given him the head coach job. PHil was bought in to run a system. I doubt Ewing is his man.

dk7th @ 4/21/2014 9:45 PM
ewing is too full of himself, just as he was as a player. and he wasn't a particularly bright player. and he isn't a new yorker.
gunsnewing @ 4/21/2014 9:47 PM
Ewing is not a New Yorker? He is more New York than 95% of the New York current population

it's a little different when you are born and raised here.

knickstorrents @ 4/21/2014 10:15 PM
I think at this point we can't play favorites. I loved the heart Ewing played with but we are on the Phil Jackson or Bust plan. To me that means from top to bottom, we need people who believe in Phil's system and can execute. Coaches, Players, Scouts, Trainers, Video guys everyone has to be on the same plan. I don't believe Ewing was ever exposed to the triangle, I'm not sure what kind of system he played at Georgetown.

Agreed. Ewing had banana peels thrown on the court when he played in college. People held up signs saying he couldn't read. I think most people would have a distrust of the media and people in general after dealing with that.
That said, I wouldn't be thrilled with Ewing or Kerr as choices. I think Shaw is ideal, but he's unavailable.
