andrew-- i am not wrong when i say that having boatloads of money does not necessarily equate to winning and success... am i? doesn't the example of sterling bring this fallacy of equating money with winning and success into sharp focus? in fact i think sterling, like dolan, is a miserable person. don't you? i mean nothing inflammatory by asking these questions, but it occurs to me that when a poster asserts the opposite of what i am saying that we have a terrific teachable moment here.

Seems from a distance like you are trying to settle a personal score. Not the place or time in my opinion. If I am wrong I apologize.no this has been a meta-issue for a long while, that is, equating money with success and winning. we as knick fans have argued about dolan and his billions. i have maintained that he is a loser no matter how much money he has. the subject has also occasionally bled over to the merits of pursuing money to the exclusion of sacrificing money in order to win something valuable, ie a title, a ring-- i am referring to carmelo of course.
now here we have a despicable billionaire racist lowlife and i am wondering if this equating of money with success and winning really holds up?
i just said that this is a meta-issue. i say that money does not equate with winning. is sterling for all his money a winner? it's a philosophical issue that traces itself back to "the republic" of plato. the issue there was whether all power possessors were happy. those that were unjust, ie tyrants, no matter their power or wealth, were miserable and unhappy. those that were just, ie philosopher-kings, happy.
i see this modern issue of equating money with winning as echoing this age-old issue. it means a great deal to me, it has been a focus of mine for many years, and i ask that you respect that and not attempt to belittle me or dismiss this as a legitimate subject by trying to assert that it is either petty or personal.
Winning is a pretty broad term though. These owners set out to make money and they're achieving that goal. In that sense, they won. If you want to talk about happiness though then thats a completely different issue.the purpose of sport is to win, to be victorious-- entertaining an audience who pays money to see you compete and hopefully win... is an utterly accidental condition. if you make money in the process of owning a team that wins then you are a money making winner. if not, then you are merely making money and not a winner. if you are a miserable racist asshole who is making money you are not a winner.
Making money is the root of this whole thing. We have an owner who was never really committed to winning and did what he could to just make money and the Knicks still are up there in attendance. I'm not saying that everyone is just in it for the money but everyone wants to make the money first.
The owners locked the players out over money, and threatened to cancel the entire season over it, so of course it's primarily over the money.I do however believe that most owners know they have to put a product on the floor than can attract fans to attend, buy merchandise and such.
Yeah agreed and Dolan does do that as well.

LMFAO. I could see them flying off the wracks.
I just finished listening to the whole conversation of Donald Sterling and his ex girlfriend. I thing that all of you need to listen to that conversation and then tell me what you think. It's really a strange thing. She sure set him up quite well. What he said was offensive and bad. But listen to the conversation in its entirety. She set him up but he still is a racist.

Yes that is one evil woman. People should have freedom of speech in their own home with their own girlfriend.
We can all get in big trouble if we were recorded in private by loved ones.
Still shows that he is a racist but a despicable act by the gold digger.
Andrew wrote:tkf wrote:the dude has been a known racist... the NBA should have done something when elgin Baylor brought this issue to the forefront years ago.. Baylor a FORMER NBA great, and respected exec put this clown on blast, and the NBA did basically nothing...Didn't Baylor lose his court case though? What was the evidence that he presented that was so damning? Not that i think Sterling is innocent nice guy, but was there really enough to go on to punish him over the Baylor age discrimination situation?
Andrew I am surprised to see you here taking this tone...
But anyway I guess you felt OJ was innocent? that there was legit questioning of his character there? It was documented on how Elgin Baylor was treated by sterling, and how sterling conducted himself running that franchise.... but here is some info andrew, and this starts with his dealings outside the NBA, before I get to the nba issue.
In 2006, "The U.S. Department of Justice on Monday sued Los Angeles Clippers owner and real estate mogul Donald Sterling for housing discrimination, claiming he refused to rent apartments to blacks and families with children," according to The Associated Press (via ESPN).That was swept under the rug soon enough. Three years later, Sterling, "agreed to pay a record $2.725 million to settle [the] allegations," according to the Los Angeles Times' Scott Glover.
Per Glover, "Had the case gone to trial, an expert would have testified that an analysis of the Sterlings' rental practices in Koreatown revealed that they rented to far fewer African Americans and Hispanics than would be expected, based on demographics."
Now andrew this never went to court as sterling would have been roasted, so he settled out of court.. I guess you would say he wasn't guilty of any wrong doing there huh?
Elgin Baylor, Danny mannings agent all document racial issues and comments with sterling referring to the players as "poor black boys"...
This guy is a racist tool.. I usually refrain from the word "racist', but with sterling it is documented..
How about sterling bringing his bimbos in the locker room while guys are half naked and making inappropriate comments about the black athletes..
How can you defend this?
you ask for Damning evidence? are you kidding me?
Forget punishment in the Elgin baylor case, the league should have already taken steps with this guy since he has had a history with his racial behavior.. it is well known, well documented, and went unchecked and now it is full blown..

Donald Sterling has been known to be a racist by the LA community. I hope now Baylor can reopen his case and finally get justice. When I watched Baylor struggling on TV to explain his situation, I felt sorry for the guy but thought the jury must be right since it was a very well selected jury, but hopefully now Baylor can get some justice.
I feel like Baylor would be full of shit if he tried to get any damages. Like I said, he ran the team for 23 years and didn't have a problem with Sterling until he got fired. When you consider the shelf life of your average executive, Baylor had well exceeded his time there.
that is not true!! he was bringing these issues up way before he got fired.. are you kidding me?

Baylor was the PERFECT guy for Sterling. He is black, never complains to Sterling about discriminating his kind, never publicly denounce Sterling. When Sterling told him to do something, he does it quietly and for low wages. He was basically a slave for Sterling. Sterling used him as a shield to shun away all the minorities trying to sue him. The Justice department did couple times of suing him and they settled out of court I think. He is basically very shrewd, but now in his old age, and probably things like the death of his son last year made him less careful and arguing with his girlfriend brought the worst in him. He is the longest owner of an NBA team, but that looks to be history soon.. :)
very good points...

He lost because he just didn't have enough. He also didn't stand up to the guy when he should have (fear of losing his top-end job when back then no blacks have ever reached that high), and that contributed to his conflict. There were also other documents, memos that hindered the case for him but nothing solid to prove Sterling was discriminating on hiring, especially Baylor is black really helped Sterling look good.
Exactly why i responded to tkf's insistence that the NBA should have done something at that time...there wasn't anything concrete to punish him for.
there is no exactly Andrew.. his post is not supporting your view here... you keep saying there wasn't anything concrete.. yes there was, enough for the NBA to actually be more proactive... the NBA should have monitored that situation and put him on blast via the media, letting him know that he has to watch how he runs this franchise.. the way the NBA got involved with the knicks and dolan... the way the NBA got involved with the CP3 trade..
I find it funny how people will say about a particular player.." get your money man" and when that player takes the money and then complains about losing the fans side with the player..
Elgin the same thing.. not many black execs, he wanted to get paid.. you agree, dont you? and guess what when he saw injustice he called it out.. His salary was frozen for 22 years at 350k.... he never got a pay raise... while the NBA revenue grew and the clippers fortunes grew... if anyone had a reason to get their money, it was him..

I totally agree with you on that. The NBA did absolutely nothing to help Baylor and continued to let Sterling be an owner and even further, gave him the chance to get Chris Paul while blocking CP3 going to Lakers. I'm not saying what NBA did was wrong in terms of the blocking, but they should have tried to remove Sterling as an owner even if it's just his long time reputation as a racist (weird, considering he's a full blown Jew) is good enough reason for me if I were an NBA executive.
exactly for some reason andrew might think you are actually agree with the fact that just because he was not found guilty that the issues didn't exist as I bolded in your post and commented on prior, this was a chance for the Nba to be proactive.. they did nothing.. now you have a full blown mess.
