Find that coach...

The New York Knicks, forced to regroup after being trumped by Golden State in the race to hire Steve Kerr, relaunched their coaching search Thursday with new president Phil Jackson and several other team officials in Chicago for the start of the NBA's annual pre-draft camp.

Sources close to the process told ESPN.com that the most likely scenario, even after Jackson was snubbed by the only candidate he has considered for the position since taking the Knicks' job in March, remains hiring a younger coach Jackson has worked with previously and can mentor.

Three candidates who will thus receive consideration from Jackson, sources said, are Luke Walton and Tyronn Lue -- former players under Jackson who have already begun their coaching careers -- as well as Oklahoma City Thunder guard Derek Fisher -- if Fisher elects to stop playing after this season as he has hinted.

Sources said Jackson also intends to explore whether the Denver Nuggets are in any way amenable to releasing Brian Shaw from his contract in exchange for some form of compensation. Shaw is a longtime Jackson favorite who, after missing out on numerous head-coaching jobs, just completed his first season with the Nuggets, posting a 36-46 record despite numerous injuries to front-line players.

But Shaw told the Denver Post on Thursday: "I'm not interested in doing anything other than what I'm doing right now."

Had Shaw not taken Denver's job last summer, sources say he would have been at the top of Jackson's list with Kerr -- and conceivably above Kerr -- for the Knicks' opening.

ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard reported Thursday that the Knicks are also tracking Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg, who has considerable NBA experience as both a player and an executive. But Hoiberg recently signed an improved contract with the Cyclones and has resisted all recent feelers from the NBA, with sources saying he rebuffed a strong push from the Minnesota Timberwolves to take over from the retiring Rick Adelman within the past month.

Sources say that Jackson likewise has interest in a number of veteran coaches he has worked with previously, including Kurt Rambis, Jim Cleamons, Bill Cartwright and Frank Hamblen. Cartwright, in fact, has already interviewed with Jackson since he joined the Knicks, but it's believed only Rambis from that group would be considered for the top spot on the staff.

Since Jackson joined the Knicks for an annual salary of $12 million, his associates have maintained that the 68-year-old plans to be "heavily involved" working alongside his first coaching hire, especially in training camp. The comparison to the way Pat Riley mentored Erik Spoelstra in Miami has been made often at Madison Square Garden.

There have been no indications to this point that Jackson, after missing out on Kerr, will consider hiring an established coach, despite the loud clamor from Knicks fans to pursue Mark Jackson, whose controversial dismissal by the Warriors after 98 victories over the past two seasons opened the door for the team to swipe Kerr.

ESPN analyst and former Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy is another theoretical candidate who would excite Knicks fans, while Chicago Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau -- who sources say New York planned to pursue had Jackson rebuffed Knicks owner James Dolan -- still has admirers within the Knicks organization.

But one source close to the situation insisted that Phil Jackson is not worried about selling New Yorkers on his eventual hire.

Walton worked as a developmental coach this season with the D-League's L.A. D-Fenders while also doing Los Angeles Lakers studio work, Lue is an assistant coach to Doc Rivers with the Los Angeles Clippers and Fisher is widely regarded as a future star in either coaching or the front office when the 18-year veteran decides he's ready to start the next phase of his career.

There seems to be a theme here...Does Phil talk to people he doesn't know??..
gunsnewing @ 5/15/2014 3:28 PM
Not a surprised. If you listen to the rest of the media Mark Jackson is already Knicks head coach. I'm fine with either one of those guys. Fisher, Lue has a few years as assistant under his by and Luke Walton

These are the guys Phil is looking to mold. Not Mark Jackson, Hollins, JVG etc

Phil tweeted his support for Brad Stevens when he got hired by the Celtics- I think people are just assuming he's only focused on former players/coaches of his- there is a chance he's more knowledgeable about possible coaches outside of his circle than people think.

Than why was Kerr his first option? Sure there's always plan c-z but he wants someone accustomed to his system and principles

He was closest to him on a personal basis and had already done some ground work when they were making that Seattle bid- he knew him best, doesn't mean he's the only option

I agree Phil has his fall back guys but they are the guys he's had previous association with. Fisher, Lue Walton etc
yellowboy90 @ 5/15/2014 4:53 PM
What if the steelers never interviewed Mike Tomlin? Phil might need to look outside the box(Philmuda triangle).

Can coaches improve? Is it unreasonable to think that a first time coach who never was an assistant improve his X’s & O’s game? Could the GSW stint humble Mark Jackson enough to change his ways a become a better coach with the help of an all time great?

IDK, but I thought I should ask the question.

Vmart @ 5/15/2014 5:24 PM
Which one will the Lakers steal?
smackeddog @ 5/15/2014 5:36 PM
I read an article saying that whoever we end up as coach, they'll suffer from being known as our second choice. Hmm, wasn't Kerr the Warriors second choice...
nixluva @ 5/15/2014 5:41 PM
Phil is doing the right thing. I mean if you had a group of young men that you TRUSTED and knew very well after years of working together and going thru trials of course you'd be more comfortable with them as guys you'd bring into your team. This isn't some strange thing. He's starting this thing from the ground up in terms of building his culture here and molding a coach who will be his Mini Me. I actually like the idea. Heck, it's what I did with my sons. They are reflections of me and my philosophy on life. I'm very proud of my sons and I work with them on projects in business and have had success. They know me and what i'm about and watched me in how i've handled things. Nothing wrong with that if you do it right. IMO it's how you breed success.
CrushAlot @ 5/15/2014 5:49 PM
Have to wonder if Phil hires one of these guys as a lead assistant/associate head coach and mentors them as head coach for part or all of a season.

Eh compensation? Give me fisher or Lue

I can see him wanting shaw since he spent a lot of time on Phil's bench as his assistant

I guess if Phil is willing to give up a 2nd rd pick for him he really is confident in his ability

I want to throw my support for Walton. I think he will make a great coach and his pedigree will only help. I read that he was coaching in the Dleague so that to me is more a plus than broadcasting and being an ex GM. I like it better than a player coming straight in to coach. Walton is taking the proper channel to become a coach similar to Phil Jackson doing CBA.

Occasionally he hits the spot when he launches into a tirade about the Knicks when we are particularly sucking.

I feel old when guys like Luke Walton are proposed ! I remember when he was just a rookie on the Lakers! How is he a coach already?!

gunsnewing @ 5/16/2014 12:16 PM
Yea same here. He is 34 and Phil loves him and they share a similar outlook on and off the court. I have him behind fisher and Lue though. Lue at least has NBA experience as an assistant. Walton NBDL. For any of those guys New York as your first coaching job will be an astronomical challenge but they will have Phil's support
