I never though much of Kerr's basketball acumen as he was only a spot up shooter as a player and didn't do very good as Sun's GM.
Fisher actually directed the offense at the PG spot for a few championship teams... He has more to offer.
Fisher never directed any offense. It's what made him perfect for the triangle. As far as their basketball skills go, Kerr and Fisher are both scrubs but pretty smart. But when it comes to leading men, I agree with you, Fisher is the better bet.
The Triangle doesn't require a ball dominant PG but that doesn't mean Fisher doesn't have a great mind for the Triangle offense and BB in general. We need to finally rid ourselves of the type of BB we know and have grown accustomed to. The Triangle is completely different in it's focus. It is more like other Motion offenses in that it's not about a single guard reading a defense or breaking a defense down. Instead we will need multiple players who can pass and cut and think the game enough to understand what to do in order to counter whatever the defense does. Those moves are predetermined and that's what makes it so good for a team without a great PG.
Fisher is a leader of men and that's going to be HUGE!!! They say he gave the best speeches at halftime and was a big voice in the locker room. With him and Phil working together I feel this is the strongest leadership we've had from the top down to the court in a long time.
I don't think I ever heard any player say anything negative about Fish
When you got two of the best players in the league (kobe and KD) praising his leadership, and an 11 time championship president (of the NYK) pursuing you, your credibility is up there.
We don't really get to see fisher behind close curtains, but with the kind of people vouching for him, I would think this is a very solid move.
I feel better about him, then I do about MDA without a PG, or Woodson without kidd and Rasheed..
None of these guys were on the coaching radar before Phil got a job...In fact, Fisher wanted a front office job..But If I plan to lay on my couch next year and someone offered me 25 mil to coach, Ill take it...

I can't imagine a better fit for this team than PJax/Fish. We likely won't be able to get a CP3 type PG and so who better than Fish to direct a team as a PG that didn't have that kind of talent? This team will be taught how to play winning BB by moving and passing and keeping great spacing. We have some young guys that we don't know just how good they are yet cuz they've been so poorly coached. This is a UNIFIED leadership for the 1st time in forever. Phil is the unquestioned leader and Fish is his Padawon Learner in the Jedi, Zen Master ways
IMO this is a good thing. Does't guarantee a title, but it's lightyears better than the crap we just endured since 1999.

You my friend are LOST!!! SMDH. You can't be this out of touch with what's going on that you can't see how this is a great day for the Knicks. Doesn't matter if people thought of Fish or Kerr before Phil. The thing is that Phil has put a lot of thought into how he wanted to build this franchise and that started with a fresh mind not a retread. He wants a clean mind that is open to new things and willing to learn. Someone who knows about winning and understands Phil and his ways. That's how you build a winning culture. This is a good thing and not something to knock because your mind is locked into a standard way of thinking and the same old way coaching tree.
Certainly light years better than the crap we've endured for the past 15yrs
Pada-won 5 rings!
I'm glad I don't have to listen to smug Steve Kerr - I think Mr Fisher is the right guy for the gig- Tough, played hard, will be good w the press, smart- I like it
For me it's the first hire that felt right since van gundy and maybe Larry brown

You were excited about JVG at the time?
Were there expectations with JVG? Did the players voice their support? The media? I was following intently at the time. Wonder what the general reception was for JVG initially. I guess anything was better than what Don Nelson was trying to accomplish
Larry Brown was exciting until you realized the brown Isiah Dolan triangle was a match made in Hell

Having some continuity from the top down for once seems like a good thing to me.
Who would you have wanted?

I don't think I would have an issue if Phil spoke to a full compliment of coaches and came out with a rookie head coach..He only spoke to people he knew...No Mark Jackson??..No Hollins...No Fred Hioberg??..Shaka Smart??..John Thompson Jr??..Billy Donovan, although he won't leave...Guys who have really done it..It's not only about X's and O's...Doc Rivers was an all motivational coach in Orlando and learned the X's and O's in Boston...Mark Jax could have done the same under Phil...I think a really good coach needs to be motivational as well...None of Phil disciples panned out, anywhere...Even JVG has a coaching tree...Let's see if Kerr runs the triangle in GS...
enough of the mark jaxn love ... the guy had an amazingly talented squad in golden state. way to go. you won one playoff series ... meanwhile he pissed off everyone in the organization and if you listen to him on the broadcasts he;s not a smart person. he;s a blowhard who is prone to sweeping statements. i;ve never learned anything by listening to him.

Bout time someone said it
How smart does Bill Belichick sound??..Or Janet Yellen...
I have to agree Fisher has great presence and speeches. When I saw him at the Staple Center on the floor with the Lakers, he always seems to be the player to talk to if the team is in trouble. Can he coach? I don't know, but I'm sure Phil is more than happy to coach him periodically or even give him after school sessions..

Its like you were there for all the calls and convo's? You think you know all Phil did or did not do? Maybe Hoilberg did talk but in respect to his current job and to phil was very mum. Maybe Phil had no interest what so ever! On what planet are you so linked in?
Phil wanted who he wanted, not who Holfresh wanted!
I have no idea how it all translates but he has a 5 year contract as were Kerr to have. THis is not about next year, its about progress. Mistakes will be made, bad adjustments will happen. Its NY, y'all be cool!
Holfresh, I think you're greatly underestimating Phil's thinking on this. He already knows none of those coaches are that great. He wants to take a guy who has a certain mentality already and give him all of his wisdom over the course of the next few years. It's the same thing Riley did. You get a guy who has the right qualities as a man and a leader and you develop him from there. Fish played under Phil for NINE YEARS and 5 titles!!!
PJax:
“I’d like to have a prior relationship with a coach so that we know that we’ve gone through some kind of issues together,” Jackson said last month. “We’ve dealt with some kind of battle situations. We’ve had conflicts, we’ve had disagreements and we know how to work things out. Those, I think, are part and parcel I think to having a relationship with people that can work together that can still disagree and come to terms.”“But Derek is one of those lead guards that had a real good concept of the game and liked doing the skill work and the drill work that’s necessary to hold guys to the premises of how to execute. Watching these playoffs and seeing teams execute against pressure defense brings me right back to what basketball is all about. It’s about being prepared to do these types of things that break down defenses that have pressure in situations in playoff games like this. That’s the way I was schooled in coaching and that’s the way I intend to school a coach that comes to work for us.”

Fish:
“I think I’ve always — for the last decade — really felt my purpose in life and calling was to be in a leadership position or some position of impact on other people,” he said earlier this month. “Somehow I’ve been blessed to positively impact other people.
“Coaching allows me to positively impact other people’s lives, to help people find success when they haven’t or have — working together for a common goal. There’s a love for helping other people. Not playing anymore — if that’s what it’s to be — coaching or being in the front office or being in a role where I can positively impact others and work together for a common goal is exciting to me.”
