Hmmmmm...great point. Didn't even think about that one....all we think about is sign him or bust.

martin - we both know that the NY media machine has to maintain interest in its product, not the Knicks, and manufacture rumors (Kevin Love was seen at Sbarro's), reports from un-named sources (Steve Kerr is certain to take the Knicks job) and juicy gossip (big four my butt) just to sell papers.

If one sorts through the trash, sifts bullsh*t from fact, and simply does some independent thinking - a true hoops kung-fu master might surmise that Uncle Phil will shape the Knicks in the image of 1970-73, just for the good times.

That does not imply "stars" or free agent-freak-of-the-week... it translates into basketball players with miniature egos, who play defense and share the rock.

Think about it. Ignore the hype.

I can't tell if you are agreeing with me or not

Me either, but the hype media is making knick fans into little emotional divas!

Fact is Melo walks we got cap space? We can take Bosh and not build around him, but just "Build".

Just an example, not a wish or predication. Spurs and Pistons showed us you can win without a "Star" but you need to develop good players, get the right guys off waivers (Like Danny Green, Diaw,)and sometimes get lucky. Duncan is no longer the "MAN" but a good productive player. Rox can go big three but the bench is gonna be thin.

At this pace, I'd like for Lebron to go to Cleveland

you gotta purge it all man

Anthony met with Knicks officials in Los Angeles on Friday night. The New York Daily News reported Saturday that Anthony's camp is upset with Knicks President Phil Jackson publicly revealing he would like Anthony not to opt out of his contract by June 23 or, if he does, sign a new deal for less money.

Nothing Zen about Phil using the press to pressure Melo. Is there any chance with this purge that he brings in a better player than Melo? What if Melo reacts to this by signing for less in Miami without even a sign and trade? Without nyc and nys income tax he can match the salary he would net at a much lower gross. After this past season and based on what the knick organization has done why should Melo stay? The move to complete the championship contender was getting Tyson to team up with Amare and Melo. How has that worked out? Three gms, and three coaches later and Melo is asked through the press to take less or opt in? Why? Because the future is so bright when he turns thirty one everything is going to be better? Knicks should either kiss his butt or move him. PJax misplayed this one and it could kill his five years in nyc. Talents like Melo are extremely hard to acquire. I could be wrong but I don't expect 74 year old phil looking back and saying that the day he went to the press and said Melo should take less was the moment things changed for the best for the knicks during his tenure.

Is he trying to pressure Melo or is he just trying his best to make the public think he wants to keep Melo?

If he is not trying to keep Melo what is his plan? No draft picks and no talent on the roster other than Melo. Not sure what his endgame is.

So he is a liar who is not straight up? When has Phil cared enough about public opinion to lie to th public?

the end is in the beginning. jackson's seemingly cavalier easy come easy go attitude is directly linked to his prime directive: culture change. so many melo fans believe to their core that coddling and pampering are necessary in order to appease this overpaid person. they are wrong. jackson believes that culture change means purging the organization of certain attitudes and those players who personify those attitudes.

at the end of the day no player is worth keeping if he has historically put money above winning. that's not merely n attitude that is a value system revolving around an ego. frankly i believe that jackson is channeling a bit of john wooden:

"Like the story about Bill Walton’s haircut. One time, the story goes, Walton challenged Wooden’s rule about shaggy hair and insisted, “It’s my right.”

“That’s good, Bill,” Wooden replied. “I admire people who have strong beliefs and stick by them. We’re going to miss you.” Walton got on his bike, raced to the barber, and made it back in time for practice."

How has he misplayed this? They can still trade him in a "sign and trade" if they feel he is definitely leaving. You you can't trade players with outstanding player options so they can't trade him now unless Melo opts in.

I don't think the Wooden story applies here but I get the sentiment. Not sure what kind of beginning the Knicks will have. If Melo leaves hopefully it is in a sign and trade. If he leaves for less to win will that silence the Melo is all about money contingent?

Even if Melo walks, well bottom out next year and get a high lotto pick in 2015 ON TOP OF having 2 max spots open to sign free agents. Phil is smart not trying to make over the roster as fast as possible but instead the smart way. And actually, it won't even take that long. Were talking one lost season. The situation without Melo is not that bad at all. It's certainly not the end of the world.

This roster that is locked in next season even with Melo and some peripheral moves is NOT a contender. Were talking 2 seasons minimum for a decent team to be built around Melo at which point he'll be 32-33 years old. Do we really want an aging Carmelo making $20+ mil? I'd much rather we get a high pick and a chance at a young star plus the 2 max slots to go after some younger free agents in 2015 who aren't approaching their mid 30's. I want the Knicks to be set up to contend into the future, not just the next couple years riding an aging scorer who needs lots of help.

I don't fault the Knicks for going for their own Amare/Melo/Chandler "big 3" but it clearly failed. Time to wipe the slate clean and move on.

it won't silence the knicks fans because he could have used that approach coming to the knicks in the first place. now if he leaves it will basically reinforce what a bad trade it was for the knicks all along since the knicks will be back where they started in 2008-- a bloated roster not compatible with the gm's overarching plan, with expiring contracts and at least one season of "competitive" basketball, "competitive" being the code word for "bad and in the process of purging and rebuilding."

Phil is making it seem to other teams that he is still interested in keeping Melo. Driving up the bargaining price for multiple teams

My biggest fear is that we lose Melo for nothing. What if he leaves without giving us the chance to do a sign and trade or if he doesn't give us more than one team he'll go to?? Why would a team give us a good return if they know that they're the only team he'll sign with??

At least we would have all that cap room in 2015. I don't expect next season to be a great one. One outcome that would greatly help the Knicks would be if Fisher got the team to overachieve, do better than expected. Let some of the better players in the league know that there is a coaching staff in place that knows what they're doing.

How has Phil misplayed this??...He tried to pressure Melo in the press to sign for less or not opt out all together...He misread Melo...Melo isn't that kind of guy, like him or not..He holds grudges if you are not honest and upfront with him..On top of that, you hire a rookie coach to pursue your own agenda...Phil wants his own coaching tree and he wants to prove that he and the triangle was much about winning as much as MJ, Pippen, Kobe and Shaq was...Melo is in his prime and don't want to be here to help Phil's in his pursuit to exonerate the knocks against his legacy...Melo wants to win and win now...Phil didn't hire the best candidate, he hired a coach he can control...
