Fact is Melo walks we got cap space? We can take Bosh and not build around him, but just "Build".
Just an example, not a wish or predication. Spurs and Pistons showed us you can win without a "Star" but you need to develop good players, get the right guys off waivers (Like Danny Green, Diaw,)and sometimes get lucky. Duncan is no longer the "MAN" but a good productive player. Rox can go big three but the bench is gonna be thin.

the root of the disaster here is that melo forced his way here and cost us 14 starters, 1.6 billion dollars and our sanity.

I don't think the Wooden story applies here but I get the sentiment. Not sure what kind of beginning the Knicks will have. If Melo leaves hopefully it is in a sign and trade. If he leaves for less to win will that silence the Melo is all about money contingent?

Even if Melo walks, well bottom out next year and get a high lotto pick in 2015 ON TOP OF having 2 max spots open to sign free agents. Phil is smart not trying to make over the roster as fast as possible but instead the smart way. And actually, it won't even take that long. Were talking one lost season. The situation without Melo is not that bad at all. It's certainly not the end of the world.
This roster that is locked in next season even with Melo and some peripheral moves is NOT a contender. Were talking 2 seasons minimum for a decent team to be built around Melo at which point he'll be 32-33 years old. Do we really want an aging Carmelo making $20+ mil? I'd much rather we get a high pick and a chance at a young star plus the 2 max slots to go after some younger free agents in 2015 who aren't approaching their mid 30's. I want the Knicks to be set up to contend into the future, not just the next couple years riding an aging scorer who needs lots of help.
I don't fault the Knicks for going for their own Amare/Melo/Chandler "big 3" but it clearly failed. Time to wipe the slate clean and move on.

it won't silence the knicks fans because he could have used that approach coming to the knicks in the first place. now if he leaves it will basically reinforce what a bad trade it was for the knicks all along since the knicks will be back where they started in 2008-- a bloated roster not compatible with the gm's overarching plan, with expiring contracts and at least one season of "competitive" basketball, "competitive" being the code word for "bad and in the process of purging and rebuilding."
Phil is making it seem to other teams that he is still interested in keeping Melo. Driving up the bargaining price for multiple teams

My biggest fear is that we lose Melo for nothing. What if he leaves without giving us the chance to do a sign and trade or if he doesn't give us more than one team he'll go to?? Why would a team give us a good return if they know that they're the only team he'll sign with??

At least we would have all that cap room in 2015. I don't expect next season to be a great one. One outcome that would greatly help the Knicks would be if Fisher got the team to overachieve, do better than expected. Let some of the better players in the league know that there is a coaching staff in place that knows what they're doing.

How has Phil misplayed this??...He tried to pressure Melo in the press to sign for less or not opt out all together...He misread Melo...Melo isn't that kind of guy, like him or not..He holds grudges if you are not honest and upfront with him..On top of that, you hire a rookie coach to pursue your own agenda...Phil wants his own coaching tree and he wants to prove that he and the triangle was much about winning as much as MJ, Pippen, Kobe and Shaq was...Melo is in his prime and don't want to be here to help Phil's in his pursuit to exonerate the knocks against his legacy...Melo wants to win and win now...Phil didn't hire the best candidate, he hired a coach he can control...
