Knicks · expectations of Larkin (page 1)

callmened @ 6/30/2014 12:26 AM
to our in-house scouting crew (BRIGGS, RonRon and others), what do you think of Shane Larkin. For some reason Im very excited about him. I know he lacks size and he was inconsistent last yr. But he showed flashes of excitement last yr. I think his ceiling is as a backup point guard but who knows
yellowboy90 @ 6/30/2014 12:41 AM
I just hope he can be on the level of isaiah Thomas who is a pretty good shooter and scorer from the pg position. Thomas is slightly shorter but has a longer reach and wingspan. I just wonder where he fits in as a triangle guard and will he be able to finish in the lane. He will need to be able to shoot it at a high level from 3 to stay on the floor probably
Nalod @ 6/30/2014 12:51 AM
I expect him to be traded.

That's aiming really high. I think Isaiah is a significantly better passer than Larkin. I'm expecting similar play to what we got out of Nate Robinson. Hopefully a bit more consistent.

Im assuming you mean the kid on Sacramento.

Someone mentioned Dana Barros. Another said dj augustine. I mentioned jj barea.

All good comparisons.

I was high on him coming out of college and was hoping we could have drafted him until Dallas took him for no reason just ahead of us. That ankle injury took something out of him. I felt like he was heavier and hesitant in Dallas. I'm looking forward to seeing him this year

I think this guy is gonna be an exciting player. We'll have to see how much he can grow. I think he's more explosive than Augustine but not quite as good as Isaiah. You never know though. Isaiah is already a really good player in this league and I think he was taken the last pick of the draft. I think the Barea comparison is good but like I've said before I see a lot of Nate Robinson in this kid. He's got a lot of experience in the pick and roll which is so heavily used today. He doesn't seem to make the thread the needle passes but he can really handle the ball(kind of reminds me of Steph Curry a bit) and is very unselfish. He drives and kicks very well and can shoot from anywhere. Spot up. pull up off the dribble, floater in the lane. At the very least he looks like a good sparkplug to back up Jose.
yellowboy90 @ 6/30/2014 7:27 AM
if he is d.j. Augustine they need to trade him now.
StarksEwing1 @ 6/30/2014 8:13 AM
I was a big fan of Larkin last year but i knew he probably woulndt be on the board for the Knicks. I understand the 2013 draft class was weak BUT Hardaway Jr was picked 24 and he looks like a steal. Larkin had a bad injury and the Mavs dont like to play younger guys a lot so he ever got the opurtuntity to show is skills

He's a much better athlete than Augustine. He was one of the best athletes in last years draft class.

SupremeCommander @ 6/30/2014 8:50 AM
I have no idea. I know he jumped high but the biggest risk of drafting him (according to scouting reports) was his *lack* of athleticism. I think he's plenty athletic but his size negates that. I'm hoping for Damon Stoudemire but would settle for BJ Armstrong!
Vmart @ 6/30/2014 9:24 AM
I expect him to facilitate the triangle and hit the open shots. Similar to Fisher.

That is the inevitable for all the Knicks.

BRIGGS @ 6/30/2014 9:39 AM
I think he needs a blank slate and see from stage 1 what he can do. I dont necessarily think he wouldve been a 1st round pick in this last draft but its possible. He has pedigree skills and elite type athletic ability. But that is offset by lack of size and maybe worse he has very short arms. I wouldve liked to see us draft Burton at 57 and let Larkin and Burton battle it out. Larkin is more of a pure PG so we'll see----hope for the best. Its a lot better than having a Felton there.
GustavBahler @ 6/30/2014 10:02 AM
Not sure what to expect. Would like Larkin to become a reliable backup PG for us so we don't have to keep finding new ones, and can focus on other areas like the front court.
CrushAlot @ 6/30/2014 10:44 AM
I wonder if the Knicks don't give a qualifying offer to Murry if that is a commitment to Larkin.
fishmike @ 6/30/2014 10:49 AM
Murry gets signed and traded somewhere for a 2nd rounder. Larkin is the backup next year. He's a great P&R guy to bring off the bench and get Amare easy touches. He can get into the paint and make plays. I expect him to make the rotation unless he gets hurt. He will have to compete with Prigs for playing time and thats a positive. I like our PG rotation so much more with Calderon/Prigs/Larkin. Each has a nice skill set that fits with what we are trying to do. I like how Phil added a defensive guy out there as well.. will see.
yellowboy90 @ 6/30/2014 11:16 AM
Larkin will need to study Bogues and other shorter guards and learn how they became a pest on D. His lack of length compared to his size may become a serious problem. He has very short arms and his size and length is very Jose Barea like. If he stays he has to become that change of pace guy like Ty Lawson was/is when he started out.

I really do not like that defensively the guards are not an upgrade over Felton. The knicks would go along way if their Defense was average or slightly above average next year.

yea but as bad as Felton was on D his offense was worse. The only thing you could count on Felton to do was take care of the ball. In the 34 losses Felton played in last year he average 35% shotting (vs. 45% in wins). That he was a poor PG. Doesnt break down the D, doesnt push the ball (anymore), doesnt space the floor with the threat of knocking down shots... These are the areas we will be greatly improved in. The overall defense will improve.
