Granted, there are players who will step up and earn respect and higher salaries so keeping flexibility is paramount, but I assume Love is not walking without a trade and Durant still is two seasons away from being free!

Lakers future is not so bleak as it is unclear! The notion teams are "screwed" is not so apparent because the new CBA makes it easy to level the playing field but a killer contract can set you back.
We'll worry about melo's deal in a few years. Slowly Phil will have a balanced roster this upcoming season but its a future uncertain and unclear. Isn't that true about everything?

The age of the starphuch is ending. Cleveland might be onto something big. They kept space open but if Lebron did nto go back home they still were setting them selves nice for a trade.
Knicks did not do anything stupid in panic either by pawning off Shump or dumping contracts. The Trade with Mavs was friendly.

Basketball as we have seen by SAS can be played with a beauty and can crush indvidual talent. Scary to think if Blatt can pull that off in Cleveland, and hopeful Phish can do this in NY.
Maybe we don't sniff a championship but there is a trend that might be starting. A throw back if you will when ball movement and teams blended together. Phil metions the core of 70's knicks cannot replicate in teh current era where the CBA promotes player movement but when things become equal a team that wins and pays it players might be a better destination that one that starphuchs and does not win as frequently.
I hope that every decision points in a direction that promotes a higher level of play. It does not have to be "This player or that player", but can be a culture that promotes and demands a high level of play.
