Rays will probably move Price because they cant afford to pay him his next big deal. It would help if they played in a real ball park. As a Yankee fan who has watched the Rays a lot down here since Madden took the job, If there was anyone to break the bank on, its him. I like Girardi, but imagine what Madden could do with our payroll.
He's thrown a lot of innings but he's only 33 (and actually only 166th all time in innings pitched). All the weight he was putting on his knees for years was probably a big factor.
According to the article, his knee wasn't bothering him until his last 2 starts. So his knee probably wasn't the reason his fastball was hitting only 88. That means, it looks like best case scenario, his knee does recover and we have the 88 mph-throwing, 5.00 ERA pitcher he's been the last 2 years.

Yeah, he probably has a slow metabolism and has to work extremely hard to lose weight, and he was pitching great. Vague warnings like "Your weight could be a problem in 5 to 10 years" probably weren't enough.

My question is this: What's the deal with the remaining money on his contract? If he retires by choice, does he get all his money? Would insurance ever get involved and pick up the remaining tab if the cause for retirement is a medical issue? What was the deal with Allan Houston when he retired again? Money didn't come off the Knicks' cap right away from what I remember but insurance kicked in at some point and saved ownership the money though, right? Don't remember now, maybe I have that wrong...Well, there's no salary cap in baseball. Whatever insurance relief we get could get pumped right back into the team. There's a lot they could do with that money, boy... What's the Yanks way outta this? Is there one? And how severe is CC's condition -- above article was a little vague, no? Admittedly, I just skimmed it. Not up to speed on what's going on with him now -- what exactly is career-threatening about his situation all of a sudden?

There wasn't a lot of info. but the article said he might need microfracture surgery. So I guess his knee has very little cartilage.
stupid signing and very overrated pitcher. Also did not think that he came through enough in the clutch. I still won't forgive him for the cleveland playoffs.
Long-term max contracts for veterans are just a bad idea. We've seen this so many times in baseball now.
Thats an understatement! We spent $500,000,000 FIVE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS, on 40 yr olds like Beltran, Soriano, McCann, Jeter, Ichiro for the next 4yrs nut we couldn't just bring Robbie Cano back.

Well I think Cano's contract is a disaster too. I'm beginning to think pitchers in their 20s are the only ones even potentially worth giving big contracts to. It's just my observation. I don't know if it's been researched. (And not CC since he was out of shape and had the pitching mileage of a guy in his 30s.)

Agreed. Cano's contract is ridiculous and will become an albatross sooner rather than later IMO.
I just can never get myself worked up over how much the Yankees are wasting on guys like Arod and Sabathia becauase MLB has no hard cap and I could care less how much money they waste. I just wish they'd spend smarter in general like investing in the farm system and getting younger players instead of constantly going for old vets.
But paying Arod and Sabathia to sit around jerking their gherkins? I could care less, really. It's not like it will stop the Yankees from throwing money around.

Rays have already said they won't let Price go to the Yankees. They'd be idiots to do it.
