Was able to see the end of the first half and most of the second half.

He looked very comfortable in the offense, more so than many of his teammates. Showed some midrange touch... even made a short jumper after he travelled and continued with his move.

Got pushed around down low at times, but he seems to stay in position on D.

He is not a "child"- just turned 24, but I think Jackson sees something in him, and if he shows the kind of confidence he exhibited yesterday, they might find a way to keep him.

A short clip from a DraftExpress scouting report in 2012 seems to be dead on, IMO. :

Wear gets most of his points within the flow of the offense, not possessing any one consistent means of scoring that his team can count on. He shoots a high percentage from the floor, makes the extra pass, and doesn't turn the ball over very often, clearly understanding the role he plays and his limitations.

Wear is a fundamentally sound player who moves off ball effectively in UCLA's slow-paced motion offense, allowing him to find seams in which he can get his shot off. He has a bit of a post game he can utilize against similarly sized players, is a very good offensive rebounder, and can create a little offense in a straight line taking his man off the dribble from the perimeter. Considering his athletic limitations, it's unlikely that these parts of his game will be as effective against higher level competition, making it imperative that he improves his jump-shot as his career moves on.

Wear only attempted a handful of 3-pointers last season, even if his mechanics and touch indicate that this could very well become a more dangerous part of his arsenal as his career progresses. Considering the role he'll be asked to play in the NBA, this will be an important part of his evaluation, as he would surely be asked to be a reliable set-shooter and floor spacer to not be an offensive liability.

Defensively, Wear shows good fundamentals and timing and a very high activity level, giving an excellent effort on pretty much every possession he plays. Where he runs into trouble at times is matching up with quicker big men who are capable of beating him off the dribble, or very strong and physical opponents who can back him down inside the post. His lateral quickness is just average, and he doesn't compensate for that with great size, length or strength. Scouts will want to see how he fares going up against the more highly touted power forwards on UCLA's schedule, as there are some question marks about how this part of his game might translate to the NBA.

I know I sound like a broken record but I see no value in keeping Outlaw over this kid. We know what Outlaw is about. Wear just looks more suited to this style and just gives us more in general. I have to imagine Phil and Fish will see this too.

Yep, as expected Outlaw looked like a broken man- zero confidence, zero game.

I like wear's play, he played with hunger...but it's one preseason game, just one. Wear isnt taking a spot on the team based on one game.
fitzfarm @ 10/9/2014 9:13 AM
Yes wear over outlaw... Wears upside is exciting ... I think he makes the team and outlaw is out

You're right but I'd waive whoever

To make sure he's on the team for 2014-2015

damn, he played for UNC and UCLA ... how did that happen?

I'd rejoice if they bought out Bargs and replaced him with a bag of potatoes. Can't stand the guy and he isn't even good at what he is purported to be good at. He obviously has lost all passion for the game.

Ummmmm Bargs hits the 15-18 footer consistently and that is what he is known for.

He hasn't earned the spot yet. Its been like 2 summer league games and 1 preseason game. He has to keep flashing and earn the spot. He was a role player and not a star at UCLA/UNC for a reason. He has some talent but he's gotta keep establishing himself consistently. That was a pretty good game from him though.

IMO it's not so much about making the move right this second. We know it's early but IMO we pretty much know what Outlaw is and he's not gonna suddenly get more agile and more impactful for this team. He's stiff legged and just not a very versatile player. I think Wear Offers much more already and has more upside. Wear has the game that fits what we're doing now. It's clear to see even this early.

I agree but he is the only guy of the non guaranteed guys that got any run and he looked good. I wonder if Phil makes a small move to open up a roster spot.

When you are 6-10 and can shoot play hard and smart--have diversity and high IQ--you should/will have a spot on an NBA team roster. Is he going to magically become unable to hit the 14 footer--I doubt it. If you look at his usage number with extended minutes--they are pretty impressive over his career in college.

50 1300 6.1 11.0 .552 5.8 10.4 .553 0.3 0.6 .524 2.7 3.3 .815 6.9 1.2 1.1 1.2 1.4 4.3 15.2

So during 50 games in school his 40 min per was 15+ points shooting 55% and 82% from the line and 7 rebounds. This guy has a very fundamentally sound game he can hit the mid range he can pass he can shoot and will try to defend. If you can hit that mid range in this system at 6-10 you should have a roster spot.

Do you think he gets a roster spot? If so does someone get waived or is a trade made?

Im sure they have seen him play in practice. When I saw him in the videos he looked impressive thats why I made the thread--also I know his particular skill sets from college. He makes sense for this team. Im sure as a non roster player hes going to have to show it a few times like Chris Copeland did but I think he stands a good chance to make the roster if he can just play like he has for the last few years. The guy can play basketball.

The entire focus of Phil's prospects is to find kids that he thinks have the overall game to fit in this system going forward. Wear fits that mold. Phil wants to fill the roster with role players that can be able to do multiple things on the court. He's always liked guys with skills, hustle and BB IQ. The simple move is to give him Outlaw's spot.
callmened @ 10/10/2014 5:47 AM
one could argue that wear should get a spot over outlaw. However, this team alreadyhas depth at PF...they have a million PFs. meanwhile, early is the only back up for melo at the 3. it makes sense to keep the vet outlaw at 3 until early gets comfy. DLeague for wear until amare or bargs gets hurt (which will most likely happen)

I think the team has to weigh the value of a 3mm$ ending contract with Outlaw versus what Wear may bring to the team. Wear is more of a 3-4 so his principle competition comes from Avy Outlaw and Early in his price range(obviously Outlaw's contract is a bit higher than the latter)

If you send Wear to the d-league, then anyone can scoup him up as he wont have a contract unless he has a roster spot.

its not that deep of a loss. not like losing karl malone or something. nice player, im rooting for him but hes not a big deal to me

I thought that initially, but then I read that at this stage of his storied career, Outlaw is considered and has been playing as a stretch PF (Kind of worrying for a player who can't shoot and is lanky and undersized!). We can play Shump, JR and Tim Jr at SF (will help ease the number crunch for those guys too), and we have Early too. SO I'd go with keeping Wear.

How come I read some pieces saying Wear was too lanky or needed to bulk up? He looked okay, I thought
