“As a second-year guy coming off an up-and-down rookie season with an injury being able to be thrown into that type of fire and just go out there and play, it’s a great experience for me,” Larkin said. “It’s just going to make me better.”

As for his contract situation, Larkin says the Knicks’ decision not to pick up his third-year option doesn’t mean he’s not wanted.

“It’s not like they told me like, ‘We don’t see you as part of our future, we don’t want you, da-da-da-da,’” Larkin said. “If that was the case, I’d be sitting on the bench.

“So obviously, they want to see what I have,” he added. “That’s what I’m doing. Going out there playing

Philly can offer him $3.2mm next year to run their team and that's double what the Knicks can give him. Let me just get this out of my system now, if we are giving up on guys like Larkin to max out Gasol I will throw up

That's not true. the knicks can offer that and more.

No...the knicks can only offer what they declined....1.7 mil. it's a CBA loophole closure to prevent teams from doing exactly what you wish they could.

really, so EB rights do not apply?

Go back and read the thread

Knickscity dropped a link difference between

How 1st rd picks and 2nd rd picks are handled in this situation

did not see the link but I just looked it up. Thanks KCity and F5 for the info.

Here is what Knickcity said:

http://midlevelexceptional.com/2014/10/3...

The other factor that differentiates team options on rookie scale contracts from other team options is what happens when a team declines one.

When a team declines an option on a rookie scale contract, two important things happen:

The player in question will be an Unrestricted Free Agent after that season.
The amount of the option that the team declined is the most the team that has the player when that contract ends can pay him the following summer.

This has got to be ONE OF THE WORST MOVES IN RECENT MEMORY. Absolutely terrible. We could EASILY have gotten a pick for the kid. And if he played well it
could have been a nice pick. Man, once again, being a Knicks fan (fill in)...
I imagine that Larkins trade value is also now limited. Man Phil, explain this one.

gunsnewing @ 11/2/2014 2:36 PM
Kind of a bummer huh?

Coming off a great win over the Cavs where Larkin was a key contributor

Balloon out of sail move so early in the season

knickscity @ 11/2/2014 2:42 PM
Yes, his value is limited now, but it matter none whether he plays well or not....he wont be here. I'm not even sure if he was traded if the team that trades for him can sign him either.

I'm sorry, but you can't tell me on draft night the Knicks couldnt trade Larkin for a 2nd rounder at worst, then draft and stash a player to avoid the salary being on the books....the same thing they are doing with Thanasis.

newyorknewyork @ 11/2/2014 3:59 PM
Well in you guys opinion y do u think Phil decided to go this route?

I really dont know, unless Phil has a deal in place, no other reasoning makes sense. Nobody can be this sure about an upcoming free agency....it really cant be based on that. The 1.7 is not a factor in that.
MS @ 11/2/2014 4:13 PM
Very short sighted move by the Knicks. At 1.7MM that's essentially a minimum player to fill out a roster. The kid has potential and if he plays well he gets 3MM+ easily.

Judging by what guys like Alec Burke are getting and marginally talented guys pulling in 8-13MM a year I just don't see why you wouldn't pick up the option.

OT but . . . is it just me or is Larkin the reincarnation of Rick Brunson?

Just you.

Emotionally for the fans, this is like letting Lin walk all over again.
We get to watch him play and improve with next to ZERO chance of being able to resign him.

A few small points of comparison:
Lowry
Isaiah Thomas
Mike Conley
Darren Collison

a few more:
Kemba Walker
DJ Augustin
Brandon Jennings
Barea
Ridnour

You can say Larkin is a good value at his current price tag, but unremarkable vs this bunch. Most of these guys have had strong stretches of brilliance.

Larkin was injured and has around a year of playing time under his belt. He was selected 18th in the 1st round.
How much experience do those guys have that you mentioned? pretty clear they have lots of experience overall.

Larkin is like a 2nd year player all things considered, on a CHEAP contract that we essentially just lost for nothing.
Give him a chance at 1.7 million to be unremarkable. He is the starting PG on this team and does not look bad. Couple that with all the playing time he missed and his
age and it once again looks like management made a blunder. Again, we are losing him for nothing. We could have traded him much easier picking up that option.
Now if a team trades for him they want commitment to resign and they better have some cap space. And if he is playing well do we see how far we go into the playoffs with him, KNOWING he is gone, or do we try to get something first. We are between a rock and a hard place now.

edit - and his speed is insane. Think that change of pace he brings will be sorely missed, not to mention his defense for such a young and small guy.

Im a fan of larkin so i want him to develop here and so fa he has been good. Sure sometimes he is out of control but his defense is good and he hasshown a nice outside jumpshot. Im not a big fan of Calderon even though he can shoot. 1.7 million is not gonna hinder the salary cap especially with his potential

That's kind of the point of this thread. Don't get attached. He gone.

"He's gone" is the correct way to put it

There's a special place for folks who correct grammar on sports message forums.

Also... Larkin is toast.

Nalod @ 11/3/2014 10:29 AM
We can resign him up to the 1.6mil. If he can get more he can leave. If we don't want him he can leave. Keeping the options open is Phil.

Phuching triangles seems to be a theme around here

So is Larkin gone in the Hall & Oates sense?
