Uhhh it didn't take Berman for us

All to come to this realization

Memphis success is only saving us from ourselves

Maxed out Gasol and Melo get you nowhere

I'm sure people will be lining up to join our .190 team!

I think Phil is looking for a Houston, Childs, LJ makeover. Not sure if that is possible and it wouldn't be the first time players have used tge Knicks as a tool to get more money if you think NYC is going to be seen as an undesireable place. Hopefully Phil can make it work.

Oh I'm sure we could badly overpay for guys but that's never a good idea.

Looking over the 2015 free agents I think a best case, realistic scenario is maxing out either Jimmy Butler Reggie Jackson and andsing the rest of our space on maybe Tobias Harris. Our starting lineup for the next season would be Calderon-Butler-Harris-Melo-lottery big man X.

I doubt Jackson gets the max but Butler will. Chicago won't let Butler go they will play him like they did Deng because they know that his is a trade asset because of his defense regardless if his offense goes into the tank.

I would love that line up though. 4 players on the floor that can shoot, score, and dribble. $ players that can run the weak side PnR.

I have no interest in Jackson at the price he'd command. Butler is a really tough call. He's always been good but he raised his game so much in a contract year. If he keeps this up all season, I'd take the max contract gamble on him.

You think Jackson will command that much? I see him in the Lance Stephenson range because he was not able to shoot that well as a starter. Everything else was great though.

Me neither but who else are we going to be able to give our cap space to?

By the way, I just read the full Berman article and saw this:

It’s why Knicks management believes tanking is not an option and having a good record, a playoff team and Carmelo Anthony are keys to convincing 2015 free agents — such as LaMarcus Aldridge or Kevin Love — to sign with the team.

I'm now terrified.

I would be damn surprised if Berman has any clue about their present thinking. At 4-17, Phil would have to be a total numbskull not to go for a top pick. But then again, maybe Berman is right. After all, what can explain rushing back Melo after he looked temporarily crippled? And playing him big minutes immediately? It's all stupidity personified.

I guess I just validated Berman's thesis, lol.

Sad.

If that was their thinking looking at this squad

And not paying attention to what both free agents

Have gone on record saying in the press the past year

Then most certainly we should all be more terrified

We never had a shot at Gasol-Love-Aldridge period

No matter if we squeaked into the playoffs

I think the reasonable man on the inside of the fan

Knows our plan is pretty flawed as currently constructed

And it started with the re-inking of Carmelo

When the Knicks were once freed from his bondage of contract

Phil is like a Modern Day Moses leading the Isrealites

Not to the Promise Land but instead back to Egypt

Good question. I doubt 2015 is going to be a big splash, which may actually be beneficial for us in the long run. It could give us the opportunity to frontload the contracts of new signees, while maximizing cap space for the future. That could allow us to get our ducks in a row and quickly stack the team with talent. Personally, I'd start Reggie Jackson off at $14 million if I could but would only pay him $6-$7 million per for the remaining 2 seasons.

But I am chilled to hear that we are trying to win this season. Maybe it's nothing more than a ploy to keep Dolan away and Knick fans off management's back but that would be monumentally stupid if it wasn't the case. I'm worried that they might trade the pick on draft night if they are truly that short-sighted.

Can't do that except in certain particular circumstances. When a free agent changes teams they're only allowed to increase or decrease each year's salary by 4.5% of the first year salary. So, if we signed Jackson to a contract starting at $14M we could only decrease his contract by $630k each season.

Teams that win usually don't draft high or have big cap space. Most winning teams can orchestrate sign and trade but its a trade.
A free agent can have a big impact.

Franchise players usually resign. New GM, New coach, Cap space, Draft a stud.........and a prolific scorer already in place can be attractive.

What was miami's record the year before Bosh and Lebron joined? We very bad. they were tanking and letting expirings expire.

Their teams are better, they get paid more if they stay, and they can get a 5th year if they stay. I think Phil is looking to sign a couple of good players with the cap space. That is what he has been saying. Aldridge has said he is staying in Portland. My guess is Gasol really won't be on the market if Memphis is willing to pay him and give him the fifth year.

Dude.....the Utah comparison is because FAs just refuse to go there. Not because Utah is a bad organization. As for star power, as long as that star is a two way player like Gasol, I am fine

knicks1248 @ 12/7/2014 1:08 PM
The knicks thinking has never been about tanking, the talent on this team is average. But the record indicates we couldn't beat a good college team. The future of this team is being run by a coach who has no clue, so it doesn't matter what kind of talent you have, they have no direction.

You can get a top 5 draft pick like Drummond and look how well he has detroit. Some of you guys live in fantasy land. When that draft comes and we miss out, your going to be shaking your head just like you were when kemba walker strolled from the top of the key all the way to the basket in 4 seconds. All so close but yet so far.
