Knicks · The Reason We Need Aaron Afflalo Next Year (and DEN's bigs)... (page 1)
Arron Afflalo has a very underrated post game. I’m sure I’m not the first person to throw out that thought on the internet either. But for the past few seasons, Afflalo has ranked near the top of the league in terms of post up efficiency, according to Synergy Sports data. His post ups this year for the Nuggets have generated 1.05 points per possession, far better than the team’s overall mark of .928. Despite teammate Kenneth Faried’s improvement on the block over the second half of last season (though he’s regressed this year), the argument can certainly be made that Afflalo is the best post player on a Nuggets roster oversaturated with big men. The problem is, Denver doesn’t seem to deploy him on the block nearly enough.Part of this is because head coach Brian Shaw’s decision to move away from post ups in general -- a trend that has helped Denver recover from their horrific 1-5 start. But the post ups that should be eliminated are the ones that include Faried, Javale McGee and any of the Nuggets other traditional big men. With Danilo Gallinari back and Shaw employing more lineups where either he or back up big man Darrell Arthur (think Channing Frye-lite) space the floor from the power forward position, shying away from post ups that include Afflalo, (especially when his matchup gives him a size or strength advantage) seems like a disservice to Denver.
Putting Ty Lawson in pick-and-rolls is still the Nuggets best source of offense, but Afflalo’s post game seems to be the team’s next best option for points. In general, the Nuggets seem to be built for inverting their offense -- letting their wings post mismatches while the bigs draw opponents to the perimeter -- instead of trying to force offense from traditional bigs that just aren’t effective post players. Afflalo and fellow wing Wilson Chandler may not remind people of Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant working opposing defenders on the block in ther heyday, but it could provide a boost for a team that floundering in the middle of the pack (the Nuggets are 14th in offensive efficiency in the RealGM rankings) offensively. And for this Denver team to survive in rugged Western Conference, they’re going to need all the points they can get.

We need more dynamic guard play and more importantly, we need inside-outside threats that can shoot the long ball, post up effectively or swing the ball when the options aren't good. Afflalo offers that in spades and is also a pretty good defender (despite losing a step). We haven't had a swingman like him since the Sprewell days.
His skillset is especially tantalizing if a team inverts their offense and has their big men shooting the long ball/spacing the floor. It's why I've been enarmored with the idea of bringing back Danilo Gallinari and Wilson Chandler along with Darrell Arthur. Combine all that with Melo, a top three lottery pick and a free agent PG and I think we are a shade short from overtaking the Bulls as toasts of the East. That formula is exactly what got us all those wins during the 2012-2013 season.
We have to trade with Denver. Forget the past, Is affalo a free agent?
Gallo and Wilson? They are "Knicks" but are they triangle worthy? Do they run a pure Triangle? Denver is not far from 8th spot in playoffs and gallo has missed nearly two seasons.
Do they want to give him more time to get his game back? While Bargnani has been a huge disappointment at the right price he can be a relamation project. Would Denver want him? In fact, for 6mm a year do we if he shows some promise? A huge part of our failure this year is not having a "Tony Kukoc" to kick it out to. Gallo and Bargs can do this. Not stars, but as role players.
Granted if Barg's can never get it together thats a different story. Sure its easy to rid ourselves of players as fans and replace them but player movement is not so easy. What does Denver want? What direction are they going in?

If they want to get out of Gallo's contract 1 year early then you can probably dangle Bargs contract. Assuming of course that they have given up on Gallo.

A two way shooting guard who's shooting is remotely consistent would be nice too
Its good we have folks here to offer ideas, then get mad when Knicks don't do what we want.

Aaron Afflalo (via player option), Wilson Chandler (via team option) and Darrell Arthur (via contract expiration), should all be available via free agency this offseason. And with $21 million in cap space, we should be able to sign Aaron Afflalo ($13 million per), Wilson Chandler ($6 million per) and Darrell Arthur ($4 million per via the mini-midlevel exception). Next offseason (2016) we should then be able to pick up Danilo due to JR's contract expiring and some cap manuverings....Mozgov would be trickier.
Looking at those guys' play and their body language, they all have one foot out the door (aside from Gallo). And I suspect that with the Nuggets' status as a middling team and redundant talent, the front office would be fine letting them walk out the door if they can get market value on their new deals. The reality is that the West's heirarchy is not going to change in the next few seasons and even if it did, there are better franchises with actual franchise players poised to replace the conference's top 8 (e.g. the Pelicans, the Kings, the Suns, etc.). With compelling young talent in Gary Harris and Jusuf Nurkic, and Ty Lawson and Kenneth Faried locked up in long-term deals, their best bet is to simply retool/rebuild. Because with all these guys entering UNRESTRICTED free agency and looking for their last big contracts, their hand will be forced anyway.

Because he's none of the things you mentioned. And there are only a few guys in the league with his skillset; a skillset that compliments our franchise player well. That for $11 million is reasonable.

Has there been any limitations to his athleticism? Has there been any setbacks for him this season? No! So why should we suspect that this isolated injury will be an issue in the future?

He is playing horribly. And his knee is hurt again and he is day to day. I think there is a very real concern anytime someone comes off the type of injury that Gallo suffered. It can end and/or seriously hinder a players career.

The guy hasn't played 2 seasons of basketball. These things are to be expected as his body re-acclimates itself to the rigors of the game. The beauty about stockpiling talent like him, Chandler and Arthur is that if when one guy is playing hurt or is injuried, the other guys can step up without their being a loss in the quality of play. Next to Melo, they can all adequately play the 3/4 spots, so no harm, no foul.

I don't get it
He's only under contract for one more season. If he checks out, we can extend him accordingly once his contract expires (i.e. less than $11 million per). If he doesn't, we can let him walk. At this point, we don't have any better options so why not roll the dice.
