Knicks · Carmelo will consider waiving no-trade clause: source (page 2)

I knew the whole no-trade clause thing would be a non-issue, because at the end of the day if we sucked enough, Melo would demand a trade. In fact, didn't 'a source' say at the time, part of his reasoning in signing with the knicks was guarantee the money first, and then he could always ask to be moved later (and I know people will blast him for that, but it's what most reasonable people would do in that situation).

I think we need to move Melo. It was a good enough idea attempting to rebuild around him, but I think this season combined with the realisation that there are no magic bullets in free agency (most of the top FA's are staying put), indicates it's going to take a lot longer to fix this mess. A top pick would be a great start, but I don't think Melo will have the patience or health for the three or so years it might take to start contending. If we keep him, likely we just miss the playoffs next year (or maybe scrape in). There's a lot more pressure if we keep him to blow our load this offseason, when the crop of agents available isn't worth it.

The problem is, I don't see how a deal with the Bulls is possible, even with a third team- we just can't match the salaries. I don't really see any other contender that he would fit with.

It's not a non-issue. He has to approve the team we trade him to, which probably limits us to about 3 or 4 possible trade partners rather than the whole league.

Exactly. And even if we work out a trade to a team of his liking he could still stop the trade because he feels the other is team giving up too much. Kobe did that back in the day when LAL had worked out a trade to Chicago.

What is your point? You think this is not going on now? You'd have to be a sucker not to realize a guy like Melo can't handle this and he'll look for an out. That plus Phil using the media to turn up the heat and Melo already on vacation and you think fans are suckers for believing Melo would waive his no-trade clause? The overriding point here is he got the money from us, now he can go somewhere else, something he could not achieve without signing here first. Plus, he gets a $17.5M bonus for being traded, something a greed head like Melo may like very much.

Well said!

Are you serious? He gets a $17.5 mil bonus for being traded? That's going to make it even harder to trade him. Is the 15% trade kicker just for the season he's traded in or does his salary go up by 15% every year if he's traded?

Agree. Also the second or third paragraph says Anthony has no desire to be traded right now. The media is definitely turning up the heat though.

If he does waive his no trade this season then fuck him

Phil and Dolan are the ones to be upset at. I expect a player to be very picky about waiving his no trade clause. Otherwise, why even ask for it to be put in?

As I understand it, it's a cumulative lump sum against the whole contract. It would only be triggered by a trade and it seems to come out of Dolan's pocket, so if he will pay it then it won't factor into other club's reasoning for taking Melo.

Nonsense! He blew the Knicks up when he wouldn't wait for Free Agency because he might lose a few million! Give me a break!

Doesn't matter if it comes out of Dolan's pocket

I'm pretty sure it comes out of the new team's pocket

The complete contract! Melo wouldn't have it any other way!

CrushAlot @ 12/12/2014 6:56 AM
If Melo is moved my guess is it is for a Nash/Lin package to the Lakers. This deal may have been there all a long for Phil. Not sure it is the best deal around but taking on those two huge contracts helps the Lakers. The poison pill may offset the trade kicker.

I think the team he's traded to pays it!

Salaries match. At least that bails us out of Melo's contract. It doesn't really do anything else for us but the bail out would be great. Lakers would be taking on over $100 mil more in salary than they're trading out though and I still don't think this would make them a playoff team.

It is the team trading away the player that is responsible for paying the bonus — unless the contract was signed prior to the 2011 Collective Bargaining Agreement (Toronto Raptors’ Amir Johnson and Cleveland Cavaliers’ Anderson Varejao), which is then paid by the acquiring franchise.

well that's good.
I'm sure Dolan would be pissed if they re-signed him just to play 2 months here and had to paid the $17 mil trade kicker though.

I'm reading up on trade kickers now. According to Larry Coon a trade kicker counts against the total value of a players contact but it can bring the total value of the contract over the maximum allowed. I'm not going to bother running the numbers but I'd guess that this means Melo would get the full max allowed.

Right, and that's why I'm saying he'd be pissed.
These two awful months with Melo would cost him an additional $17 mil

Wow, you seem very emotional right now. It is okay. Just breath. Of course Melo would waive his no-trade clause. The clause is not there for a player not to be traded the clause is there to not be traded to just anyone. The real suckers are people who fall for this stuff and it looks like you have. It happens.

Run me down a list of teams that have salary to match what Carmelo is making without gutting that team? If the heat is on him like you say then surely he would not want to bring that heat with him to his new team. so he would try to go without hurting the new team's nucleus.

Don't be a dummy and play that don't be emotional nonsense here. I responded with real logic, not hysteria. Give me a break

Plus Max. It puts him at $12M over the max. It basically gives him 5.5 years of max money for playing 5 years. His advisors know their money game.
