I would agree, but then again who foresaw Dallas being this good? Or indeed Dallas being as good as they were last season? Or even in the year they actually won the championship. Or that the Hawks would be as good as they've been these past two years. Sometimes teams are better than the sum of their parts. Not sure if that team would be, but you can't always tell.

I've periodically pointed out players that I thought were discounts like Harden and Millsap (at 2 yrs, $19 mil). Every player could be good or bad depending on what you give up to get him, though. You can't in advance list players we should get but I can say which deals we should have been able to beat. You also can outline the philosophy you'd use to make decisions, which I've done before.
I do occasionally propose trades when I'm bored. I recently listed in a previous thread a few trades I would try to do to get out of Melo's contract.

If Okafor/Towns/Miles pans out right away that's potentially a top 4 team in the crappy East. We then go into the Summer of 2016 with a good, young, improving team with potential and the cap jumps $20M or whatever it's going to jump, JR comes off the books, and we have a bunch more cap space to try and flesh out the rest of the roster.
By thy way, if we don't make the terrible Tyson trade this Summer we have more assets, more cap space, and have a better chance of fleshing out our roster.

No one we sign will make us a contender on paper but that's ok. You just need to sign the best players you can who fit and hope it comes together. It takes luck too. Dallas didn't have a championship team on paper, it just came together.

I'd rather over Butler and Tobias Harris than Thad Young. There's no way I can Reggie Jackson the max. Hopefully, his demands are reasonable. $7 to $8M is what I would pencil him in for. Maybe we can pry Teague from Atlanta now that Schroeder is performing?

Yeah, I've liked Teague for a while now too and feel the same way you do about Jackson. But I still have a bit of a soft spot for George Hill. He's been injured all season and is grossly overpaid but his skillset is what we need on this team and we might be able to get him for cheap. Anyway, should be interesting to see how things work themselves out this offseason.

I think we should follow the Mavs strategy of rebuilding- they lucked out on the big fish last season, but made some astute reasonable signings instead, plus some vets to increase the IQ of the team, then they took advantage of trade opportunities and landed an overpaid free agent the following offseason, but it seems to be working out.

I think Jackson will have the same problem trying to actually build a team this summer. Gasol is the biggest name but he's not coming here and the best of the rest are all restricted. If we really plan on building around Melo the next several years our only real hope is nailing our 1st round pick this year.

The problem with that is Dallas was rebuilding around a better overall team than what we have (MUCH better) and a better player in Dirk.
I don't think making a run at Thaddeous Young and Robin lopez was Phil's selling point to Melo last summer...

I think you do what you can to get him help like this while maintaining flexibility. You make sure you get back into the playoffs by adding some talent, then make sure to have the assets for a big move if needed. For example, put a team like what hid suggested on the floor, hope it mixed well, then you have the lottery selection to use for one last big move when needed. Instead of Thad young I would probably want tabias harris who will be a little more expensive but has better upside. Adding players like harris, lopez, and the lottery pick gets you younger, better, and still allows another big move when it comes up.
Were not getting Lopez and wed' have 0 interior scoring and porous D TERRIBLE.
