IIRC, a buyout only offers the Knicks savings from a cash perspective, but not a salary cap perspective.
The question would seem to be would STAT be able to garner anything other than a veteran's minimum deal, even from a contender? He can't shoot a three point shot, he can't defend, he refuses to bang it out in the post. He's got limited utility except to flow a 2nd unit offense through as a face the basket big.
My guess is the hope for the veteran player is he gets enough of a new contract to offset what he leaves on the table to buy his freedom.
Maybe OKC could use some pivot offense ( Steven Adams and Kendrick Perkins aren't going to give you much) esp when they have Roberson on the floor. Not sure they want the defensive trade offs. Also Captain 55 percent would eat into touches for Durant and Westbrook, because once he gets the ball, he's not passing it on.
There's reason for the Knicks to do it, but not a ton of upside for STAT to do it IMHO
We'd get some cap relief for the difference of buyout
I think it would be done to open a roster spot. My guess is it would only save the Knicks a little bit of money. Also, I think Amare would sign a vet minimum deal just to the end of the season and then look into pursuing something more lucrative.

Yeah the money saved might be at best $3mil off the cap[don't think he accepts a bigger cut than this]
But it could be a little more when it comes to Tax dollars
Ultimately the main thing is to produce a roster spot
You know he's broken down so it's not fair to bark the guy especially when he came here when nobody else would. He put the team in his back that first season and was a legit mvp candidate until they traded for Melo and he decides to fight fire extinguishers, and blow his back out doing trick dunks on the warm up line.
But then it is fair because of his side show comments and actions off the court. "Phenomenal shape"... gaining 40 lbs of muscle after he hurt his back. Him growing an inch because of stretching. All of a sudden he's captain Hebrew the wine baths, taking rest days when we need him to compete....calls himself a beast but can't average more than 7 rebounds a game and plays no defense. He gave himself the nickname "stat".... the guy is a corn ball.
Anyway, what is taking so long to dump him? Maybe we wanna try to trade him. Maybe we want to keep him so we can try and retain him in the off season. I dunno man but I'm done

Please stop he came here to get $100mil nobody else would offer him
It took a patching up between he and D'AnToni to even make it possible after the money was presented

good post. All of it. Ive been a big Amare fan, but its just time to move on. His brain and body are not even remotely on the same page. He was aa great influence on the young guys that first year and it was really enjoyable. He helped start a turn around, but his body is broken and we just need to ride any gimpy horses.
I think the Knicks just do the right thing by him, even if it costs them. I think it sends a good message to other players in the league. Thanks and sorry it didnt work out, go now and be free.

Was he really, because once the team caught wind
Trade rumors were swirling he said the young guys would have to "SUCK IT UP"
Is that influential leadership?
And early when the team got of to a slow start
He said these guys haven't won much and they can't get used to losing I'm not used to this
Is that influential leadership?
Amar'e was your typical "THE CITY IS MINE" player until his body betrayed him
Once it did he saw just how vulnerable one can be when basketball opportunity is no longer on your side
I've also never heard too mnay players who've played with Amar'e
Speak of him and leadership in the same breath
yea he was. Led NBA in 4th qtr scoring. Gallo and Chandler were playing great. Go nitpick someone else's posts. I have no desire to debate with you how well Amare played that first year before the CA trade
From what I'm hearing, it's totally his decision, so it's not like Phil is forcing him out

ahh yes...reminiscing about 30 games out of 5 years. that's like me thinking about bargs 13 game stretch where he turned into an all star.

he was spiraling already before CA.
knick fans are attached to him due to the lack of anyone else.
Not a bad guy just did way more silly talking than playing.
Blame him or not, but no sound minded people would say that it was not a complete bust of a move.

of course... he never played. 100% bust.

If we start sucking out the poison on defense, we'll have to back up a truck to get rid of guys.

sarcasm? ok.
100 million for what he gave us (when nobody else would go near him != Phoenix(3x60)? Eddy Curry played too and so did bargs. I guess that they were not complete busts.

no sarcasm at all.. Im totall serious. I loved Amare, I was a big fan but he simply couldnt stay on the court enough to help the Knicks. He had like a great first 2 months and then fizzled. It was enough to give us a taste followed but 4 years off annoyance. They should have amnestied him but chose Billups instead.
We got nothing from the Amare signing. At the time I thought offering Joe Johnson the max was utterly insane, but hindsight? JJ would have been a nice player. Big picture? Amare gave us nada. It just didnt work out.

I think that we should hire him as a coach instead next year.
This way, he can continue to sit on the bench in a suit (and a kippah?) and his salary won't count against the salary cap.

Getting numbers has nothing to do with leadership
Stat got his numbers in Phx but was by no means a leader
Chandler and Gallo were getting similar production before Stat's arrival
Stat did good for Stat for half a season that's it, no need to put a Cinderella dress and slippers on his time here
Matter of fact I'd go as far to say Stat needs[ed] guys like Gallo and Chandler
Because he never received such accolades[Top MVP consideration] in his career
Until he played with them

Oh sorry ... completely agree with everything (aside from the JJ part :-))
If they amenestied him then this could have been a whole diff balgame.
People laughed and mocked the amnesty idea when it was mentioned at the time. They are no longer laughing but crying.

Amare's efficiency tanked with Gallo and Willow. Go check. He just became a more inefficient volume shooter.
Oh ... right! that's when he started shooting the midrange jumper - hahahah

Actually Stat was beasting around the rim with them, he was finishing in the paint like a mad man
You can argue the efficiency standpoint all you want as you're tunnel vision there
Fact remains he was a Top MVP candidate for half a season playing with them
