He has shown signs of being a very decent ballplayer. His stamina needs to move up--as Ive brought up before--he runs out of steam after 15-18 minutes. But going 4 ward out of all the secondary pieces on the team--Smith seems like a guy who can stick. He can play with either Okafor or Towns easily. That would drive Melo back to 3 where he probably needs to be. If he plays this way down the stretch--it will cost more than a 1 year 3mm $ contract however and he knows hes playing for $$$ right now.
At his position, he is not producing as he should. He does t rebound well, and doesn't defend. Let him walk. We can find a more rugged big man in free agency.
I wouldn't be opposed to lining him up next to towns or ok4 next year
Yeah the dude seems like he should be a higher tier player. That jumpshot is money. He's shown a nice baseline spin to the rack, turn around jumpers and decent ability to put it on the floor. He literally needs to get his life together. Like how good do you want to be bitch? He could be like Tom Gugliotta if he really wanted to.

The problem is there are so few rugged rim protectors and those guys give you nothing in terms of shooting to stretch the floor, passing and IQ.
At least with Jason you have a big who can stretch the floor, pass and play smart.
Towns can protect the rim. Not sure how a Jason, ok4, Melo front court will fair defensively. Probably really poor

To hell to J Smith. His jumper is all he has. You should require a lot more from your big man.

But man needs to be able to hit an open shot. Do you want Dalembert back? There is a rim protector who gives you zero offensively and poor basketball IQ and understanding of the triangle

agree to a point, but those "requirements" come with a price tag. I mean do you want to pay Jason Smith $5mm a year or Greg Monroe or DeAndre Jordan $15mm a year?
Jason Smith can play a nice role here yea. Ask him to do too much and he gets really really exposed. Lets see the other parts

I know he can "sometimes" make a few shots, but I don't want this softie around long term. He is not physical, and has confidence issues. When the jumper is not falling, he is worthless. Is this what you really want from one of your 7 footer????
We could also trade him at the deadline for an asset and then look to FA to see if hed be vibale back here--doesnt matter if he is or not the last 30 games.
Good role player asked to play starter minutes. Get him into starter minute shape he could fall apart.
Not all players are built to be starters. This guy off the bench for 20 minutes a nite on a good team can be vital.
Lots of big rugged guys with limited offensive game. You gotta score points.

Exactly. Smith can be retained for somewhat cheap. He is a great shooter and passer for a big man, and a perfect fit for the triangle. He's not a great rebounder or defender but let's put him next to someone who is and it will be fine. He can hopefully improve over time. He's a solid complimentary player.

He's been playing a lot better and looking like the guy Phil intended to sign. Maybe he just needed time to recover from the injury he had last year.
His injury history is a concern so you limit him to 20mins a night and don't pay him more than $3.5mil per

That's putting it mildly. Still, I'd keep Smith at the right price. He has a nice stroke and passes well, both attribute that contribute in the Triangle. But he needs to improve his conditioning and play more ruggedly on defense (i.e., those go together - he struggles on D because he is gassed).
Knicks1969 wrote:I want Kanter
Kanter is another finesse guy and will cost more. He is not a rugged rim protector

Yeah, the dude is a spot starter at the most. People seem to forget how easily Nikolas Vucevic had his way with Smith. Smith is too weak physically and is too poor a rebounder to by counted on as a full time starter.

Fair points

Not many rugged rim protectors to be had with basic fundamental offensive skill. Not saying we should get kanter just because. I would take kanter over guys like Monroe or even Robin Lopez. Both very different players but both are guys that are going to have a price tag well higher than what they are really worth

Robin Lopez is a rim protector with pretty solid offensive IQ.
I think Lopez is perfect at the right price. So is Gasol
