Knicks · Have We Even Won a Trade Since Sprewell? (page 1)

We got Sprewell
Right before, we got Camby
And 2 years before that, we got LJ

3 very good trades in the late 90's

have we won any trades since them?

Perhaps these 2 but that is it:

8/5/2004: Knicks acquire Jamal Crawford and Jerome Williams in exchange for Othella Harrington, Frank Williams, Dikembe Mutombo, and Cezary Trybanski. (This is one of those where it's important to remember that Crawford was signed-and-traded. (Seven years, $56 million, y'all).)

2/24/2005: Knicks acquire Malik Rose, a 2005 first-rounder (David Lee), a 2006 first-rounder (Mardy Collins), and cash in exchange for Nazr Mohammed and Jamison Brewer.

i happen to think that we won the melo deal if you just look at what was traded and forget that we didn't need to give up that much...

that arguable at best but lets leave that one out as to not derail this thread.

I should have put (outside of the Melo arguments/discussion)

id say the melo trade was about even. I agree we havent really won a trade since sprewell
FistOfOakley @ 2/16/2015 4:39 PM
i wouldn't count those deals either since GS had to trade sprewell given what happened...

and even the LJ trade ... there were very few teams willing and able to take on his contract given his back problems... this might be a very slight win if you take into account the contract he signed...

FistOfOakley @ 2/16/2015 4:40 PM
and camby for oak was by far the best deal we've ever made.... even though it did pain me to see oak go...

yeah ... LJ was a starphuck move that actually worked out.

Also, Mason was a total beast in Charlotte his first year. I think he was an mvp candidate. LJ might have been the better fit for the Knicks but Mase at that point was the better player.

Define MVP candidate? Where did he finish in MVP voting 15th?

I thought he was fourth. It looks like he might have been 9th.

Checked bball reference. He was a beast that year. He played over 3000 minutes, led the league in minutes per game, was third in rebounding per game, was second team all defense, third team all nba, and averaged just under 6 assists a game.

I liked the LJ move, but that move is questionable when you consider Mase was the best player in that deal. The Camby deal worked for us though. I think Spree for Van Horn was a wash.

so it looks like we lost that trade too, but we just got lucky that LJ was not a bust and a really good glue guy.

I thought at the time the Knicks didnt win the trade. But maybe Mase needed to go. JVG was a lot more upset when Oak was moved.

And LJ schooled him in the playoffs

Also Mason's career was over after the 96-97 season. LJ was still highly productive through 1999. He helped propel the 1999 run with the 4pt play and his overall leadership & defense

No way did we lose that trade. Like I said Mason was done by 97. LJ was a huge part of the Knicks from 1996-2000

Mase was in all star in 2001. Not sure where you are coming up with his career being over and not being productive after 97.

yeah, that's not likely to happen.

I agree with FistofOak, but not too many people are interested in looking at what our W/L record was before Melo and what it was immediately after the trade. Even 37 wins was an improvement.

How do you reconcile "just look at what was traded" and "give up that much"? You'll notice your most vocal Denver apologists don't have alot to say anymore, do they, all these years later when Denver was supposed to be counting chips or at least trips to the WCF?

jrodmc @ 2/17/2015 10:29 AM
I miss Spree.... that was a great trade that we effed up by playing him out of position in deference to H20 and his $100 mil..
gunsnewing @ 2/17/2015 10:31 AM
oh shit your right. Damn amnesia!
