Knicks · Whats Monroe's max number? (page 1)

fishmike @ 2/17/2015 12:12 PM
I know since this will be his first he would get less than someone like Adridge. More I think about it the more I think Monroe is the better value.

Turns 25 next year
Great size
One of the best passing bigs (if not THE best) in the NBA
Excellent rebounder
Very mobile can play both 4/5 and runs floor really well

He's such a good ball mover I can easily see him being Phil's #1

His max is 25% of the salary cap; figure $15M+.

nixluva @ 2/17/2015 12:22 PM
Monroe is eligible for a max of 25% of the cap which should be $66.5 mil, which would make his cap around $16.6 mil. Knicks obviously have enough money to do that if it was necessary. It would be up to him to decide if he wants to stay in Detroit now or take a chance on a bigger stage but with a team that is more of a question mark. By then we would have made our draft pick and depending on who it is, he would be looking at a team with a high draft pick, maybe Russell and Melo. That could be a very nice combo.
fishmike @ 2/17/2015 12:26 PM
If we got OK4 I wouldnt pursue Monroe. Any other drafted player I would offer him that $15-$16mm. I know its a lot but at 25 years old I think this guy is ready to become one of the best bigs in the NBA. I would be paying for upside, which I feel he still has plenty off.

On the other hand -- Towns and Monroe would fit very nicely next to each other.

Both are +passers and rebounders.

Towns strengths in shooting/shot-blocking offset Monroe's primary weaknesses. Monroe could be our primary post scoring option while Towns fills out over the next few years.

Plus Monroe will only be 25 I believe next year -- so he'd be able to grow with Towns.

If we draft Towns -- Monroe would be a primary target IMO. Partially because he is also attainable.

I like your thinking.

Whereas drafting Ok4 will require signing a rim protector to clean up for OK4 & Melo's lack of defense. Rim protectors are hard to come buy. Larry Sanders is out there but he can easily be the next Keon Clark with addiction problems and there are like 29 teams he'd choose first

nixluva @ 2/17/2015 12:38 PM
It's really going to come down to the draft and who we end up getting. That will dictate the Free Agent direction and really it helps to clarify so much about the team going forward. Whoever we draft will become a huge piece of the future of the franchise. If i'm Phil I then spend big on a young FA like Monroe if we draft Russell or Mudiay. I'm actually hoping we can get a Guard cuz the bigs coming out will need some time to really adjust to the NBA level. Not that it would be easy for a guard, but I think we really need a huge improvement on the perimeter for this team to improve. We lack that dangerous SG in this offense. A SG that can break a D down and create havoc and not just be a stationary 3pt shooter, but also be a threat on the move and passing. A guard like that would make Monroe and Melo much more effective.

totally agree.

Maybe we can uncover another Mozgov
franco12 @ 2/17/2015 12:55 PM
I'd definitely prefer Monroe over Aldridge. Less money, younger with upside.
mreinman @ 2/17/2015 1:02 PM
this guy does not have a good AST : TOV ration so I don't know why some say that he is a good passer.

his defense is really not good and is one of the worst shot blockers with his mini arms.

he is a very good rebounder which is about all that he is very good at.

If detroit lets him go and I assume that they will then we should not be the ones to do the stupid thing and max this guy out.

8-10 million per is all that I would offer.

gunsnewing @ 2/17/2015 1:06 PM
thats what makes him somewhat attractive he's not and shouldn't be a max guy but he could fit here
smackeddog @ 2/17/2015 1:20 PM
Monroe is certainly realistic, due to his lack of commitment to returning to the Pistons. Plus due the the salary cap bump coming up in a couple of years, suddenly the extra year the Pistons can offer doesn't seem as advantageous.

Like I said on another thread, I know it's risky but I'm kind of warming to the idea of signing younger players with upside. I'd say our best 2 most recent signings were Jamal Crawford and Alan Houston. We always seem to have bad luck with past-their-prime vets. Not saying it's my plan A, but it might work.

we should be looking for young CHEAP players with upside.

I don't like either and I'm the one that made the LaMarcus thread....I just want to win baby.

Everything starts with the draft. Whoever we get will dictate the rest of the off season.

youtube his highlights and come back to me. This guy is one of the best passers Ive seen in a long time. Look at his film a bit and I think you will agree. His passes to cutting guards are excellent. He could easily be a 4-5 assist guy in this offense.

His wingspan is 7-2... no alligator arms here.

No way $8-$10mm gets it done. I bet Pistons offer $12mm to start over 5 years and max raises. I think Knicks need to come in around $14-$15mm to make it happen.

Such as? I don't think people get how hyper inflated salaries are going to be this offseason- very few good free agents who are realistically leaving their teams, plus the salary cap explosion in 2 years= everyone is going to be over way paid.

Guys like Kris Middleton might be obtainable on $8mil though (I'd like sun to sign him), but still expensive

He is a good passer- his stats are bad because with Jennings and Josh Smith on the team, Monroe stopped daring to pass (because he would never get it back).

gunsnewing @ 2/17/2015 1:56 PM
I'd sign him for $11-13mil per
nyk4ever @ 2/17/2015 2:01 PM
fish.. would you be happy with either towns or okafor, monroe and dragic? i'd be pretty happy with that offseason personally. those 3 guys fit right into the triangle perfectly.

When I say "not a good passer", I don't mean that he does not know how to, his passing numbers are just not good.

Can he pass in this system and average 4-5 assists? Maybe ... lets see if Phil thinks he can. I don't like assuming that a player can be a good passer if he was in a different system.
