"I got my haircut correct like Anthony Mason"... Sleep in Power
WaltLongmire@ 2/28/2015 12:08 PM
RIP
In his prime he was a freak in terms of versatility. He was like a Swiss Army Knife on the court. He could guard just about any position, and on offense, the only thing he could not do is shoot from deep.
Great "glue" player. He would have to adjust (an understatement) his D if he was playing today, but I think Jackson and Fisher would love to have a guy like this on today's Knicks. Great passer and ball handler with some nice post moves and an underrated midrange jumper that would have been perfect for the Triangle, and who else would you want setting a screen.
Glad I got a chance to see him play.
So it goes.

Can't believe this, he's died way too soon. Really tough for his kids to lose their dad at such a young age. Seems like only a few years ago we were watching him play for the Knicks.

So true. Swiss army knife is a great comparison. I still marvel at his ball handling abilities. He was skilled enough to bring the ball up against pressure then turn around and guard the post. 6' 7" and tough as nails R.I.P Anthony Mason.
The only time I saw Shaq look like "I don't want any of this look". is one time when he and Mase collided under the basket and both wound up on ground. Shaq got up with a I'm not going to start nothing look and Mase went to the free throw line.

Prayers to the family and friends. RIP Anthony Mason.

RIP Mase! Really hurts- such a great player- he inspired anyone to "make it" when you didn't get that first chance- by hard work and being tough- what a loss...
NumberTwoPencil@ 2/28/2015 1:33 PM
Yeah, at times, Mase was the Draymond Green of the 90s Knicks. I was looking forward to Mase resurfacing as an assistant coach. Alas, 48 is way too young.
Does anyone here remember the details of Mase's fade with a typo? IIRC, the Knicks were playing in Charlotte and Mase got a fade and the barber misspelled his name (as "mace"?) or got Knicks wrong (maybe as "Knikes"?). There was no time to correct the typo and, again, IIRC, Mase either played a half with the typo or shaved half his head to get rid of it. I just looked around and couldn't find a photo of it on the internets. Maybe I'm misremembering but, nah, that would have only happened to Mase. I'm pretty sure the NYT ran a photo of the typo on Mase's head the next day but . . .

I hoped he would pull through...somehow.
What a sad day. First Spock, now Mase. RIP man. You deserved a longer life than that.

RIP Mase, a true Knick and one of my all time favorites
SupremeCommander@ 2/28/2015 2:05 PM

RIP. Knick for Life.

One of the greats and a key member of the first Knicks teams I watched. RIP Mase.
I thought JR's post about him was great and just another reason I lament giving away JR and Iman for nothing.
I'll be surprised if it happens but Dolan/MSG/Knicks really should do Mase and his family right. I'm not sure what would be best (other than whatever his family wants) but Mase deserves more than video clips on the big monitor at halftime. A scholarship or two to Tennessee State? Free fades to every citizen of NYC? Both of his kids get to start on the Knicks for the rest of the season?
(Hmmmm, no disrespect to JR but that's more evidence that. . . some day JR is going to rock a college English class.)

Peter Vecsey on the WFAN just told a story that Mason, on his death bed a couple of days ago, indicated to his family that he wanted to hear Pat Riley's voice once more.
They managed to get Riley, and even though Mason was unable to converse with him, he was able to listen to Riley talk to him for a time, and according to Vecsey, Mason's family said it cheered him up as much as possible given the circumstances.
Edit- this was over the phone, not in person.

That's awesome - sad the way things went down with Riley and the Knicks and the end of that squads run but glad to hear he was able to reconnect and give Mase some peace before he passed.

Glad to hear that Mase got his wish. Very moving.

Wow.

Nice to hear the Riley story. Sad when some of these athletes have heart problems.
Great guy. Tough as nails.
The one thing about him that drove me nuts was when he got the ball passed to him in the post on the low block, with no man behind him, open, and he would pass the ball out again.
But his effort was never in question. The heart of a champion.

Its pricey, but if anyone is interested, Mitchell&Ness sells and NBA authentic 1991-92 Mason jersey.
