If Riley were here at the same time as Dolan he would have picked up that nebulous little fuk and dumped him head first into a trash can. Actually, Riley would fax Dolan his middle finger and be done with him. They'd never co-exist.

He was a really big loss for the knicks no one can deny that.
I was a big fan of Riley's like most Knick fans, but it was time to move on. Riley had a great run but it was coming to an end. I don't fault Riley for leaving, I do fault him for how he left, considering how the fans treated him like a conquering hero just for contending. Took a while for Riley to get it right, never would have gotten the time with Dolan.
there was no bringing him back... he wanted a whole lot.. far away more than what any coach got... knicks told him he was crazy.. which he was... and he got something close from a desperate owner... everything worked out in the end... except we got stuck with dolan after so many years...
dolan who incidentally had to give another famous coach full control out of desperation after messing things up for over a decade...
the thread title is the problem... Riley wasnt the man who got away. He was the man who got HIS way. He got to be the boss of literally everything and own a slice of the team. Some offers you just cant match. The tabloids can write PAt the Rat but it wasnt just money, he got a level of control MSG cant offer.

Funny, I think about this all the time. Same thing happened to the Jets with Belichik. Imagine how differently both fortunes of these teams would have changed. With Riley I think it also was a power struggle with Checketts but if somehow we could have kept Riley it would have been worth it. Riley rebuilt the Heat 3 times- getting Mourning, Shaq and then Lebron. This guy gets it and knows how to build winners.

The guy finds gems left in the gutter nearly yearly he refurbishes players he's just a huge winner and only popovich is on the same plane. Riley didn't spend his career with Jordan Kobe or Duncan either

Magic, Worthy, Jabbar, wade, Shaq, LBJ, Wade, Bosh... His championship rosters were stocked including guys considered the best players of their era.
