I'm not sure who was responsible and I'm not sure Dolan wouldve messed it up anyway--but we shouldve paid Pat Riley almost anything he wanted and given him full control. This was the worst moves the Knicks made in my 40 years as a fan. We had "the man" and we fcked it up.
If Riley were here at the same time as Dolan he would have picked up that nebulous little fuk and dumped him head first into a trash can. Actually, Riley would fax Dolan his middle finger and be done with him. They'd never co-exist.
This franchise could only pray to have a GM of Riley's caliber. Instead, we got a gilded peacock who thought it would be really neat to be a GM before settling into retirement.
HINDSIGHT IS 20/20
[Urban Definition] http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.ph...
An individual has a realization about the event that should have been obvious all along, yet they didn't catch on because they were acting in the heat of the moment.
Come on Briggs....you are better than this!
Again????
Aronson gave him a piece of the team. Dolan could not give him a piece of Cablevision.
It was an absurd amount of money.
Its was all good until he got Wade and Shaq right? Until then knick and JVG beat them every year with the exception of "The fight".
Riles has tanked and rebuilt. Clearing cap for Superfriends was a hell of a thing.
Really Briggs? Adjust the meds Bro!
We kicked his ass pretty much every year back in the late 90s.

And the Bulls kicked ours. So what? Miami was a great rivalry and Patrick vs. Zo was a great matchup. That hardly makes Riley look bad.

and lets not forget that Riles was responsible for that knicks team that beat Miami.
He was a really big loss for the knicks no one can deny that.
I was a big fan of Riley's like most Knick fans, but it was time to move on. Riley had a great run but it was coming to an end. I don't fault Riley for leaving, I do fault him for how he left, considering how the fans treated him like a conquering hero just for contending. Took a while for Riley to get it right, never would have gotten the time with Dolan.
there was no bringing him back... he wanted a whole lot.. far away more than what any coach got... knicks told him he was crazy.. which he was... and he got something close from a desperate owner... everything worked out in the end... except we got stuck with dolan after so many years...
dolan who incidentally had to give another famous coach full control out of desperation after messing things up for over a decade...
the thread title is the problem... Riley wasnt the man who got away. He was the man who got HIS way. He got to be the boss of literally everything and own a slice of the team. Some offers you just cant match. The tabloids can write PAt the Rat but it wasnt just money, he got a level of control MSG cant offer.

Riley was smart to leave. If he were to remain with the Knicks, J dolan would have tarnished his legacy.

Funny, I think about this all the time. Same thing happened to the Jets with Belichik. Imagine how differently both fortunes of these teams would have changed. With Riley I think it also was a power struggle with Checketts but if somehow we could have kept Riley it would have been worth it. Riley rebuilt the Heat 3 times- getting Mourning, Shaq and then Lebron. This guy gets it and knows how to build winners.

Yeah but Riley upped the ante with his training camps in Miami. Didn't he have personal trainers for each players, dieticians etc.? Beating those teams was sweet every year.

He was a huge loss but JVG was a really good coach and worked his guys hard also. Who was the guy that came to Knicks camp and said he was in shape but not in Coach Gundy shape?
Riley is a recruiter. He signs the right players. We've got Phil who gave Lil' Melo the biggest contract in the NBA. Phil is not in Pat's league. So if anybody huffs and puffs about how much of a draw Phil is they better hope his zen mastery translates this off-season, because the vapor surrounding his legend has almost worn off.
Riley is probably the best recruiter of all time from what I've seen. That guy is the real Svengali.

Riley signed Bosh to the same deal as Melo and lost the best player of this era to free agency this past offseason. Getting him was brilliant but collusion between players helped a lot and also at least in part lead to the lock out. How does the Dragic deal look if he leaves as a free agent or if Bosh is unable to come back?

Bosh is a better player than Melo. Melo's wear and tear was predictable as hell. Bosh's blood clots were not.
Nobody was retaining Lebron, not Riley, not Jesus, when Lebron had a narrative about "Coming Home" he was was going to follow. That's not on Riley unless you're saying he lacks negotiating skills and he failed to convince Lebron to stay. I think we all know Lebron's script precluded any such outcome.
And you'd take collusion any day of the week if it benefitted your team and the perp didn't get caught.
If Dragic leaves, then that is egg on the face. You don't believe that will happen though. Riley doesn't give that up for a rental.
Why are you enumerating such things anyway? Is there a point?
Riley has been a way above average GM. So far, Phil is wading in the kiddie pool.

Yeah the point is I don't think Riley is as good as you make him out to be. I think he is very good but saying that Bosh holds up and Melo doesn't? How do you know? Both guys are from the same draft class. If you are slamming Phil based on Bosh/Melo what is your point? Riley did the same thing and Riley with Bosh and would have resigned Melo if he was on his team.

I already answered that. Reread

Riley has been the best combination coach executive off all time. He's rebuilt the heat three times with 3 championships and 4 finals and coached the Knicks to the finals. The guy finds gems left in the gutter nearly yearly he refurbishes players he's just a huge winner and only popovich is on the same plane. Riley didn't spend his career with Jordan Kobe or Duncan either

Magic, Worthy, Jabbar, wade, Shaq, LBJ, Wade, Bosh... His championship rosters were stocked including guys considered the best players of their era.
