Nothing is guaranteed. Some of the most hyped picks have been mediocre or busts. They could all be stars, but it is not a lock.
The odds of a top 4 pick being an all star or franchise player is roughly 67% in the last 15 years. Only 1 top 4 pick has been traded in the last 15 years(Andrew Wiggins) obviously 59/60 or less than 1% Absolute bust potential is less than 10%
can we afford to draft:
Evan Turner
Wesley Johnson
Dion Waiters
MKG
Favors
Kanter
Otto Porter
Codey Zeller
We can't afford to not hit big and to end up with crap to mid level talent.
I think the two post players odds of being a bust this year are only based on injury. I cannot see a scenario where either of those players are NOT considered good to very good and or better than that. If Towns really grows 3 more inches--he could be a player that dominates NBA baskteball.
all I am saying that there are very few guarantees ... even in the top 4.
Towns may not grow and be just a good player
Ok4 may become Al Jefferson or Eddie Curry
Russell ... kid will be good and maybe the least risk and perhaps the least reward
Mudiay? Easy bust potential
76ers can afford to be wrong, we can't ... thats not good odds
I agree....we can't afford to miss.
We also can't afford to take the safe route like Portland did twice, and passed on Jordan and Durrant.
Thats my only fear with taking the safe pick.
What exactly is a safe pick? Because if your wrong on a safe pick, how was it ever safe to pick him
OK....I see you are stuck on the word safe. For the record, there is no safe pick ever. Everybody is prone to injuries. How about less riskier pick? or low risk pick?
That would be OK4, since he has a proven talent to score in the post. At lease you know what he is good at. Then you can build from there.
Most potential pick? That would be Towns, since he's shown glimpses of becoming an all around player on both ends. Scores inside and out. defends multiple positions, blocks shots, protects rim, and rebounds. willing passer.
Playing it safe means trading that pick for a proven star.

Just to watch that star get injured.....Like you said, nothing is safe in the NBA. But that definitely seems like a Phil type move. It will cause a lot of fans to jump ship, but it wouldn't surprise me. Phil will not go through another season like this ever again.....So he's clearly in win now mode, while keeping enough for Durant in 2016.
He will grab Towns. Mark this post. KAT represents the best combination of size and skills, best fit for triangle (amazing passer, solid shooter), best defensive effort, solid rebounding.
If we get top pick or if KAT available at our top 4 pick, we will take him.
crzymdups wrote:Towns, Russell and OK4 are definitely the top three prospects. I have a hard time believing OK4 won't go first overall.Though I still think Russell will be the best player in this draft. The rules in the NBA are geared toward making guys with his size and skill set stars these days (see Steph Curry and Russell Westbrook, etc)
Would be great to have a first rate PG again, its been a long time. I get jealous of other teams who have guards who can slice and dice through traffic, shoot, or find the open man with ease.
It'll be interesting to see how the tournament changes people's perceptions of the top 10-15 guys. Some guys make a lot of money by having good tourneys.
I think Chris Taft was ranked as high as no.6 on NBAdraft.net as late as early March one draft. His team didn't make the tourney, maybe he blew some workouts, I think he wound up going undrafted.
Didn't Taft go 30 to the Clippers or Golden State or something. I remember many of us wanted the Knicks to draft him.
Exit: Actually I think we were pissed we drafted David Lee at 30 ahead of him

I want to say Taft dropped because his pre-draft physical raised a red flag. For every Doug Christie and Jared Sullied that pan out despite potential health issues, there are guys like Chris Taft who flame out.

I remember that draft- what exactly was the deal with Taft, was it lack talent or lack of work ethic? Was that the same draft where Gerald green fell too?
Yup 2005 draft. I liked Bogut, Bynum. Granger & Green but we took Frye the "safe pick"
Taft went #42
Nate 21
Lee 30

Yea he played one season for GS and averaged 2pts. Last time he played was in Finland. They waived him for health reasons
