Knicks · Woodson: If I were Knicks coach, I would’ve fought to keep Chandler (page 2)

It goes beyond the players. Anyone who speaks their mind because they see how dysfunctional an organization the Knicks are become vilified and ostracized.

Look no forward than Chris Smith making the team. I'm sure Tyson loved that.

That was more Amare. Remember Tyson left the team for a handful of games late in the year and the reason was never disclosed. He was not fully engaged. The feud with Melo was too strong at that point

LOL you're making this a carmelo thing? you're starting to sound like splat.

if tyson gets disengaged because of his feelings being hurt by melo, then he truly is even more of a pussy than i thought.

Tyson wants to win. He knows what it is like to win AS A TEAM. It's not that his feelings were hurt. Although losing hurts a guy like Tyson more than most and that is what I respect most about him.

Isn't it funny that the Knicks keep having to get rid of players who do really well here because Melo hurt their feelings and the pro-Melo camp calls them soft? Fun pattern.

pro-melo camp? maybe you need to go back into hiding because im definitely not part of a "pro-melo" camp. but yeah, you're right "fun pattern"

I had no problem trading Chandler. However i do have a problem at what Phil got back in the trade. Not only didnt he get a first round pick back but he also took on Calderon's contract. We all know Tyson loves dallas and plays his best there. So we gave Dallas a rejuvinated Tysoin plus we took a bad contract off their hands

Tyson is an NBA Champion. Raise your hand if you think Melo will ever even play in the Finals.

Isnt Fisher a champ also? And Phil? Rambis? If getting guys who understand what it takes to win titles matters why are we cherry picking? Larry Brown won a title too.. lets get him to coach. Oh wait..

At this point Calderon's bad play and injuries are a good thing. I mean the problem with the Knicks has always been they havent stunk enough. Rather than squeeze out 28-32 wins we finally did it right and are in the mix for a franchise player in the draft, and there are a legit 5-6 guys who qualify, and we will have our choice. Then there is FA market where we should have a better selection than Jason Smith.

Move on.

2013 - Tyson wins Defensive Player of the Year, Knicks go 54-28

2015 - Tyson traded, Knicks go 14-58 and counting.

I see a pretty big change there.

You missed a year.

The one where Tyson broke his leg and the team was terrible until Andrea broke his wrist and Tyson, JR and Shump all got healthy? It's been discussed.

If the Knicks don't trade their top three pick for Kevin Love, I'll have some hope. That's the cap room and the draft pick all in one shot for a guy who doesn't fit next to Melo. Yes, there is a smart way to proceed. Heck, there was a smart way to proceed after the 54 win season... and they traded a number one pick for Bargnani and fired the team's architect instead. They could've later traded Felton and Shumpert for Lowry... but decided to hold onto Shump so they could give him away for nothing instead. Not sure what exactly inspires confidence about this team's management. I will hope for the best and that a miracle lands in our laps. But I considered Tyson a miracle landing in our laps, too.

37 wins and obvioulsy not happy a knick. The one where he basically gave up. PHil really did not want him here.
No biggie really. You think his trade value should have been higher. I get it. What is was his market at the time.

We don't know. You know hindsight.

Dallas looks like a hot mess collection of talent with all kinds of personality and drama. Is Ellis sulking cuz Rondo in town?
Looks like a team we'd have in NY, except no champisonship or pedigree of Dirk.

I agree Rondo has hurt that team's chemistry. I thought they had a chance to make a playoffs run before that.

Though I have a hunch Rondo comes here this summer. Melo loves him.

I don't know what went on with Melo, but I have a hunch the culture of enabling Melo and JR didn't help things.

Que sera. What's done is done, but it's why I wouldn't have minded seeing Melo go to Chicago.

Interesting lesson in Perception Is Reality.

I remember being soured on Tyson mostly due to our discussions here. "FluTyson" and the alleged locker room undermining he was a part of. Same thing with Woodson. Now of course it seems all ridiculous because the organization materialized those qualms about Tyson and Woodson into broken contracts and a waste of trade value.

Also interesting comments about coming around to the 3 ball. I agree I enjoy the inside-midrange game I grew up watching, even though I understand the statistical efficiency of the 3 ball.

And then of course there is our darling media racking muck with "What If?" scenarios with every to-be-free-agent and former Knick player/coach that comes into town, because what else is there to write about?

The franchise was very pleased with Tyson but decided to go in a different direction. The choice was Phil's, with Jim backing him 100%. The same goes for Woodson. We're looking toward a brighter future, not backward at the past.

Yes, Dolan has backed every move 100%. Which is probably a good reason not to dwell on the past. It ain't pretty.

yea... hearing Dolan "is onboard" does not inspire confidence around these parts. He's much better at playing rhythm guitar than managing a sports franchise.

Fair enough, Mr. Madison Square Gardener. While regret is mostly useless, if you screw up, it is good to look back honestly so you don't keep doing the same dumb crap. Phil has been good enough about that so far.

End of season interview
Maybe it went like this:

Phil: Nice finish to the year! Great job with this team!
Woodson: Yes, just shook hands with the players to thank them!
Phil: All of them?
Woodson: Yeah? Of course.
Phil: Was Chandler there.
Woodson: Yeah? I said "all of them"!
Phil: did you wash your hands?
Woodson: Sure, whats on your mind?
Phil: You know Im running the Triangle going forward.
Woodson: Yeah, I was gonna show you some Idea's I have.......
Phil: About the triangle?
Woodson: Yeah, like this one (pulls out paper and draws) See in this one I take the ball, Tyson curls around and ......
Phil: Im sorry, did you say Tyson chandler?
Woodson: yeah, He gets the ball and shoots a 12 foot jumper......and then on this play......
Phil: Wait, you say "Shoots a 12 foot jumper"?
Woodson: Yeah. Whats so funny?
Phil: you like him don't you?
Woodson: Yes, I must insist we keep him.
Phil: Your gonna fight me on this?
Woodson: Uh, well, you know.......I dunno?
Phil: You can't.
Woodson: Well If I were knicks coach.....
Phil: We shape clay into a pot, it its the emptyness inside that holds what ever we want.
Woodson: As I was saying, If I was knick coach I'd.........
Phil: Your not.
Woodson: Thats cold.
Phil: The quickest way to failure is to please everyone.
Woodson: I should go, huh?
Phil: The Root of suffering is attachment
Woodson: Im confused!
Phil: Everything you want is on the other side of fear
Woodson: I feel so much love! Thank you!

11 months later:

Woodson: "If I were knicks coach, I would have fought for Chandler".............

Roy Hibbert was the best center in the NBA that season. By far. He had some weird depression issues or something and then this season was lost because of all their injuries (though they're still making the playoffs!) - but the guy is still a beast.

Exactly, typical that people blast him when he's here then worship him when he's gone. If we'd kept him we might have won 10 more games and ended with a poor draft pick.
