Then why did he call his first off-season a failure? That too was on purpose? Why would you add triple the PG salary commitment by replacing Felton with Calderon if all you wanted to do was tank? Why not at least get draft picks for Tyson? The picks are players in the future and wouldn't interfere with tanking. If Phil did this on purpose, he executed it idiotically. Even people who love what he's done like Nixluva have admitted this year's failure was accidental.

True but he sacrificed the future by tying up half of next year's cap space on the remainders of this .200 team.

I agree. Berman does have tidbits though. I miss the guy that went to bleacher report, Jared. Thought he was better than Begley.
He knew he had cap space and his pick so YES he did plan this. He figured he could gamble on the team he put together knowing he had an escape hatch if it didn't work. He didn't panic and sacrifice the future just to save himself the embarrassment of a losing season. He did the right thing and now has the ability to rebuild with a better core.
Phil has done the best he could with the hand he was dealt. There was no specific plan to tank, but there were some moves that had to be made in order to build for a better future. Next year we will begin to see the fruits of his labor in a team with a good mix of tested veterans and promising young players.

I think getting Calderon was purposeful. He clearly could not stay healthy, which may have been predictable, but I certainly wasn't foreseeing injury to Calderon. I saw a 43% 3pt shoot PG that has decent assist numbers that looks pretty ideal for the Triangle. Did it work out? Not yet. I, personally, haven't given up on him though and expect him to be the starting PG next season (no stretch). I think he fits the model of Phil's system, even if he isn't a top 10 point guard. Could that remain a mistake? yeah.

Calderon played 80 games for a 50 win team last year, was the starting PG, good stats all around, good metrics, good floor general, elite shooting from 3, doesnt TO the ball, and we got into the draft (albeit late, but it counts). Im sorry but at the time there was nothing wrong with this trade. It would suck if Jose is shot, but better a bad break with Jose than Melo, or a our draft pick. Injuries happen. You cant plan for them. Look at OKC with Durant. Things change quickly dont they????
Good job by Phil not bending when the chips were down. Very possible this offseason turns lemons into lemonaid.
In the past we would have sent our 2018 pick and the rights to switch this year for Dragic (whom we have to max) for another 15 wins only to hand OK4 to Pho or something idiotic.

Yes, yes! This is it! The worst PG in the league was one of the main reasons we won 54 mofo games! But Calderone who's finished in the top five in assits, top 10 in shooting %, and led the league in 3 pt shooting, had nothing to do with winning and is worse than the worst PG in the league! Yes, this is what I needed to read!

Ray was the worst PG in the league here, not in Dallas. I can't tell you (are even care to look up) what Felton did in Dallas. If you're referring to Calderone, I don't get your point, because fish just told you what he did in Dallas. There are really no takers for an injured PG at $7 mil per year? Wow.

Maybe Phil knew jr and iman were garbage stat was broken down , Tyson was over rated, that team would never contend for a chip ... The only way to build a contender is to create salary space and fingers crossed the number one pick.. The Knicks will be sitting very pretty come the off season
Could that remain a mistake? yeah.
+1
Please, please somebody also tell me Calderone is worse (even hurt) than a healthy Ray Felton. I would love to read all about missing Ray Felton. That's where we are now..Improving on Ray Felton??..Calderon is worse...Ray guided a 54 win team...But Calderon has a career on his own and he never been good...
Yes, yes!
Please, go back and bump the YouTubeRayFelton thread!
We got 2 yoots for a locker room cancerous Mrs. Hibbert who was hurt more often than not, and Ray Felton. Let's all pine away for Tyson Flu Chicken Personal Reasons Mrs. Hibbert Chandler.
Yes, getting some sort of improvement at PG might just be a good place to start when you're cleaning house.
Phil's such a dolt.
Another gem from JRod. Work it, mofo! You is on a roll.
Well done.
