Knicks · I could see Aldridge coming here (page 7)

His entire family is in Texas and all 3 teams have cap space. Also, with the money that he gets paid no state income tax in Texas makes it a much more lucrative place for him to sign.Well, he'd have to choose to either replace Tim Duncan or team up with Dirk, which would be an awkward fit. Houston doesn't have cap room at present.
Knicks will be in the running if he chooses to leave Portland. Again, the FA market is pretty moot until the draft shakes out.
Aldridge is 100% signing with POR until now all of a sudden? This is just another case of a FA using the Knicks rabid pursuit of any top free agent as a way to increase their leverage and bargaining power. Nothing more. If he leaves POR hes going to San Antonio. He wants to compete for a chip coming to NY (for less money) doesn't get him closer to a chip.

He doesnt need the Knicks for leverage, portland will offer a max bigger than what the Knicks can. Thats a guarantee.

What knick player in the last 30 years has made any material momeybfrom endorsements? The guys who get endorsements get them for skill
Texas has 3 50+ win teams, a leading MVP candidate, and many future HOFers but none of them sold as many jerseys as an injured Melo did this year.

1) Aldridge is a max player. His price cannot be driven up.
2) smart money says that max players take a 1&1 contract this year, meaning that the bird right year is worthless.
3) as an aside, if 2 is true, it means that PJax was brilliant by not trading for a pg this trade deadline because they should not be signing long term deals this year anyway.
4) if 3 is true, PJax should be locking up long term deals this off season to the extent they are available and worthwhile.
5) if 4 is true, signing Melo was brilliant.
NY wasnt and isnt required.

Wouldn't you include LA as a market where guys would get more endorsements? Take thos guys out and the list is Durant, LeBron and I guess Curry.

I think you are underrating him. Aldridge is a freak. He has a 7'5 wing span and huge mitts. He commands a double team most of the time, is a good passer and can post up or hit the three. If he is a Knick who do you double on offense? If you have shooter/defenders on the floor with Anthony and Aldridge you are going to give defenses nightmares. However, if you put one of them on the floor with inept shooters and inept offensive players you get what you see sometimes from Melo.

I hate the Blazers offense. It's much too sloppy and often LA ends up in less then optimal scoring situations. The structure of the Triangle would do wonders for him and keep him in his sweet spots. As you mention, with Melo on the floor it will be near impossible to double either of them and not leave someone wide open. It's not so much how a player looks on his current team but how they would fit in our situation with our offense. The Knicks could really make a huge jump with LA and a solid PG and SG. The Draft could really be huge depending on which pick we get. If it's a top 3 pick that sets up a really important FA shopping spree.

We're talking about endorsements right? Why did you just post jersey sales and team merchandise? The Knicks are popular because NY has alot of traffic in population and tourists, it will always be a hot ticket. The point still stands....no player NEEDS NY to improve their endorsements, if you're good those companies will seek you out no matter where you play.
Now lets stick to the actual point.....endorsements.
LeBron James: $42 million (Nike)
Kobe Bryant: $34 million (Nike)
Derrick Rose: $21 million (Adidas)
Kevin Durant: $14 million (Nike)
Dwyane Wade: $12 million (Li Ning)
Carmelo Anthony: $9 million (Jordan/Nike)
Amar’e Stoudemire: $6.5 million (Nike)
Dwight Howard: $6 million (Adidas)
Blake Griffin: $6 million (Jordan/Nike)
Chris Paul: $4 million (Jordan/Nike)
This is what players have made from their endorsements, now here is something that is startling....
New York's finest surprisingly comes in at No.1. Carmelo Anthony said that he was not about the money, but he's picked up 15 sponsors. He's trying to make a splash next to the likes of LeBron and Kobe. Melo has deals with Nike's Jordan Brand, Foot Locker, IWC, Steiner Sports, Mission, Samsung, PowerCoco, Haute Watches, Jeep, SMS Audio, Isotonix, Delta, Degree deodorant, Locker Room and Starwood.
However, Melo is only making $ 9 million in all.
Melo's name is in a lot of places....but he aint making the coin.

9 mil is low if claiming being in NY is where it is. The majority of that came from his Jordan branded shoe which he had PRIOR to NY. I will say Melo has had more investment opportunities, but at the end of the day making the coin is what matters. Speaking of commercials and stuff, you dont really see melo's commercials outside of nY and that hurts his brand as well.
But I get your point and it kinda proves mine....if you're a good player those endorsements are gonna come to you no matter where you reside.

Well I think that's easily enough to outweigh the extra taxes you pay during the 41 home games a year, which is why this whole conversation came up.

His endorsement money is taxed as a resident of NY, so he pays full tax on that, so not really sure if it offsets anything. Melo may get more in total than quite a few, but his take away isnt more due to the taxes, and he's involved in quite alot of investments that are giving small returns. NY isnt exactly helping him.

The only players you have above Melo are current or former league MVPs and champions though. You basically have to win several rings, MVPs, or both outside NYC to get the big endorsements.
The estimates I've seen are that he pays about 1 to 2 mil a year in extra taxes for NY state and NYC. That 1 to 2 mil is then deducted from his federal income taxes, though. I'd definitely think a company like Nike would offer 9 instead of 8 mil if the guy is in NYC instead of Texas or Denver. I think it would make a MUCH bigger difference than that actually. If he didn't plan his shoe deal out to coincide with free agency and is stuck in an earlier deal, that's a side issue. An FA who plans to come to NYC and has a good agent wouldn't let that happen.

The stars are all over the TV in commercials and stuff now, and none of them are in NY. Does Blake, Curry, Chris Paul need NY to be in State farm commercial? No. Lebron doesnt need NY either. Kobe never has. Does Durant make more from Sprint if he plays in NY? No. These player dont need the fantasy of what playing in NY offers. it's a myth. if you're good, endorsements and business opportunities are gonna come your way. Westbrook got his deal from true Religion because he's a "unique style of dress" type player.NY wasnt and isnt required.
Where are the Aldridge, Gssol and Cousins commercials? Some players do need the boost you can get from a big market. Hardly anyone knows those other players. If you were the agent for Aldridge do you think it would help to suddenly gain millions of Knicks fans?

We're talking about endorsements right? Why did you just post jersey sales and team merchandise? The Knicks are popular because NY has alot of traffic in population and tourists, it will always be a hot ticket. The point still stands....no player NEEDS NY to improve their endorsements, if you're good those companies will seek you out no matter where you play. Now lets stick to the actual point.....endorsements.

Make a little more, pay more in taxes, not truly seeing the advantage that NY actually offered, but we do know melo had his shoe deal prior to NY. Speaking of shoe deal...this is a nice looking shoe as a replica for melo....
I think things like family and winning will probably matter more to him. Which would put the Spurs in the lead, to my mind.
