Knicks · OT: Yankees won't pay A-Rod HR bonus (page 2)

I didn't want to lose Cano but I'm glad they didn't match that 10 yr, 240 mil contract
AnswerMan would probably say Just hit the ball. Right now, a-rod's back to hitting like sheehit.
Maybe he should pay the Yankees 6 million for that 4 strikeout, end the game by hitting into a double play, going 0-6 milestone?
We are winning, scoring runs, hitting homers and our bullpen is frankly beyond scary (hoping and praying that it lasts). A-rod is now a boring, overdone side story.
nyk4ever wrote:this thread is completely mislabeled. it's not a hr bonus and never was a bonus. the language in arod's contract clearly stated that if the yankees felt that the milestone was marketable, that arod would be paid 6million for it. it never was a bonus, where if arod hits a number, he automatically gets x amount of dollars. yankees still come off looking silly when arod has been a great a teammate, but clearly they didn't feel like the milestone was marketable enough, or else they would have marketed it. maybe if arod gets close to the babe, they'll decide to market that one.
Well that's Cashman's interpretation. I have not seen the contract. I've just heard conflicting reports. I can't find it now but there was an article with a quote from the person who drafted that part of the contract, and he said he believed the bonus was automatic.
Either way, from what I've heard, the YES network has been advertising this accomplishment. It comes across as negotiating on poor faith if their TV network can market this but the Yankees claim they can't.
If they take personal ego out of it, I think it would be in everyone's interest to just reach some kind of middle ground compromise.

His walks and power #s are excellent. Our record would definitely be worse without him. What do you expect from a guy in his 21st season?
Paul O'neal great "longevity" and rage aruements with Ump's?
Chili Davis new found power streak?
Tino becomes all star in his 30's?
Then you got Pettit, Aroid and Cleamons. Knobloch?
Who else? Posada? Bernie?
If the old stadium is the "House that Ruth built", then the new stadium is "the house that Roids built"!
Lets not get all post "Core four" and "I told you so"........This crap been going on for years!
A-Rod wrote the book on being a dyke. Reggie was an ass, Ruth was "fat", Dimaggio was a wuss, Berra was short, Mantle was an Alcoholic, We had wife swapping, Thurman was arrogant, Doc Ellis, Strawberry, Dwight, etc etc.......
Lots of less than likable Yankees, but they WON!!! So we loved it!

His OPS+ is currently 144 this year. Amazing for a 39 year old player. I anticipate a drop off at some point this season, but he is definitely helping the team to this point. Note that I'm not an Arod fan and did not like the contract at the time that Hank Steinbrenner forced upon the Yankees / Cashman. They did get a WS Championship out of both Arod and CC - but are paying the price now for contracts that were too long/too much money. I agree with your earlier point on Cano. Same thing, too long....too much money....pass. They made a similar mistake with Ellsbury - but aside from that, the older high contract guys will be dwindling as CC, Arod and Tex finally come off the books. McCann's contract is a concern, but I think they overpaid based on his catching abilities / handling of the pitching staff which I am OK with.

Is it cheating if everyone does it and the teacher practically says you can?
Are you implying that the Yankees do deserve that $6 mil? The money either goes to them or A-Rod. It's not like there's a third option where it goes to cancer research charities.
The 6 million already belongs to the Yankees, they aren't gaining the money. They owed money to Arod based on a performance condition and that condition was breached by Arod's own decisions. It is indisputable that his 660 homerun milestone is certainly less marketable now after the scandal than it would have been in the climate when he first signed the contract.

breached is a nice word but a contract breach does not automatically relieve the other person of their responsibilities. I believe this would be considered a minor breach - where the person has still done the performance that they were expected to. Compensation would be less likely than with a major breach, especially if the consequences were not spelled out ("if you use steroids, the $6 mil is voided"). The league already has the specific consequences stated in writing for steroid use though. As far as I understand it, the dispute is only about the marketability language and neither side is claiming that A-Rod actually has a material breach of contract. Any attorneys here can correct me if I'm wrong.

I took a look at this roster and havent invested 5 minutes. The bullpen is obviously very good, but the entire group of position players are about 37 years old and the only young guy cant hit his weight.
Im not anti-Aroid or anything. At least he had the monster post season in 09. That was some Bonds like hitting. The contract was stupid.
And Guns.. I have no problem with them letting Cano walk. Look at his postseason #s. They werent going to pay $25mm for a guy who cant hit in Oct. If anything ruined me it was Elsbury. So they wont pay $25mm to a home grown star who never missed games but they will pay $18mm to a Red Sock who cant stay healthy. Ever. Puke.

Wasn't he just 3 for 57 or something just before his last benching? What do you expect from a guy making $60 million? I know, I know, batting average is a useless stat...
Anyway, all I'm saying if he hits and contributes, great, a nice little side story. If he doesn't, too bad. All the rest of this A-rod contract crap is just that. Either way, the rich get or stay richer.

When we have 4-5 guys in the field (at least) that you can figure being around for 5-8 years Ill check it out. In 5-8 years most of this roster will be glue.
What really kills me is the type of ball they play. They won titles around teams that could pitch, play defense and most importantly put the bat on the ball. In the past the Yanks would always pass on the power guys in favor of high on base % and guys who could put the bat on the ball. Now they are a team that does little but swing and miss and wait for the long ball. Mostly they are just an old and uninteresting group. Even if they get hot their style of play never wins a titles.

Yea Fish 10yrs for Cano is a long contract but I draw the line at homegrown Yankees. Especially those who you know you can plugin in the middle of the infield and he will play all 162 games at a top5-10 player in the game level for at least another 5-6yrs. That's .300, 30 & 100 for 162 games. Now look we have drew & didi up the middle. So what if he slowly declines true final 4yrs of the deal. He is homegrown. Never drastically declined in his late 30s and he is still better than didi on his worst day. AROD is 40 & better than Chase Headley. The thought of another arod like albatross contract scared them but Cano is homegrown and you need him more than ever now that Jeter is retired. No ridiculous milestone bonuses needed for Cano. They offered him more money per they just had to give him 8-9yrs and he would've stayed and we'd be contending in the playoffs. We are too old and injured in the field and the starting 5.
I totally agree. They a have been unwatchable since 2009. Old, haven't hit with runners in scoring position. Home run happy etc.
I hang out with Kevin Kernan of the Post and he agrees the Yankees do not know what they are doing and that not only includes Cashman but the young Steinbrenners as well. Kevin Kernan is the guy who gave me the heads up on Shane Greene. He loved his stuff and felt he had the perfect deemed for New York. He went through a lot and should not even be pitching anymore. Another Cashman duzzy trading Greene for Didi.
