I'm just thinking of all of the teams that lost that key player at the wrong time. In fact I was just reading where John Wall is as good as done for the season, and that just got me thinking.
There should be some sort of handicap(im talking playoffs only) you can give a team if they lose their #1 guy. I don't know what kind of handicap, but something to keep it interesting, and give the team hope. Some of these players work so hard all season, only to see it come crashing down in a split second.
It's a sad situation, I'm sure IF EWING was healthy during the 99 finals, we could have beaten SA.
Placing a handicap really makes no sense, injuries can happen at any given moment. While it's not a good thing to go through, all teams face it at some point. Just gotta play with what you have and if you make it, it's even sweeter.

Hate the injury thing, even when it is another team that my team is playing.
Not sure we would have one with a healthy Ewing, but the Knicks and Ewing deserved the opportunity that year.
Got to wonder about them basketball gods sometimes...
Injuries are part of any sport. The trick is to have a well rounded/deep team and not rely on only one star player to make or break your season. The problem with the NBA is that cap restrictions and rules basically hamstring a team who has a star player go down during the season. In the playoffs all bets are off in any sport. To want a handicap system for professional team sports goes against the basic core of what sports are all about.

In not sure with a healthy Ewing we even get to the finals. We not talking in his prime ewing. True he was playing very well before he broke his wrist, but with Camby we ran our way into the finals.

I don't think it was the yr he broke his wrist, I though it was an achilles injury. Either way camby and LJ were no match for Robinson and Duncan.

I've been rooting for DC all season (it's my son's team). The timing of this injury sucks big time. Without Wall, the Wiz have little chance to win going forward, even if they make it to the ECF.
Timing is a bitch, but you can't try to rebalance with silly rules. It's a crap shoot for all teams.

Clyde stepped dropping 36 and 19 dimes in game 7!! I know Willis got the MVP for the finals but Clyde was THE MAN.
I thought I read that this year set some sort of record for games missed due to injury...which oddly coincides with the impending GH testing (along with LeBron and Melo's sudden weight loss).

I realize like Kurtis Blow said "thats the breaks, thats the breaks" but it's a hard pill to swollow, i mean Scott Brooks essentially got fired because KD got injured.

At the same time Brooks career got extended because of Durant as well. Brooks will get another gig.
NBA coaches are not a long term gig, so if you get 4-5 years, make 20 or so mil and get a better job, its a good career path.
I hear you, and sometimes it works the other way. Knicks make improbable run with Ewing out to the finals and JVG extension kicks in and he gets 2 mil a year (1999 money!) where he was about to get fired!
After two years, he leaves, gets a killer contract in Houston and is set for life. Now he is no. 1 TV analyst.
Is it fair? not always. Larry Brown always understood the star players get tired of the coach and he knew when to move on.
