Knicks · This guy is the best defender in the draft not WCS (page 1)

IF you can get a strong foundation for him to not repeat "smoking dope". Hes a very well spoken young man and he has a world ahead of him if he wants it. He could provide for his family for generations --he really is unique and well-suited for the nBA. Hes bigger and more skilled offensively than Deandre Jordan. This really is a sick draft for big men--the value of having two or three picks is very high. The question with Upshaw is when does risk hit a tolerance level for a pick? If he stayed he would be in the top 7 picks.

This is the kind of move I would try to trade Timmy Hardaway for a late first round pick.

Or think about that David Lee trade with GSW. Draft Express has him slotted at 30 right now... but maybe he moves up via work outs though.

It'd be nice to move Hardaway or think about taking on a contract to have a second pick in this draft.

But everyone in the league knows that first round picks are basically worth ten times their weight in gold right now because it is cost controlled players for the next four-five years when the rest of the salaries are going to be out of control.

Teams like Boston and Philly were very wise to stock pile picks. Teams without picks like NYK and Brooklyn are gonna be in trouble. How nice would it be to have our own second round pick this year? Pick 32 is like a first round pick. Sigh.

BRIGGS, you know I value your opinion greatly; but, there is no way in hell this dude is better then Stein defensively. This kid can only defend one or two positions; all while Stein can cover the entire floor. Is he better offensively? By not much. The drug issues are definitely red flags we don't need in NY

Lets wait and see on that one. I cant help if the guy continues to smoke dope and it cost him atleast 12-20 spots in the draft. But if he is "ok" he will be one of the better rim protectors in the nBA right away. This stuff that WCS will be able to guard guys like John Wall or Chris Paul is so out of this world--I wouldnt listen to it much. The NBA is a different beast.

Hey Jared Jeffries used to check Chris Paul and Rajon Rondo relatively well...

I think WCS is going to be very good. (Would still be shocked if the Knicks took him any higher than 5th)

wow for real, people are seriously saying that? i think people are overrating wcs so vastly. he'll be a nice player but he had the luxury of playing next to a player that hid ALOT of his deficiencies. he'll make for a good center in the nba, but like briggs said, to think he's ever going to guard a guy like john wall or mike conley is absurd. he'll have a robin lopez type career.

I dont see him being drafted before 20-25 but he should be the best defender in the draft. Hes a MUCH better rebounder than Stein and physically hes bigger and longer--so its harder to get into his body like they can with Stein. Also his offensive skills are better than Stein. This is the NBA it will be difficult to send a 7 footer like Stein out there to guard a 3. First off most 3's can go right around him and then it takes balance off the 5 that are out there--you cant play 3 7 footers right?

if this guy has problems with drugs then he wont be drafted high. ill trust NBA executives regarding this kid

in the meantime, this doesnt mean that WCS is a overrated or a bad defender. hes still a lottery pick and has loads of potential.

I'm not a gigantic Stein fan, but heck...seems like you can say the exact same thing about Town and how Stein might have hid some of his deficiencies, especially the foul issue.

yep. in a lot of the Kentucky games I caught early in the season, Stein looked like the FAR superior player to Towns. Towns got a lot better as the season went on, but Stein was very very very good.

A bit OT (sort of) but I look forward to the day when a player is drafted by a team who is in a State where Cannabis is legal. I'd like to see a team try to side with the Federal
government for a player who tests positive for Cannabis (not to be confused with playing high.) I'd like to see the State step back in with "Leave if you don't want to follow our
State's laws". Enough States threaten that and the NBA can't fight it anymore. Interesting to see the Federal governments long standing War on Drugs falling apart. Thank God for the
poor people it has been destroying for years.

These players play with lots of pain and the drugs they are typically given destroy their bodies (in particular liver and kidney's) over time. There is something extremely safe
and affective to relax muscles and recover, not to mention a host of other benefits.

The stumbling block will come if they try to play high as for some it is a definite performance enhancer, for others it puts them to sleep.

Draftnet has him going at 50. Seems like the Knicks could purchase a second rounder in that range.

I am not sure Ny is the place for him but I do think he could be a good player. Players like Upshaw is why I wouldn't take Stein early. I think you can find defensive rim protecting bigs who are reduced to only being PnR rim runners on O
