Knicks · Smart NBA teams in the future will cut player minutes (page 1)
Keep minutes down to 30
Play guys 75 games with rotating games off on B-B.
You can increase minutes in playoffs but in the regular season that is killing players

Well you can also say if SA played their regulars a few more games, they wouldn't meet the Clippers in the 1st round..

You can always say it after.
In the big scope of things they came within a game of the 2 seed, have Timmy at 39 playing big and 5 rings.
They don't win every year.
You can say it, but there is more to say.
Briggs is right. Maybe at this moment the body is not equipped to handle 40min a nite.
I know Oak played 52.8 min a game. how is that? He gave 110% every nite!!!!!

It's not about making a call in hindsight..Its about understanding there is value in winning as many games as possible ..Not only SA but every team..

the playoff format is silly. the division winners mean very little or perhaps nothing. it's you're record not the luck of the draw that should count. this seeding nonsense is somehow connected to expansion.
it should be the top 16 teams regardless of conference, too. that way there will be only two teams who are merely mediocre as opposed to less than mediocre.

Too many playoff teams, more than half qualifying is ridiculous.

it's either 16 or 8. only exponentials of 2 work. i'd rather it be 8. they should shorten the first round to 5 games or even 3 games or abolish it and have it be 8.

go with top 8- then let every other team play in with single game elimination format. So, even a bad team like the Knicks get in, and if they get in and play hot at the end of the year, they could go somewhere.
Those 8 that survive play the top 8 - and let those top 8 pick their own opponents, in the order of best record.
Genius!

with the amount of teams, there are plenty of meaningless games during the regular season... yet another reason why "a win is a win" in the regular season is false.

agreed 100%. the season is BRUTAL over the long run. i even think teams will rest star players 10-15 games a season

Won't be fun watching half the teams in the league tank for the first pick since everyone makes the playoffs anyway..

Here is a solution.
Cut Training camp to only 4 games and mostly practice. Start 1 week later and only go 3 weeks of pre season.
Cut out 7 games during the season to 75(wipe out most of the B-B games)
Go back to rd 1 3/5
While initially everyone will say no because of money the logic in it for the players and the owners is smart. With less wear and tear=less injuries=better product. Taking away just a small % of schedule= the fans will seek out to watch the other games more often.
There is so much money now--the teams can absorb the extra 10 games easily. Id rather have better product with less injuries.

i agree that the first round should be best of 5...or if you want to keep it at best of 7, end series once a team is up 3-0
but this will never happen...owners want to make money and milk every ounce out of players

A LONGER SEASON ( not more games) with more SPACING BETWEEN GAMES is more practical than anything that will cause the league to shrink it's revenue pie and threaten it's massive TV contracts.
now this id sign up for. id even say (in attempt to grow the sports popularity like the NFL), id designate only certain days to play and SHOW CASE them...maybe like monday wed sat...sorry that sounded stupid the moment i typed it...lol
i think teams should play 3 times a week max...no more back to backs. spread the season out...starting oct 1 then april 15...start preseason earlier (mainly for scrubs trying to make the team). have an all star week break (with 2/3s of season done) but also a 1/3s week break. they guys are killing it out there and its def leading to more injuries

NBA used to start its season the first week in October and end by the second week in May. Maybe a longer season. Playoffs have added an extra round since the early 70's. I don't like the 5 game first round. Teams should play games every other nite in the playoffs. This stretching of first two rounds over a month is a joke. This does not impact all teams mind you so its not a league wide problem.
I can't imagine them dialing back the number of games unless the players agree to take a cut in pay.
A big factor I think is the off season conditioning many players have to participate in. You also have younger players in the NBA. If many played 4 years of college they played under 30 games then and travel was less. At 21-22 years old you had mature bodies hitting the NBA better equiped to handle the harder work load. That might be a reason, but not a solution!
Im ok with 7 less games but you talking a nearly 6% cut in all revenue.
Also players on Olympic and world championship teams should be aged capped at 23. While it keeps many big names from playing it also creates a new buzz for the younger players! Spencer Haywood became a star when Elvin Hayes and Bob Lanier did not join Alcinder to the Mexico games in 1968.
In the end it has to be small moves that add up to make a difference.
However, you have to remember that each game missed, generates a lot of money, which allows players to make more money, a reason why MLB players make the money they make and NFL make what they make with more/less games
To make up for the season games, to allow players to continue to make the money they make as well as the owners, maybe cut down regular season games to 12-15 less games while extending the playoffs for like a NBA Wild Card, that the BEST RECORDS of the entire NBA fight for and not just Conference, especially with the way the Westerm teams have been missing the playoffs the past decade or so while the East makes the playoffs with under a 50% season in a weaker conference
Add in 4 teams *which would be 2 series wild card match ups* or 8 teams to play a 3 or 5 *which would be 4 series of wild card match ups*game series that would be the NBA version of the NFL's Wild Card...
We should cut down back to back to back series, and limit back to back games down, and 5 games in 7-8 nights, it is just brutal to the health of and careers of these players for the better of the league and their careers
TripleThreat wrote:I don't think it's about "smart", I think it's about being a bit "lucky"Dallas is "lucky" that Dirk Nowitzski left money on the table, at a historic rate, which left enough money to actually fill out a roster. It didn't pan out as they hoped, but without it, as an aging player, he'd have to play far heavier minutes.

The Spurs could be truly unlucky, Duncan could have squeezed every last dollar he could. Or he could have left. He could have feuded with other players. Been a shotjacker chucker. Said stupid things in the press. Shown a lousy work ethic. Decided he was above things like conditioning and defense. He could have been a criminal and rapist like Kobe. But the Spurs lucked out in that Duncan is a team player and understood how to play within his limitations as he aged.
<..............................................................................>
NBA players can't have it both ways. They have unparalleled job security because of the nature of the height dependency plus athleticism requirements of the league. But on the flip side, it means they have to burn harder because very few people can do what they do.
A LONGER SEASON ( not more games) with more SPACING BETWEEN GAMES is more practical than anything that will cause the league to shrink it's revenue pie and threaten it's massive TV contracts.
I like your argument, but please don't say things that aren't true, will lower your credibility in arguments, like Kobe as a rapist. I never liked Kobe much, but he was never convicted a rapist and quite the contrary, cleared his name and the 'victim' was blamed for defaming him.

WronWron,
16 of the 30 teams already make it. After one round, that drops to 8. Which means after 10 days, 22 teams are resting.
If every team dropped 10 games its 150 less games for the season!!! Whats the profit per game?
Your saying players would be agree to losing 12% of pay? Remember, Playoffs don't make up the difference. Keep winning and it pays your only talking a hand full of teams. Spurs got to share 3.2Mill. Heat shared 2.8mil.
Think A player making 20 mil a year is going to think its cool to give up 2.4mil a season when he can sit out a few games and rest anyway?
Think Tony Wroten would agree to that?
Personally I think there should be greater financial incentives for players but it don't work that way.
