Knicks · Hypothetical Melo deal with the Lakers (page 1)

I know, I know...but hear me out. Internet rumor going around that has Melo going to the Lakers for pick 2 and Julius Randle. Ain't gonna happen. No way. But where there's a little smoke, there could be a fire.

What if we agreed to deal Melo to the Lakers for the following: Julius Randle, Jordan Clarkson, Jabari Brown, pick 27 and pick 34 in this draft (2015) and either a 2017 1st round pick (say top 10 protected or so)--OR--2 future 2nd round picks.

The Lakers keep the pick at 2 and get a chance to team up Melo with Kobe and pick 2 for a "big 3" and make a run at another title (Kobe and Melo would both welcome it; Melo would waive his no-trade clause to go play with his buddy, one of the few teams out there you figure he'd waive his no-trade for), La-La's happy in LA...We already know the Lakers wanted Melo--he visited them in FA. Bottom line -- to get Melo, team him up with Kobe AND keep their pick at 2 -- that should be appealing to them.

For the Knicks, they get a chance to get the hell out from under Melo's ridiculous contract first and foremost, a huge win (I just don't see us winning with this guy unfortunately), we unload a player who's breaking down right in front of our very eyes (how can you not be concerned about this guy's health moving forward if you're a Knick fan? Both shoulders, now the knee.. What's next?? I'm telling ya right now--when his body eventually gives out, we're gonna HATE this guy's unmovable contract more than anything -- it will automatically become one of if not THE WORST contract in the league, mark my words--I mean we've be through this crap before), they re-tool with 3 young NBA-ready players (assuming Randle makes in back 100%--he's been working very hard. If he does--let's be positive and say "when" he does--he could be BIG-TIME. Clarkson and Brown are very solid), 2 additional impact picks in this draft (a very deep draft) to go along with pick 4 and a future 1st rounder in 2017 or 2 future 2nd round picks.

Deal might need some tweaking obviously but you get the idea. Anyone else do this? I would in a heartbeat. Part of me truly believes we need to be patient and really rebuild this team from scratch the right way. I was fully in favor of dealing Melo to the highest bidder during his FA tour. I felt that once he signed his contract and then got hurt last year...POOF...any chance of dealing him for an acceptable package just went up in smoke but maybe there still is a chance. The relationship between Phil and Jeanie Buss is a unique element to the equation that could help facilitate/broker a deal..

Wow. Great stuff. Finest you are one of my favorite posters. Haven't seen that rumor but Melo to the Lakers makes sense. It is a big market and Kobe loves Melo. Getting Randle, Clarkson and picks would be great. I hated the Melo trade but I am a big Melo/Cuse fan. I think you are talking about two teams with aging stars that either need to rebuild or go young. Deal makes sense and I would love if the Knicks did it. Also, I think Melo waves his no trade clause to play with the Mamba and I think this is the year where Melo's deal might be most trade able. He didn't increase his salary and the cap goes way up the following year. Phil needs to go champagne and roses on this deal.

The key to what the Lakers do is Kevin Love- if he is likely to sign with them, they will either draft Russell or maybe be willing to trade OK4 for Melo (or an establish star)

Not happening. Because Dolan views Melo as his guy.

Dolan wants a superstar to keep ticket sales high. But theres a new sheriff in town name Phil Jackson. Any and all LA to NY trade scenarios im sure have been exhausted already. Its up to Phil to see if he has enough pull.....See whos really running this organization. Unloading Melo to LA is a good deal. I just dont see it happening. Whatever move that makes since with this organization never occurs.

I think Dolan could be sold more easily on moving Melo to LA if we took back the ghost of Kobe- he's stupid like that and it would buy our rookies a year to learn the ropes while Kobe's name sells the tickets. Once we've got rid of Melo, most of the better FAs won't want to come here, so we can just use the cap space to absorb contracts for picks (see David Lee and Golden State, or maybe Indiana or Boston). It'll take 3-4 years, but it's the best route at this point- we will have a tonne of cap space with he cap going up and our two best players (hopefully OK4 and Winslow/Mudiay) locked on tiny old rookie contracts.

The problem with such deals to rebuild from scratch is that we have no first round pick 2016..

Yep makes it tough, but if you can get 2 high picks this year, and a 1st next season in exchange for taking on salary, then that makes up for it.

I am not a big fan of Kobe but it would be nice to see him retire as a Laker. Too many greats move around. He has spent his whole career in LA. He should retire a Laker.

He should, but if it means getting OK4 and Randle and allowing us to rebuild properly then that's more important to me

think this is a great idea RG. i actually proposed something similar a few days ago. melo to the lakers for cap fodder (not randle) and the #2 pick. both melo and kobe have gushed over having the opportunity to play with rondo, now all three of them could play together in LA. if we could move melo and speed up our rebuilding process with either the trade that you mentioned getting randle and having our #4 pick or going with the #2 and #4 i think that would be for the best.
dacash @ 5/25/2015 2:59 PM
lets really make it interesting
lakers get melo
sac get the number two pick
knicks get cousins and the 6 pick
Moonangie @ 5/25/2015 4:36 PM
If they get Melo, we get pick #2. Otherwise, nothing doing.

I have proposed this exact deal numerous times in just about every thread. It's a dream, but them things sometimes come true.

I guess "nothing doing" it is because it would be a fool's errand to give up a decade and a half worth of all-star play for whatever couple of seasons Melo has left. Even with Melo, the Lakers are no contender, so trying to "win-now" makes no sense.

Why would those teams want to help the Knicks get back on track with so little incentive for themselves?

my apologies i should have gone deeper, first of i honestly know squat about trading but since ppl were throwing about ideas that was mine.
no i realize that other players draft [pics etc would have to be involved but my idea is basic for everyone.
lakers get melo to play along side kobe and prolly rondo who they will go after and is said to want to be there.
sac gets rid of cousins who is said to be a head case and butts with karl, with the second pick the receive from the lakers they can get either towns or okafor. may be teams would have throw in extra like randle and or timmy jr .

the knicks get rid of melo, get a nice young scenterpiece in cousins who change of scenery might help him.
i cant see why this isnt a win for all three teams of course the knicks get two pick thier fouth and sacs sixth( ima biased dreamer sorry)
