Gentry was in New Orleans on Friday night for a second interview that concluded on Saturday morning with a meeting with Pelicans owner Tom Benson, a source said. Gentry is scheduled to fly back to Bay Area on Saturday night. Warriors coach Steve Kerr gave Gentry his blessing to go to New Orleans despite the fact that he was missing Golden State practices in the process. Gentry had been worried about being a distraction as the Warriors prepare for Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday.

Gentry, 60, has a 335-370 record in 12 seasons as a head coach with the Miami Heat, Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Clippers and Phoenix Suns and has worked as an assistant head coach the Clippers last season before joining the Warriors. The offensive-minded coach will begin working for the Pelicans after the NBA Finals. Gentry will replace former Pelicans coach Monty Williams, who was fired after leading the franchise to 45 wins and the playoffs.

ESPN.com first reported Gentry's imminent hiring.

Wonder if Chicago was interested in him. Good pickup by New Orleans; I liked Gentry when he was with Phoenix and think he's a solid coach.

Thibs as an ast. collecting a check with one eye on Fisher is looking more and more like a chance.

Honestly, I doubt it but I am raiding his staff.

Had not known his resume. Worked under Loughery, Larry Brown, Pops, MDA...

Is he the offensive guru on the Warriors, or is that Curry's job?

Gentry got big props when the Terry Porter era in PHX came to a grind and he put back in the MDA system for the most part.

Looks like Brian Shaw might work under Kerr in GS.

Kerr is no fool. He knows Gentry has all that offensive knowledge from Pop and MDA. He was the perfect guy to bring in with a guard oriented offense. A Hybrid offense is exactly what that team needed to Maximize the talent they have. Gentry wasn't there by his side just for looks. They came up with the perfect system for that team.
