He's not a good shooter that is for sure. Hes got a long way with that jumpshot--which takes a lot of time to get off and I like that word "clunky" I heard today. He was making sure to step in past the 3 point line and was just not on--seemed to labor was not spry in his movements. I don't think hes the athlete that a John Wall is and with a jumper that is going to take time--I just dont see the necessity for this player at 4 in ANYWAY.
wargames@ 6/8/2015 3:09 AM
I said this somewhere else but looking at Mudiay he might of really benefited from going to a college team and staying until his sophomore or junior year to get that shot mastered before going pro. I kind of agree idk how he is rated #4 on most boards except the fact he was better than other players in High School before those players spent time with college trainers and coaches.

Boy this is a disaster of we take him. Some of those Chinese games he was very porous in and that was the worst draft video I have seen by far for whatever that is worth I guess? Right now hes going off HS results and hype from Larry brown. Youre right he easily could be on the Turner Oubre Looney as in Im not nearly ready to compete in the NBA for the next two years mode. Does that jumpshot look like hes ready to help us win in the next two years? Wait what happens when there is a defender in front of him? And not just the shot--his movements are slow--hes not jump hes not energetic--he needs to develop. Hes more of an 8-13 pick to be honest.
Look at his jumpshots too-those are not even 3's those were long 2's.

Yeah those misses without even being guarded or moving at game speed were a red flag in general and a major red flag for a player in the triangle. Then add in potential chemistry issues between his style of play and what the knicks plan to do and I can't see him being picked at #4.
Can he thrive in the half court where athleticism isn't the most important factor? Can he play off the ball besides Melo? If the knicks get a premiere scorer in FA would he be happy in the role of a distributor first and scorer second?
All those red flags and questions are the makings of a disappointing pick at #4. If the knicks had 8-16 I would say sure go for upside but at #4 the knicks should look for someone who can contribute now and has upside.

Wow, that was bad
Vmart@ 6/8/2015 8:32 AM
I would take Mudiay with the fourth pick. What I saw is easily correctable with reps that jump shot will look ten times better once the season begins. You guys are looking for contributors the Knicks have been making contributors they are all over the NBA. You want Mudiay to be great 19 years old room for improvement. What did you see from that video did you see his passing prowess or his ability to drive to the basket. You didn't even see his handle.
These are real drills for a team not the cut and paste variety that Russell and Towns and WCS put. It's not a video of a hot hand. Phil will know what he wants after the workouts.
knicks1248@ 6/8/2015 8:43 AM
I couldn't even watch the full video after missing his first 5 out of 6 jumpers. His shot release is begging to get swatted from here to china, it's 2 slow for the NBA, it's almost like he was taking Ft's. This kid can not start in the NBA right away, but the bigger question is, If he's mock at #4, what does that say about the rest of the draft

Right, I agree. Glass half full for me -- what you see here is a kid's 1st workout, so you know nerves had to have played a part. Is he Reggie Miller shooting the ball? No, but he could be decent and get a whole lot better with practice as you said. I look at Iman Shumpert coming outta school -- not a good long range shooter at all but worked on it (his form was good to begin with) and it's one of the better (if not the best) parts of his game now in fact. Shump got better real quick too -- wasn't something that took years. I see the same path with this kid. Marcus Smart's another comparison to make (and not just with the jumper -- he's got more Marcus Smart in him than John Wall -- I think he'll be better than Smart) -- Smart got a lot better from long range last year for the Celts, esp. during the latter part of the season. Mudiay's form gets criticized a lot but it looks decent to me--not broken at all like some say...And if you notice, the release got a lot quicker in the segment where he put it on the floor for a dribble or two first before shooting. He'll be able to get his shot off, not worried about that at all... And yeah, we didn't get a chance to see any of his strengths at all -- Mudiay came out of this speaking confidently, so that tells me that the other parts of the workout that we didn't see, he performed well. And I like how he spoke -- sounds like a man who actually did go through an accelerated maturation process in China like he discussed, not some scared kid. Maybe China was a good experience for him after all. Not saying he's definitely our guy but if we took him at 4, I wouldn't be too upset. He'd be a real nice upgrade for our backcourt. Mudiay to the Lakers at 2 is a different story. That would surprise me...
crzymdups@ 6/8/2015 9:56 AM
Man, compare that dude's jumper to WCS and tell me again Stein can't shoot.
I guess we know the Lakers aren't taking this kid.
I agree with those saying Mudiay set himself back a few years by not going to college.
FistOfOakley@ 6/8/2015 10:20 AM
mudiay is being projected in the top 4 based solely off of his projections from last year.... everyone thought highly of him.. he didn't totally wet the bed in china... he just looks like a prototype pg..
but looking like a prototype pg and actually being one are completely different...
JesseDark@ 6/8/2015 10:20 AM
What I found interesting is that at the end of the interview is that he said he loves pick n roll situations. This may be a "tell" that the triangle may not be the best for him.

That was the worst draft video Ive ever seen. I wish I saw differently. I don't know how in the world this could be a glass half full. I think it is clear he is in need of a LOT of developmental time. Those were not even 3's those were to steps in with no none on him and he was WAY off on many shots. Im old and I can still shoot reasonable close to that. I can make 4 out of 10 18 footers.
Knixkik@ 6/8/2015 10:24 AM
I would be interested to see how his pre-draft shooting workouts compared to Westbrook, Wall, and D Rose. He's not a terrible shooter, he has solid form. He will need to speed up his shot and follow thru more. But i didn't think the mechanics were bad. He shot the ball exactly how i expected. He is still an elite prospect with high potential.
knicks1248@ 6/8/2015 10:29 AM
This is the type of kid you draft when you have a veteran on board already, he's obviously going to need a yr or 2 (like THJ) to adjust. The knicks need impact players now, we are in no position to draft a guy who's not NBA ready, especially with a young coach like fisher, and a half empty roster.

Good form? That delivery is slow and long

Fascinating thing will be to see what the Sixers will do if the Lakers take D'Angelo Russell. Do the Sixers take Okafor and sell him to the highest bidder? Do they take Porzingis and stash him for a year? I can't see the Sixers taking Mudiay...
I could see Mudiay dropping pretty far - maybe end of the lotto. I bet by the end of the week you will hear Mudiay is going to take workouts with mid lottery teams. He's in severe danger of dropping like a stone if he doesn't work out for enough teams. He can't just workout for the top four teams with what he's showing.

Sooooooo nothing new then just what we already knew about him. You guys do realize that he's only had 11 games in China and his high school days to get better while all these other kids had at least one full season in college to work on their games which is a huge difference??? To act like this kid isn't gonna be a good player with the minimal amount of time he's had to make his game better is ridiculous. I'm on the WCS, Winslow, Russell, Porzingis train anyway but I'm not gonna judge a 19 year old kid off of the little experience he's had so far that's for sure.

We need to workout more guys like Hezonga Kaminsky demand a workout with Porzinigis--w e need to be open and thorough. Evene guys down the latter like Wood Jerian Grant Mickey if we see value in moving back to 16 if Boston showers us. To me the MOST important aspect is getting the most value I can for #4 You know I like using the draft to get better--I just dont love #4 its not a great pick for the Knicks--but for other teams it might be a gold mine--in fact I know it is.

I'm glad they're working out Cameron Payne. I hope they do work out everyone.
Personally, my preference would be to just take Stein or Winslow and call it a day, but if they can get a package of picks and still get a prospect like Cameron Payne or Jerian Grant, I'd be okay with that.

He's not playing at full speed during that workout. I have seen much, much worse. His shot is not broken by any means. He has a high release too. He just doesn't follow through enough.
