This is probably a Lakers power play to get something out of Philly. They know Philly has picks and needs Russell. That would be a smart move to try and get a deal with Philly.

It would be smart.

I could really believe this IF Russell eventually works out for Philly.

Would Philly be sure enough about trading with the Lakers without a workout, or do you think they are already sold on him and actually don't need to see him?

I think Philly already knows all they need to know about Russell. He's no mystery. Mudiay was the hard one to judge but Russell was pretty clear. After positive reports on Russell's workouts it just sealed the deal. It just would seem to me a smart option for getting max value out of the 2 spot. Lakers need a lot of talent too.

Is it because the trade with the Lakers -- #2 for Carmelo Anthony is a done deal and they don't want it to get blown up before the draft? *crosses fingers*

The writer, like some of us (me included, I'm not immune to sounding certain)seems to imply that he has some special knowledge about who will be drafted 1-3.

Porzingis is more of a Stretch 4 at this point and might be a better fit for them if they go big for the 3rd time in a row, and everyone seems to know that Hinkie really likes Porzingis, except the American-biased guys around here.

Or Philly realizes some team might outthink itself and trade up a few spots for a player the 76ers don't want anyway. All it takes are a few easy press releases to say a couple of player ranked outside the consensus top three interest them.

If the 76ers don't like Okafor, for whatever reason, they can still easily draft him, trade him to a team a few slots back, get an impact player they want, and pile up even more assets for the future like draft picks or young players already on someone's roster.

Philly can take Okafor because they like him. Or if they don't, they can take him because he opens up all kinds of variable trade options for them. What they will not likely do is let a guy who was not so long ago contending for the first overall pick slip past them and reach for a Euro stash when they could possibly take Okafor, trade him, get the Euro stash guy anyway plus something else.

It's not like having a lottery grade ( and top of the lottery grade at that) rookie cost controlled pivot will be hard to trade if the 76ers want him off the roster.

As a Knicks fan, I do wish a top 3 guy would fall to the Knicks, that would be a boon for the franchise and a wild stroke of luck for a team desperately needing it.

As a NBA fan, sorry guys, it's just not likely to happen. Some of you guysm looking for a top 3 prospect to fall to 4, sound like spouses of alcoholics, trying to convince yourself that Person X will suddenly stop drinking and change their life. It's not optimism, it's blind rationalization in the face of overwhelming odds.

so if a top three guy falls to 4th, then he not a top 3 guy no more!

I believe out of the first 4 projected top picks, one will be a bust, who's going to be the unlucky team because it always happens.

I know there is no way you could have told me Oden was going to be a bust, and that durant was going to be as good as he is.

You look back at the top 5 in the draft and it is scary how many busts there have been- Bennett, Thabeet, Beasley, Williams, etc.

I don't consider Oden a true bust because of injury, but for what he's done in the league so far, he was surely a bust for the team who took him.

Trailblazers- Bowe over Jordan, Oden over Durant...True franchise and league altering horrible mistakes.

Lol we hang on every new report. Just a few days ago the Lakers were all in with Okafor and today it was Russell has a promise.

So he is going to reschedule it then? Personally I wonder was Russell told Porzingis was the workout today since he is working out for all teams today and asked to reschedule.

Knicks1969 @ 6/13/2015 12:28 AM
I still predict that Phil will coerce his woman to select Russell with the second pick to force Philly to make a choice different then picking up Russell; they will then turn around and trade him to the Knicks.

Have just seen his name recently and read a column or two. http://www.philly.com/philly/columnists/...

Arguably the best source for stuff about Philly BB.

he majority of mock drafts (including ours) are in agreement in projecting the top three picks.

The order in which these players are selected may not be set, but the expectation is that Karl-Anthony Towns, Jahlil Okafor and D’Angelo Russell will be the first three players taken (in some order) by the Timberwolves, Lakers and Sixers.

It has been speculated that scenarios may unfold which would allow one of these players to fall to the Knicks, who are sitting behind Philadelphia with the fourth overall selection. It would have to involve Russell sliding into one of those top two slots, and the Sixers then theoretically passing on Towns or Okafor due to already being loaded with frontcourt talent.

The latest report, however, says that even if the top three picks don’t go down as expected, the Sixers are locked in to taking one of those three players.

Marc Berman of the New York Post:

According to a league source, the Sixers, who pick third, still have a firm Big 3 of Karl-Anthony Towns, Russell and Okafor and won’t let any of the trio slip to Phil Jackson. Despite their young, marquee depth up front, the Sixers would take Okafor even if it’s to collect an asset to trade later.

Speculation that Russell is trying to avoid being picked by the moribund Sixers escalated when he canceled workouts with them this weekend. There also were rumblings that perhaps the Lakers, after working Russell out, had given the Ohio State combo guard a guarantee at No. 2. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported he was just “real sick’’ and a Sixers workout could be rescheduled. Russell has told reporters he also has agreed to work out for the Knicks.

There are, of course, other ways that the Knicks could land one of these three players.

Kristaps Porzingis is beginning to be a name mentioned as possibly going top-three now, and Emmanuel Mudiay is at least a threat to potentially rise into that group, as well.

But if things go as planned, New York will have to turn its attention somewhere else.

Does it make sense to draft a player who clearly doesnt want to play for your club just to spite the team that picks next..This why the sixers will remain lottery bound for the forseeable future

It usually blows up in the face of the team that does that, because a) other teams know they have to trade them, and b) the team usually leaves it too long, and the resulting logjam diminishes every players value

smackeddog @ 6/15/2015 3:08 PM
Speaking of conspiracy theories- the fact Cameron Payne has pulled out of his workout with us, makes me wonder if we have agreed to trade down with Denver in exchange for Ty Lawson, otherwise it doesn't really make sense.
crzymdups @ 6/15/2015 3:34 PM
This makes me think that Okafor is going to the Lakers and Russell might just be trying to avoid the Sixers.
