Knicks · Winslow: I'd be "great fit" with Knicks.. (page 2)

Kind of a new term. Sounds like something agents talk to them about.
Walt Frazier and Pearl Monroe can be said to have a brand in their style of play, and in Clyde's instance, the way he dressed, but I'm not sure they talked about that kind of thing as openly as they do today. This is bordering on stupid. Building your brand is an extremely common phrase that reverts to building how everyone around you perceives you. There is no need to associate that with a money grab or anything to do with endorsements. Not saying he doesn't or shouldn't seek them just that let's not jump up and down to oceanside every word and attach or own fictional meaning to them.
Could it mean everyone wants to play in a big market? Before the internet and the shrinking of the world, didnt most athletes want to play or get traded to a big market city? Why was that?

It is the world's greatest sports market and he wants to build his personal brand in it. Maybe he wants to be remembered as a legendary basketball player that helped the Knicks turn around 15 years of dysfunction.

What's stupid is your attitude, and the fact that I said the exact same thing in the first two sentences I wrote, bro.
I will admit that I was stupid when commenting on Frazier, even though it coincides with what you said.
And branding almost always ends up being linked to endorsements, or are you that obtuse or ignorant in your perception of how things work?
In my stupidity, I will then say once more that this is not the kind of stuff I want to here coming from guys who have not even worn an NBA uniform yet.
I will also say, stupidly, of course, that like me, Phil Jackson is a stupid man, since he referred to this in the times interview he did the other day:
JACKSON: We’re trying to find players who are the best fit for us. We’re really chasing as much information as we can. We’re not interested in guys who are just interested in the money and in their branding. They have to have a little more to their life than just those selfish desires. There’s nothing wrong with chasing money, and there’s nothing wrong with making the most from your name. But that seems to be the running theme that you see a lot these days.

I will stupidly say that this is something he should have said, but sadly, did not.

I like Winslow. I am not sure if he should be the fourth pick in the draft but I think he is a bit less of a risk then some players that might get taken there. I think he made a mistake saying what he did. He is young but Phil has said he wants mature players and also look at Walt's quote from Phil.

What was Walts quote? I missed it...

Yes you will. That doesn't make it wrong for him to use a common phrase.

From PJax,
We’re not interested in guys who are just interested in the money and in their branding. They have to have a little more to their life than just those selfish desires. Not wrong…just stupid.
This is what he could have said:
it’s a place I’ve become really comfortable with," Winslow said. "It’s a fun city, the market’s people and its culture are great. I hope to be remembered as a legendary basketball player player who did anything he could that helped to help the Knicks turn around 15 years of dysfunction. It would allow my brand to be great if I could be one of the players who helped rebuild and explode and if I were to land here this franchise. I would be extremely excited to be here and I think we would the Knicks could have have a bright future.”
meloshouldgo wrote:Yeah that Pjax quote is really consistent with him giving a $125MM contract to a one dimensional ball hog who only came for the money. Because that's not stupid at all.
This is something I stupidly agree with you about.

Regradless of what was said in a Newspaper, i see the heart and commitment he plays with. By that logic, most of this generations athletes has a red flag. Nothing to see here.agree
Fair criticism…I'll admit that I'm old school, but I've been hearing some great interviews with prospects, and I heard Jay Bilas talk about the character of the kids in this draft. Heard Towns, OK4, Russell, Porzingis, and many others speak or be interviewed, and this seems like one of the best groups I can remember. Hell, I wanted to adopt Towns as I was listening to him.
I've called Winslow a winner many times, and would understand why Phil might take him, but this is not the type of stuff I want to hear from young players. The branding will come with accomplishments on the floor- You know everyone will love this kid if he shows the kind of stuff he showed at Duke. The guy's a warrior and I would love to see him going up against James on D.
No need to say this stuff before you've even stepped on the floor, and the fact that he says this crap means he might be listening to his agent too much…already.
Ehhh...it was just one interview, one 5 second statement. I just watched Winslows interview with Francesca on WFAN. Sounded very personable. Im sure the interview is up on wfan site. Not one time did he mention his brand.
He is still my guy but it's a little troubling..Maybe he has no clue about this media juggernaut...
Krzyzewski has stayed in constant contact with his players since they left campus, mostly via text message. Just recently he spied a photo of Winslow on social media wearing a crown. Krzyzewski said he asked him what it was for and Winslow kiddingly texted back, "Very deserving.""I reminded him not yet," Krzyzewski said. "And he immediately texted back, 'Yes sir.'"

Hopefully its just a matter of maturity.
Good to see his coach watching out for him. I know he talked about him glowingly on the radio today.

I think the language had evolved and left you behind. I think that's what he did say or something close to it. He just didn't elaborate on the context. Maybe your interpretation is right. Maybe mine is. But to just jump to a conclusion without considering any alternate possibilities and acting like it's the only possible thing he could have meant isn't very open minded.

The fact that Winslow acknowledged that it was "too soon" to be acting like he's arrived is a plus.

Cavs got to the Finals because of defense..ATL got manhandled because you can't always count on sharp shooters in the playoffs..Curry wasn't the MVP..It was Iggy's defense on LeBron..

wait until the draft WCS and you got to hope that he "maybe" has an offense based on workout videos lol
