West to the Knicks might just be his agent talking to get his value up. Unless we are planning on playing Porzingis at the 5 spot and west at the 4

Porzingis will be playing meaningful minutes in two years and he'll give us around 20 minutes next year. Why is it so hard for people to understand that just like Phil said from the beginning.......this team will be built in free agency?? I think a lineup of:
J.Calderon/J.Grant
Gallo/Free agent
Melo
D.West
G.Monroe gets us in the playoffs next year and that's the best we can ask for with a team that's doing a complete rebuild except for one player in Melo. He's gonna have a completely new team around him next year and no matter who the players are around him people better be ready for a slow start cause it's gonna take time for whoever this team is to learn to play with each other. Please stop thinking this is a one year rebuild and do what I'm doing which is giving Phil two years to rebuild this team.

Don't the Knicks have 26 mil in cap space. Pretty sure a bunch of other teams picked guys that aren't ready yet tonight but will be active in free agency. The only guy in the draft definitely ready to help now was Okafor. I have never heard speculation that guys won't sign with a team because they drafted a 19 year old. Also, Zwerling reported West wanted to play for the Knicks. Maybe it is based on Melo, Phil, Fish or cap space despite the presence of a teen on the roster.
Why would we want to spend over 12mm per on a 35 year old player not named Duncan where we are? Id rather have David Lee and his one year contract if this is the case. Id ask GS for 2 first rd picks.
Yeah know those kind of creative deals can only be accomplished through keeping cap flexibility. I'm very nervous we are going to waste our cap space on long term players that aren't worth it. I'm not a fan of Monroe but most Knick fans seem to be thrilled if thats our off season acquisition.

Would make sense actually that if the kid won't be ready for 3-4 yrs to sign a veteran stop gap player to help groom him. West also has leadership qualities and is a solid fit for the Tri.
West would be a great signing for the Knicks at that right price, but a multi year deal approaching 10-13 per is ludicrous speed.

Yeah David West. I think two years of D.West isn't a bad signing. The guy brings a toughness we haven't had since Oak and he still hits the 15 footer consistently and rebounds good but his toughness and the veteran leadership he brings will help big time. I obviously realize his age but the game he plays I think he can bring for two more years. I'm either way on him if we get him or not but you just can't argue with what he can bring to a team with rebounding, hitting a consistent 12-15 footer, toughness and veteran leadership on the court and in the locker room.
No West Please, he is too damn old and is going to cost too much

Completely agree. This seems to be the plan. West will groom Porzingis. I wouldn't be surprised if Grant starts at the 2 next year as well.

West would start at the 4 and Porzingis would back him up. Think 28 mpg for West and 20 mpg for Porzingis. As West ages and sees less minutes, Porzingis will increase. It makes sense. And i'm sure Porzigis will slide over to the 5 from time to time as well, since West will guard the primary post player.
David West provides a major missing ingredient to this team - Leadership. It will come at a high cost, but is actually a player who could play defense and be a sort of captain on D and get guys like Monroe and Melo to play better. He's not athletic enough to cover for their mistakes, but maybe that's where KP comes in for 20 minutes a night.
I think the Knicks are trying to play it both ways a little - develop some quality young guys and also contend with FA to keep Melo happy.
I don't mind trying to bring in Monroe and West. We already have Calderon here and we can't get any of the young guys in FA because RFA makes it so hard now.
If they offer West a 1 and 1 contract for $12M and an opt out after one... I think I'd be okay with it.
I'd be happy with adding him
TPercy wrote:No West Please, he is too damn old and is going to cost too much
I really think he is getting something like two years for $15 mil total

no way! he is getting at least 10 x 2 (or even 3)

Holfresh, post that nonsense in your other thread. Don't go on a hunting spree trying to inject your negativity into EVERY effing discussion.
Zinger is not 3-4 years away from contributing. More like 1 year. Dude has legit skills now and just needs to bulk up some.

Minny is rebuilding Crush, so Towns is perfect..Sixers are rebuilding..What's our plan??..I don't know just like u don't know..Phil will amend it three more times before the season..
The plan is simple. Draft for later. Use FA to build the team that is gonna win now.
A 17 win team that dedicates half its resources to winning now is not going to win anything meaningful now. I'm hoping we trade Melo, get rid of Calderon, and fully rebuild.
I like what Phil did a lot last night if you look at it in a vacuum. But I agree with Holfresh that the larger picture is currently incoherent.
We don't see the entire picture. FA has not happened yet. Melo may want to be traded. We have no information other than knowing who got drafted. No plan you say? Doubt that. We just aren't privvy to it.
I like West but not at big dollars. Knicks can't blow all their $26m cap. Maybe a 2-3 year deal at modest money to provide toughness and leadership. Maybe they could talk Monroe and West into taking less money but I doubt it. If forced to pony up more $$4 - I would take Monroe over West given the 10-year age difference. Monroe has size and intelligence and over time, they can develop more athletic bigs to compliment him.

I don't disagree. That's why I said currently. The plan may or may not look coherent at a later date. We can only comment on everything up to the present.

I'm not liking the defense with this group. I would've loved to get Powell at 35 we desperately need athletic upgrades and this kid is a beast on the d. I donh like the defensive mobility of Monroe west and melo especially with the worst defender in the league Calderon Were not paying attention to d here
