Knicks · Room Exception - $2.8M per yr - do we use it / who do we target? (page 1)
crzymdups@ 7/5/2015 10:53 AM
Okay, Phil has one bullet let in the chamber before it's all minimum deals.
Do we use the room or keep the cap cleaner for next season?
Right now, we got:
Calderon / Grant Afflalo / Galloway Melo / Early / Thanasis Porzingis (I actually think Amundson may be the default starter early in the season) / Williams RLopez / Kyle O'Quinn
We have the room exception left - $2.8M - I have a feeling they'll go after a guy like Caron Butler or Dorrell Wright - someone who can back up Melo at the 3, possibly play next to Melo and be a 3 and D guy. I hate to say it, but I don't trust Early or Thanasis quite yet.
I actually like the looks of that second unit - O'Quinn is actually a fantastic passer from the high post and the best thing Williams does is back door cuts under the hoop. Ko'Q can actually cover for some of Williams' terribleness on D. You get the baby backcourt of Grant and Gallo who will be pretty damn lock down. I think they just need a vet-ish 3 who can defend and hit the three and lead the babies. Also, the bench unit sounds like a bunch of James Joyce characters.
I think it's rushing Zinger to start him, but I can't fathom starting Derrick Williams.
I have a feeling Lou Amundson may actually wind up starting again in stretches.
I would like to bring back Amundson and maybe Cole and maybe Shved. Maybe we just sign Lance Thomas and that's that.
CrushAlot@ 7/5/2015 10:57 AM
I really like Butler. I think he would be a great vet to have on the team/in the locker room and he can still contribute on the court. I saw something that said he wants to go to one of the LA teams.

I think we use it in house to keep either Jason Smith, Cole or Shved

I think that may be what they do.
They can actually split it over two players - maybe they try to split it between Shved and Cole?
I think Jason Smith may be too expensive and I was never a huge fan of his. I think Kyle O'Quinn makes Jason Smith somewhat unnecessary.

I can see J.Smith or Bargnani starting at the 4 spot next year if we bring one of or both back. They both have that great 15-18 foot jump shot and their offense next to Rolo's defense could work well. I know i don't have many of you that agree with bringing either of them back but i don't think they get the credit they deserve for what they can bring to the team. Please bring Shved back to.

A Calderon trade sure would be nice right about now. Even using the stretch provision could help. I'm one of the few that don't mind Calderon and think he's gonna be much better then he was last year but with the way this team is shaping out i could go either way with him but that 7.5 million would be very much helpful right about now.

I agree. I think Calderon bounces back if his Achilles is healed. But it also would be nice to keep Shved and Cole. I don't really want Jason Smith back.

I wasn't a fan of Jason Smith either- when we got him, I was under the mistaken impression he was a good defender. He had that short stretch where he came alive after we traded Shump and JR, but faded again.

I think you have to rebuild Calderon's value first. Also he's a great three point shooter and we don't have a ton of those.
I'm willing to be more wait and see with Calderon. Hopefully he spent some time studying the Triangle and can be better this year.
nixluva@ 7/5/2015 11:16 AM
I think Shved might actually be a consideration. Caron Butler is rather limited at this point. I think Phil will go with bringing back guys who did well last year and can help speed up the process of teaching the new guys how this works.
I actually see KP and Jerian having big roles this year. Both are talented but highly skilled and that's a huge part of being able to function at the NBA level. They'll be surrounded by vets that can help them.

There's not really any FA I'm desperate to sign right now. I would have liked to have traded him for Taj Gibson or J Thompson, but now Beverley is no longer available and we have O'Quinn, that wouldn't really make sense.
I say keep Calderon until midseason- by then he is much more tradeable (just one full season left, hopefully he will have been playing better too, nice piece for a team making a playoff push) and we'll have a better read of Grant and Galloway, to see if they are up to the job of starting

Hate to say it..but you might be right. It seemed like the only scorers last year besides Melo were Bags, Smith and Shved. Specially second half. I know the triangle is suppose to have everyone score but Aflalo does not seem to be enough to take load off Melo. With all defensive signings, maybe Bags, Shved or Even Smith are less of a liability. Specially with the right match ups.
NYKBocker@ 7/5/2015 11:41 AM
Jeremy Lin. . Honestly, we need a PG that can get to the rim. Lin or Shved would be ideal.

It sounds like Lin is headed to Dallas. I hope they bring Shved back.
WaltLongmire@ 7/5/2015 11:47 AM
Thought I read that Smith was in early talks with another team. Remember that he was coming off a leg injury last year…I expect that he'll be better this year.
Wonder if Shved has had any offers, and whether he might go back overseas, since it would seem he is not going to get much more than the vets minimum.
I figure that Cole, Thomas and Amundson will be back at the end of the bench on minimum contracts.
Have no idea where Ledo is on the pecking order, and is Acy still alive?
I think that Thanasis is fighting for his life at this point, just not sure if he will fit in with the Knicks if his offensive issues from the outside have not been addressed by him in the off-season.
TPercy@ 7/5/2015 11:56 AM
Chart: Grant Afflalo Melo Porzingis Lopez
Caledron Nobody Thanasis Derrick Wiliams Kyle O Quinn
Galloway Ledo Early Nobody Nobody We need to get Shved/Kj Mcdaniels then I would get Kendrick Perkins on vet min, then see how good Labeyrie in Summer League before making a decision on rserve PF.
crzymdups@ 7/5/2015 11:56 AM
Yeah I think Amundson, Cole and Lance will be back on minimum deals.
That leaves one final spot. I'd assume it's Shved getting the room? Or maybe they try to split the room between Jason Smith and Shved and let Cole go.
Berman reported that Phil is trying to bring back Lou and Lance on minimum deals. I did hear the Spurs and one other team were interested in Lance.
I don't know what to think about Thanasis. Love his energy but his game seems raw. I don't think fans would be as interested in him if it weren't for his brother.

We have 3 spots left. Lance makes no sense because we already have 3 SFs unless we don't plan to get another SG. Quite frankly I don't want Lance back, I would rather get someone with leadership qualities like Caron Butler. Phil shouldn't be in any rush to sign a reserve pf. What if Labeyrie shows out in summer league? Stupid move.
crzymdups@ 7/5/2015 12:03 PM
I'm guessing the debate will be between bringing back Shved for the room or bringing in a three and D small forward who has a little more experience.
I also don't get guys assuming Grant is gonna walk in and start over Calderon. I love Grant and I'm thrilled he's a Knick but I think Calderon is definitely the starter. I would split their time pretty evenly but I think we need Calderon as a starter and leader. His shooting is also hugely important.
TPercy@ 7/5/2015 12:06 PM
Thanasis is ready. He plays good defense and is really good at getting to the rim. Plus Phil has already said he intends on signing him. Thanasis over Lance Thomas anyday.
