Hasn't show the fire and desire in his young career and don't think it starts now. At $5m, sure it could've been spent elsewhere, but with the cap exploding, $5m will be like $2 mill next year.

If he does magically pan out, we'll get lots of dunks of the night!

Phil apparently has to do this each year...Lamar Odom....Derrick Williams...

I'm hoping this works out better, mainly because this guy isn't an iso type player. He moves. If he actually plays some decent D, we have a find.

Besides the risk/reward dice roll, you're absolutely right jrodmc.

DWill doesn't need the ball in his hands and cuts to hole and baseline frequently.

I can definitely see KP with his plus passing ability find him alot.

As was commented on by a writer before. The contract he got kind of makes no sense as if Williams plays great then he has a player option to opt out. There is no reason for Derek Williams to have that type of leverage over the Knicks given his career.

So I am wondering who Derek Williams agent is? I wonder if this is a good faith deal with an agent that we are going to be looking to do business with in the future or something to that nature.

All the cuts in this offense should give DWill plenty of good looks. He'll end up in the corner for 3 where he's more efficient as well. It should be interesting to see how he adapts to this offense.

I'm not saying that his Defense and Rebounding aren't a concern, in fact i've mentioned that he has to improve in those areas in my other posts! This isn't the only comments i've made about DWill. I do think that him having more of a clear role could help to focus him more in games and have him more engaged and that could help him to pick it up on the other side of the floor. Not to mention that the bulk of the team will be showing him the right level of effort and defensive technique. This is the most defensive roster we've had in a long time. It's bound to rub off on DWill being around other bigs who defend and give effort on the boards.

Williams probably won't ever live up to being the #2 overall pick but I think he will earn his contract. I don't see this signing as having homerun potential but I see it possibly being a double

What hes lacking......which is hustle and intangles......nyc fans ....media...culture will correct that. Rebounds and defense is about effort. He has skills to score which is harder to learn.

I hope he turns out to be the player Carmelo needs to truly be a success. One thing is for sure about what Phil's vision, he is not too enamored with ISO players; and I love it

The only problem I have is it is a two-year deal. THe guy can finish and he is still young. There are instances of players finally clicking around age 26-27, and this guy is younger than that. It really is about want to. If the guy wants to rebound and defend, he certainly has the athletic ability to do so. Maybe being around Lopez and o' Quinn will light a fire under him. He looks like he will help on offense, because we did not have any PF's last year who could do the things that he does. If it were a one-year deal, I would say solid move. On a two-year deal, Williams really has to take his game up another level for it to be worth it.

I agree. Also he is only a couple of months older than Early and Galloway.

I didn't like his interview with Breen and Clyde. I didn't like that he allowed them to make excuses for him by referencing he had to play for multiple coaches last year in SacTown. Clyde asked him what he needs to do differently to change his fortunes and he basically never answered the question.

The worst thing for me was Clyde had asked O'Quinn what was your game plan when Orlando played against the Knicks. O'Quinn was very succinct in describing that they wanted to take away the pass to the wings, force the bigs off the blocks and take away cutters - very nice summary. When Clyde asked the same question to Williams he said oh man - hesitated and then said we wanted to get the ball to Cousins and play off him. He basically had no clue what the game plan had been against the Knicks when he played in SacTown.

These comments gave me the impression of a kid who isn't locked in mentally.

I got the same impression, but I think with DWill he's somewhat like Amar'e. He's not really a big thinker. You want to give him a very simple set of instructions and let him do his thing. He does naturally what this offense rewards the most and that is guys that move and can find the open spaces of the floor and attack. He's not gonna need the ball to be effective. If you can get him to understand some basic things on D and effort on the boards i think you'll have a really dynamic player.

Maybe it's just me, but I have hazy memories of Melo getting the ball to Amare. DWill, despite all these poor BB IQ reviews, doesn't seem to be the type to be dribbling the ball of his own feet 4-5 times a game.

Strengths: Williams’ production in his 2 years at Arizona were phenomenal, as he managed to improve on his excellent Fr. stats across the board … In terms of physical tools, Williams has very good size for a combo forward, boasting a very strong 6’9 248 lb frame with a long 7’1 wingspan added for good measure … Very fluid and smooth athlete, who also flashes explosiveness leaping off of 2 feet … A true matchup problem for defenders, Williams uses his strong footwork and soft touch to score the ball with very good effectiveness in the post or facing up … His shooting ability is good, as evidenced by his 57% 3-point percentage (albeit on a limited 2 attempts a night), and he uses it to keep his matchup honest so they can’t play off of him … Also functional from mid-range, as a threat to slash or shoot … One of the best isolation players in the entire draft, as PF’s have big trouble with his rangy first step and body control for a guy his size, and SFs are generally at a disadvantage in terms of their size and strength … Has an ease at which he creates shots from the PF spot that will continue to make him a big threat from that position, and his size is certainly adequate enough to play down low too … Fairly decisive finisher down low, who uses his wide lower body to seal in good position to get the pass and go up with shots before the defense collapses on him … Works hard moving without the ball, and isn’t indifferent to throwing his body in his man down low to establish very deep position … Although he’s not likely to seal NBA PF’s as much as he did in college, he also can post from mid-range and utilize quick spins and turnaround moves to use his dribble drive game to his advantage … Understands how to shield defenders using his body off the dribble … Strong finisher, who will at times slip free of the D around the rim and make emphatic dunks as a 2 footed leaper … Very capable finisher with both hands … Pretty easy shooting stroke with a soft touch and compact fundamentals that are very consistent … Pretty good offensive rebounder due to his quick 2nd bounce and solid motor, and will get high percentage shots every game due to this … Won’t take very many bad shots, which is a great sign due to the go-to role he embraced for 2 years … Got to the foul line a lot due to his ability to be a mismatch, shot an OK percentage (74%) once there, and this aspect of his game will very likely translate to the NBA as well … Super efficient, and scored 19.5 ppg on just 10 FG attempts a game … Ability to develop from a fairly unheralded recruit, to a surprisingly productive Fr., then to improve on a great Fr. season across the board as a Soph. speaks to his work ethic, and he still can make improvements on his weaknesses right now to continue to grow ... Showed the ability to step up in big situations with kep plays to win games ...

I dont know about that, outside of LIN, no one has really come to the NY knicks and became a better player (not in the last 15 yrs)

They have had stretches, like duhon, and al harrington.

We have 2 solid passing pgs, one who likes to run, and both who excel in Pnr, so i think he will benefit on the offensive end.
