last offseason many fans were convinced that THJ was the next reggie miller. Now he looks like the next reggie williams.
No one thought THjr was the next Reggie Miller. Everyone said he needed to improve his defense and the other aspects of his game. This is just my opinion same as everyone else, but we have 4 years of college and a summer league to based an evaluation on, and he looks to be a solid player. How high he goes will depend on the work he puts in, but we have no reason to believe he will not put in that work. I stand by my assessment of his potential.

Proud to say I never posted in that one. I never liked Timmy. He seemed dumb and selfish. I think it's too early to tell on Grant, but I loved him in college ball, loved the way he played in SL and I think he has a much higher ceiling in the NBA than Timmy.
I could easily see Grant being a starting point guard for a very solid playoffs team. Absolutely 100%. Only other recent Knicks rookie I've said that about is Shump, who started for the Cavs in the Finals this year.
Other than that? Who knows. Enjoy the ride. Maybe he becomes the next Jrue Holiday, maybe he becomes the first Jerian Grant.

I like grant too but no way can I say that he can 100% be a starter let alone on a playoff team. Then again, charlie ward?

Sometimes we all make statements that don't turn out to be right. What i'm saying is that often posters are making comps but not saying that they think a player is going to be exactly like a HOF'er or exactly the same as the player they are bringing up. They just see certain characteristics that are similar or they feel they have the potential to be in the same range as a player. Doesn't mean they're gonna be right but there's a huge difference between saying someone is "Kind of Like" or "Reminds me Of" or "A similar Type" and someone saying that they are "exactly the same" or they'll be the "Next" whoever.
With regard to Jerian the only thing people are trying to do is make a guess for what they think he has the potential to be as a player. Just because some of our picks didn't reach their potential here doesn't mean that we should never try to make a guess about what a player may be able to do. I'm not seeing any particular argument you've put forward that makes the case for why you think Jerian will be limited to a Charlier Ward type Career. Jerian had a better college basketball career and has shown he's a very capable player. No one is suggesting he'll be a great player and surely hoping for Mike Conley like production isn't going overboard at all. You're saying we should be happy with "serviceable" and I think that's just your own pessimistic take on things that isn't based on any particular evidence or rationale you've observed. Show us why you think Mike Conley levels are so out of bounds.

Obviously we have to see what Jerian does. At this point people are just taking a guess at what kind of talent he has based on what they've seen of him so far. It's always a "hope" since no one can say with certainty what a player is going to be. It's not like when we go thru these kinds of discussions that anyone is saying "I Guarantee that a player is gonna be X". Generally people are just projecting a target.
I would suspect that the Lakers are HOPING that Russell is a Steph Curry type or else why take him at #2? Everyone has some kind of expectations on these prospects. I would venture a guess that Phil wasn't trading for Jerian if he thought he was getting a "Serviceable" PG. That would hardly seem to make it worth the effort. Jerian isn't the sexy pick but I think he's shown that he will perform at a high level against good competition. Jerian seems like he will get it done with more guile than raw physical talent like a DRose or John Wall. I think what helps Jerian most is his BB IQ.

You look at the good players in he league and if their strength is taken away from them they find other ways to help the team. When Timmy is hitting shots hes great. When he's not he does nothing else to help the Knicks. He's a warm body on defense, I never see him handle the ball unless its a fast break and he certainly doesnt help on the boards.So there you go... not to pat myself on the back but calling it like I saw was exactly how it was.When those things round out he will be more than a 20 minute bench player. Time will tell.
mreinman, what your saying about Grant makes zero sense. His success in the league is just a crap shoot? I mean if volume is the only thing that dictates successfuly drafts why hire scouts? I have to say Im not impressed with your arguement that Grant probably wont be much better than Charlie Ward because of draft pick %s. Every draft is different. Taking pick 15 from a very thin draft is not the same as pick 18 from a very deep draft.
I was hoping for some observation in his game, lack of ability to go left, slow mechanics on his jumper.. something besides a pure #s game. There's a reason scouts make more money than IT guys who crunch #s.
Grant is older and one of the best college players. So was Frank, and we talked about his shortcomings. So was Russell, WCS and a variety of guys whom's flaws we discussed ad nauseum. Tell me about Grant's game and Im interested, even if its a knock. Tell me about his %s based on other guy's history that has nothing to do with him... waste of time.

I still see the same talent but a lack of confidence is really hampering his game. He had several wide open shots that he refused to take and that is a MENTAL thing rather than a talent thing. It's really not hard to see that a player has certain talents and skills but can get all mixed up mentally and not be able to perform as he should. Jerian is not a bad player. He's playing bad ball right now but there's a difference. Most of his problems are of the decision making variety. He drives when he should shoot and hesitates when he should just GO! It's really all in his head. A PG has to see the play before it happens and make quick decisions and play confidently. Jerian isn't the 1st PG to experience this kind of paralysis. The Triangle makes it much harder to transition and apparently Jerian just hasn't found a comfort level as soon as we expected.
Jerian is still has good size, is quick enough to get into the lane and still has solid passing and court vision. None of that has changed. With him it's all mental. I expect that at some point the game will slow down for him and he'll be able to perform up to his potential. Some guys get it right away and others struggle but eventually get it.

I have no expectations for him- I'll wait and see how he performs this season, then I'll wait and see what he improves over the summer. By this time next year I'll have started to get a rough idea of the type of player he is and can be.

Or maybe he's a rookie that coming from playing the same offense for 4 years in college and is now playing for the first time in the NBA in one of the hardest cities/teams to play in/for and has to learn a new offense and it's just gonna take him some time to adjust....maybe????

The Latter.
From what I have seen in college, Jerian Grant has THRIVED in a pick and roll situations. Grant is a seriously gifted passer in a PnR, so when you give him many options coming off a pick, he will make some fantastic plays for the team because he usually made the best and most efficient option.
For instance:
Grant was statistically the best pick-and-roll player in the NCAA last season at Notre Dame and has already shown plenty of chemistry with Kristaps Porzingis working off the P&R, with Kristaps shooting 62.5 percent on passes from Grant.Jerian’s ability and willingness to get out and run both in transition and in the half-court is the type of thing that can spark an offense and get the entire team moving quicker, a welcome change to a Knicks offense that seems to be falling into it’s old habits of ball watching.
When the defense committed to Grant on the pick-and-roll, he was even more effective. The Fighting Irish scored an average of 1.1 points per play in those situations, which ranked in the 90th percentile in Division I.
“Obviously coming in, you’re not going to have the ball in your hands as much. Another thing that I liked that he did in Summer league and in college is his how he could well he could post up and pass. I don't know why he stopped doing that. Here is some numbers to back it up:

It is killing me here. A player who has the IT factor for making others better, a point guard who was the best (out of a draft filled with very talented PGs such as a (Rozier, Mudiay, Russell,)) at pick and roll, a concept that we see in practically all NBA teams set up, is being wasted at the expense of trying to force a system that clearly is not working for him or the rest of our players except for Afflalo.
