Quarterback Eli Manning, who is engaged in contract extension talks with the New York Giants, is seeking to become the NFL's highest-paid player with his next contract, the NFL Network is reporting.

Giants owner John Mara has said that he hopes to have his franchise quarterback signed by the start of the season or soon after, but the NFL Network reports a "significant gap" remains between the team and Manning in negotiations.

Manning, whose contract expires after this season, is scheduled to make $17 million in base salary this season. Aaron Rodgers' deal, which he signed two years ago, tops the market with an average annual value of $22 million.

Several quarterbacks have agreed to new contracts this offseason, but none have surpassed the average annual value of Rodgers' contract. The Seattle Seahawks' Russell Wilson averages $21.9 million with his new contract; the Pittsburgh Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger averages $21.85 million with his new deal; and the San Diego Chargers' Philip Rivers and the Carolina Panthers' Cam Newton are at $20.81 million and $20.76 million, respectively, after their extensions.

Manning, who has led the Giants to two Super Bowl titles, signed a six-year, $97.5 million extension in 2009.

As long as the team can compete with his salary and build around him I don't care what they pay him.

Mann7ng is not perfect but he has bought home the bling and this era has been a very good one with him!!!

A lot of guys right in the same range. See what happens - I thought I read something about how Eli wasn't too worried about signing the extension before the season began.
Moonangie @ 8/18/2015 1:11 PM
Two chips are worth paying him more than the other QBs. I still believe in him. With our solid receiving corps, he just needs the O-Line to develop and the D-Line to regain form and we should be in contention for another title.

Eli has delivered the goods and you can't take that away from him...I would like to see him dominate a season where you can actually savor the victories and a good team..He isn't consistent enough to string together good game after good game...Every big victory seems more like chance than skill..But he has delivered tho..

didnt he throw like a 100 INT's 2 seasons ago, can manning carry his team like rodgers did without a top notch RB. Im a die hard packer fan for 20 yrs, manning is not even 50% of Arod, and i'm not being bias

He isn't that kind of player but you can't take away when he given the opportunities, he stepped up...He isn't the sexy QB..But with a good O-line and Good D-Line, he can get you there...How many Superbowls have Rodgers won?..Eli 2 and counting...Can't knock results...

what happened to the good guys giving back cash so that the team remains flexible?

love the guy but he has been pretty bad for many years.

who cares though, he won when it counted but the highest paid player??

The question is, who repaces him? Eli has all the leverage right now, and him and his agent knows this. Philip Rivers contract really hurt us.

ChuckBuck @ 8/18/2015 2:40 PM
In all reality, Eli should donate a good portion to NASCAR.

Not the racing association but all those boys up front that carried those GMEN on those championship runs.

Without Strahan, Osi, Tuck, Kiwanuka, JPP, Eli is ringless.

holfresh @ 8/18/2015 2:44 PM
On a Championship team, everyone plays a role...Football most of all is a team game...Eli delivered when he had to...
newyorknewyork @ 8/18/2015 3:05 PM
With the west coast offense. And getting Cruz back. I expect a huge year from Eli. Last yr he had 2 games with 9 ints and like 5-6 the other 15 games. Did not like the offense we ran even when we won SBs with Gilbride. Doesn't matter what Eli makes as he is always willing to restructure if Reese needs him to.

Never brought home the "bling" without a great D line, though he is the guy you want leading a last minute Super Bowl drive, no doubt. Also has a problematic O Line situation this year- something that will affect his performance this year.

I'm a Jets' fan who, for historical reasons, also roots for the Giants, and I respect what Eli has done and how he carries himself, but he does not warrant being the highest paid player in the league at this point. Deserves more than Rivers and Newton, though, IMO.

The operating theory today is- "If he can get it...he deserves it." Can't see Mara agreeing to this the highest paid desire, but who knows.

Eli better hope that Beckham JR. stays healthy, though, if they put off negotiations until next year, and that his O Line situation is settled.

newyorknewyork @ 8/18/2015 4:30 PM
I would like you guys to go watch or rewatch Giants vs 49ers NFC championship game from the Giants last superbowl run. Then come back and comment.

My best friend is a Big Giants fan, and he always throws that in my face. But again, manning didn't carry the team. Im not saying he's a bad QB, im just saying he is not even top 5, maybe not even top 10.

The difference is, guys like payton, rodgers, drew, wilson, they make their receivers better, manning needs great receivers to make him better.

So what do you prefer, being able to call your QB a stud or Superbowl rings??..Marino was a stud..Montana delivered when he had to...I'll take the rings..

newyorknewyork @ 8/18/2015 7:50 PM
Giants 2007 super bowl had one pro bowler on it Osi. Green Bay had 6 in their SB run (7 with Rodgers). Giants had 3 pro bowlers in there 2011 SB run (4 if you count Eli).
gunsnewing @ 8/19/2015 7:09 AM
I'd be ok with this if we didn't have so many holes on D. Offense will be great so Eli's numbers will back up whatever deal he gets.nreally concerned about the D. However the Giants always have a young pass rusher who emerges. Maybe Double On& Moore will explode onto the seen
Moonangie @ 8/19/2015 8:55 AM
I agree with everyone who are saying he's nhot the best so he doesn't deserve to be paid like the best. But given the right support (read: O-Line and D-Line) he has proven to be a winner. He has an X-factor, an indomitable spirit and a will to win. Those intangibles have a LOT to do with our two chips. He deserves to be recognized and paid for that, just maybe not quite as much as Rogers.

Did you just put Russell Wilson ahead of Eli and Big Ben? Wilson is far below those 2 as starting QB's. Talk about a guy who benefitted from a all world defense! Wilson is the one who is severely overpaid here. He is a game manager. His IQ and feet make him a really good game manager which makes up for his lack of physical skills but he can't carry a team the way the other hall of fame bound QB's can. If Wilson and Rivers are making that kind of coin then there is no reason why shouldn't be paid equal value of greater. It is a team game. End of story.

Eli and the offense is fine. O-line should improve based on familiarity alone. It's the defense that's the big question mark. And he thought that Eli doesn't make his WR's better is insane. Yes he misses Plexico but he still managed to win another Super Bowl without him. Why you ask? Because he Nicks & Cruz blossomed into top notch WR's under Eli. They weren't signed to help Eli! Eli played a part in their development! And now he is doing the same with Beckham! Come on guys think for a minute. What all pro WR has the duck arm Russell Wilson produce. Let me sit back and wait for an answer.

It sucks at Eli is going to use up so much of he cap but every top team is dealing with high priced QB's. Most Havent accomplished what Eli has. The way you get around it is by continuing to draft well. Continuing to draft filthy animal pass rushers like Strahan, Tuck, Osi, Kiwi, JPP, Moore & Double O. Successful teams draft incredibl well. Same in any sport. Knicks overpay 2nd tier players and then go out and draft epic busts or worse they trade their high lottery picks. That right there is the different between the Giants, Rangers & now the Mets and maybe the Yankees. Knicks are trying to do it the right way now. The Jets are still waiting to draft that franchise QB like 75% of the league are

he's going to get $65 million in guaranteed money and 4 years at $80million or 5 years at $100 million. That is in line with what Big Ben and Phillip Rivers got
