Prior to this offseason he has been recruiting with vet mini deals and the mid level exception. Not sure what you expected him to pull off with no money available to spend. This offseason it sounded like his presence at least garnered consideration from Aldridge.

Idk, if a player really wants to play with another, they let it be known, and salaries can come off the books one way or another. I knew the "no money" angle would be brought up, but even WITH money they still didnt come.

I don't think there was anyway of getting Amare and Bargs off the books before their contracts expired once the amnesty was used on Billups. Not sure who didn't come that was leaving their team though. Aldridge was intrigued if you believe reports and I don't think the Knicks wanted Monroe after the draft. I do think they wanted DeAndre but that didn't happen.

crush i wasnt criticizing melo i was just pointing out the facts so far. Also lets be honest aldridge was never coming here. Just because he said he was impressed doesnt mean he was coming here. Believe me ive heard so many players say similar things about teams they didnt sign with

As long as the facts include the salary cap situation. There was no cap space during the Amare, Tyson, Bargs tenure and there wasn't much to show for the money spent on the court. I believe Amare was the highest paid player in the league last year.

ok thats fair but how about this year? We had plenty of cap space for the top free agents. Melo just isnt a player who other top players are gonna run to join. Thats not a criticism just how it seems to be. I still feel melo is the perfect number 2 guy on a playoff team

Only one top player left his team and he said he was interested in the Knicks.

thats nice but like i mentioned before the likelihood that he was really considering coming here was probably as high as finding jimmy hoffa lol. Ive seen many free agents compliment the other teams who were trying to sign them. It is a respectful statement but he was never coming here realistically

First off, we never offered Monroe a contract, largely because I dont think Phil was sold on paying him so much and I think he prefered Lopez's defensive presence anyway. As for LeBron, this is a totally different situation from what we had in 2010, we have everything the Miami Heat did back then to be able to attract LeBron:

Superstar on the roster ✅
Close Friends of Durant (Melo and Fish) ✅
Championship pedigree ✅
Defensive minded role players ✅
Elite big man (Kristaps)
Winning team

Im not saying for sure that he will come, but if Kristaps shows signs of being a stud big man and we can make the playoffs while the Thunder get an early exit again or dont make the playoffs again, then the knicks have as good a shot as anyone.

Let me preface this by saying I don't want Durant..But Westbrook Durant didn't work because of the coach..Deep in the playoffs OKC just came up court and ran one on one plays..Billy Donovan will be a much better coach for them...

so aldrich yes but durant no??

I'm assuming you mean Aldridge..There is this "fit" thing that people pay attention to..Two guys essentially playing the same position isn't necessarily good while Aldrige will be more of an interior player while Melo play the wing or does Melo type things..That might be better when constructing a team..

I don't need the best players in the world on my team..I just need a good enough team that is well coached to compete against the best players/teams in the world..

You can play Melo n Durant in the Triangle. There really is no issue because of the prescribed spacing and movement. They both are effective from just about anywhere and this offense rewards that versatility. I'm not really pushing for it or expecting it but it could work easily. In the Triangle it's more about basketball players with skills than positions.

What about front line defense and rebounding?..Post play in the triangle?

Phil has played some interesting lineups over the years. Mostly traditional but usually well rounded players. What is it about KD n Melo that precludes putting defenders n rebounders on the floor with them?

MJ, Pippen and Rodman are three of the best defensive players of their time...Rodman may be the best rebounder of his time...Shaq and Kobe are excellent defenders in their primes...Shaq is an excellent rebounder and post player...Metta, Kobe, even Ariza were very good defenders...Gasol and Bynum can rebound....Melo, KD and KP rotation in your front line will be lacking in defense and rebounding..No way to sugar coat this fact...
yellowboy90 @ 9/6/2015 5:44 PM
I would not worry about rebounding with Melo and Durant with Lopez on the floor. I doubt the defense would be bad either.

Well Durant rebounds pretty well for a sf and his defense s not awful. Memo can defend when he wants but he did well as a post defender at the 4 and rebounded I think slightly below avg for a 4, I think he was avg 8 rebs which was what Aldridge was pulling down before Lopez got to Portland. I think you could create a defense around Lopez and use Duramt's and Mall's skill sets.

I don't think Melo defended the 4 well at all when he played it..He often got bullied at the position...I don't see Durant ever playing the 4...8 rebounds a game for a PF is not a good number, it's not bad..I never thought Amare was rebounding enough at that position..Aldridge numbers probably got better because it's the difference between playing with a consistent center versus not playing with one at all...It means that many more bodies on Aldridge...

Obviously it's better to have Durant than not to have Durant..But in an ideal situation, I wouldn't be looking to team Durant and Melo together...

knickscity @ 9/6/2015 7:40 PM
If Durant wanted to come here, you make it happen. You make things fit afterwards. This isnt Marbury and Steve Francis.

KD and Melo are just 2 players and nothing about them as players makes them a poor fit or impossible to build a rotation around. Both of them are too versatile to really clash and especially in the Triangle. You've got 3 more starters plus the bench to figure out a rotation. Sure if you stick with only mentioning KP it can be made to sound like a bad combination but that's not the end of the story. They won't have to be the greatest defensive unit ever in order to win. I'm sure that an adequate defensive lineup could be put together.
