Actually the more I have seen him play the more Im willing to pay--right now Id pay 45mm for 5 years. Id like to make him our new long term PG. Id like to get rid of either Lopez or Calderon's salary--or best BOTH.
There's no way that Miami can pay Johnson, Whiteside and Wade large contracts in addition to their other players, is there?
Briggs I don't know if we can afford to sign Johnson after the $60M you gave to Galloway.

I said after Galloway started the season that hed be playing himself into a multi million dollar contract if he continued like this and he shot himself dead out. Its been an incredible flip of the switch for the player.
Johnson is taller--much more athletic multi dimensional and just tipping the scales of what he can do in this league.

I know, I'm just teasing. Miami has looked pretty damn good lately. And Johnson is a big reason why. He looked great when they played OKC the other night. And even more so against the Cavs Saturday.
I don't know what his market is in this FA climate with the cap rising, but the Knicks need to dramatically upgrade the PG position and he'd be an intriguing option. And as someone mentioned upthread, with Miami needing to pay Whiteside and Wade... they may have a hard time matching a big offer on Johnson. Though they traded Chalmers once they realized what they had in him, so you have to think they like him a lot.

I think that is the very thing. They can't go over the cap to pay Whiteside. Unless they pull off some big trades (and actually they might do so),
it appears they can't resign everyone. I think it was on the other board where someone broke it down really well. Think in one of the Whiteside threads.
Just went through the "How much would you pay him" thread, and couldn't find the breakdown I am thinking of. But the most anyone can offer him I read,
is 21 million.
I would love to sign Tyler Johnson too but we have a kid named Grant that's full of potential too. Calderón is currently in that mentor role. If we sign Tyler we break that bond and tradition. After the season plays out we'll have a better idea but knicks need to keep continuity.
small sample but this guy looks phenomenal so far.
Im going to add Dwight Powell to my free agent want list.
Both Tyler and Dwight are RFA's BUT both Dallas and Miami have pretty significant caps going into next season.
Projections
Tytler Johnson 5 years 45mm(9mm per)
Dwight Powell 5 years 37.5mm(7.5mm per)
Johnson would be an awesome pick up.

Am I wrong in thinking that in some ways it seems like the NBA guard situation is going back to the days when I started watching the game...when there were no PG/SG designations.
Don't see why Johnson, who is about 6'3.5," can't be a combo guard on the Knicks, and that down the line, he and Grant could be a nice guard combo.
Have to think that Miami will find some way to keep him, though.

Haven't seem Tyler play too much, is he a starting caliber player? I see his offensive numbers but how is he on the other side of the ball? $45M over 5 years is a good payday.

I think you know the lowdown with Miami, they in deep doo-doo with the cap and Whiteside, can't go over it to sign him. Makes the math tough, someone not coming back.
Miami has money to spend.......

How they want to is another story. What do they do with Wade is the big question? He comes off the books and their salary commitment for next year is only 51mil.
Whiteside and Wade need to be paid but what will they do???
Wade can't get 20mil Plus anywhere else but I doubt Miami wants to pay him that either.
Melo to Miami for Winslow, Deng and Tyler Johnson makes sense but cap wise it won't work. Add Dragic and Calderon to the mix it does. Deng is a free agent this summer.

can't see how they can let him go. Wade is getting older and he is a big part of the future with the way he is playing. Whiteside is still a nut job waiting to explode. Tyler shooting is just off the charts even if it comes down a bit.
