I love Melo/KP at the forwards but there is a massive drop after that in talent. I think AA is a good 3rd scorer and just as good as JR.

Lance and Calderon I see as good bench guys. A great bench guy would be a starter who comes off the bench like Iggy.

This is an NBA roster but some perspective... 12-14 isnt anything great and you have 7 guys with GREAT after their names. Knicks are looking better but a long ways to go and plenty of improvement from within that can take place.

Mo Williams and JR Smith are starters, who will quickly become bench players for the Cavs, when Kyre and Shump come back. They also have Richard Jefferson on the bench, who's been a starter for over 15 years.

You know when you have Great bench players, when your bench players can also be respectable NBA starters.

Lance is a great example of someone that could and should be a starter for us. On a good team, he wouldn't get any playing time.

Oh come on now with lance wouldn't get any playing time on a good team. I think he'd get playing time on a lot of good teams. He's worked hard on his shot and it shows and he can defend 4 positions and do it well. The guy is all energy all the time and players and coaches love that. I'm a big Lance fan and have been since we got him last year and i was one of the few that absolutely wanted him back with us and certainly happy he is.

I agree with everything you said.....and this isn't a knock on Lance. It just shows you how far behind we are from championship caliber teams. Just need to help everybody temper their expectations a little. Lance has been a great player and I personally did not see his impact last year, but clearly I (and many others on this site too afraid to admit their faults) was wrong about Lance. He should be in the starting lineup or in a sixth man role. But some of these NBA teams are loaded on the bench, with great bench players that can't find any minutes.

I think Carmelo in 2015 is playing like a superstar. Yes offensively he is struggling, but try to do what he is doing less then 6 months removed from major knee surgery.

KO in my opinion should not be a bench player. He is a good starting front court player who provides great intangibles (energy, defense, toughness, high IQ)

Other then those two,I agree with your assessment. But, I don't believe RoLo should be starting, because KO fits better between Carmelo and KP. KO is such a great passer, he can be the point center from the high post

KOQ seems decent against second strings, why do you think he would be able to perform at same level against upgraded talent in starters?

I like what you're saying but lets see if O'Quinn can do what he's doing now consistently before we go naming him a starter cause he started out the season well to and then disappeared for a while which is why Seraphin took his role for a couple of weeks. To be a starter you must be somewhat consistent and he hasn't shown that he can do that yet but it's early so we will see.
nixluva @ 12/17/2015 1:55 PM
I agree that Melo and KP are the top tier on this team and then you have a pretty big drop to Afflalo as the 3rd best player. After that LT has become a very important core rotation player. He changes the energy along with Gallo who is near the same level. So Melo, KP, LT, Afflalo and Gallo IMO are the best players on the team.

KOQ and DWill are somewhat underutilized and i'd say that Jerian is also being misused. These guys need more PnR and uptempo and less Triangle in order to really shine. If Fish allowed them to be a bit more focused on the weak side aspects of the Triangle over the Strong Side Triangle and also just play a more open style when they have these guys on the floor, they would be more comfortable. There are other actions in the Triangle like "Blind Pig" which better fit these players. I know that Fish knows this since it's always been known that you need to adjust the Triangle based on personnel. I have seen some movement in this direction. I'm interested in seeing how this develops the rest of the way.

A change is desperately needed in our team. I am not a coach, but as a basketball enthusiast I can tell you that our first unit is in need for speed, pinpoint passing, and toughness at the front court. The only big on our roster capable of providing those missing ingredients other then KP is KO. He is a type of dude who leave it all on the the court and that is infectious. If Fish can find ways to keep this dude motivated, he can help move this team in the right direction. Motivate this dude by telling him he is the toughest cat on the roster and feed him the minutes necessary to play his game. He is an asset. I like RoLo, but the fact that he always looks to score the ball; as well as, he is turnover prone, are annoying to me.

SPEED SPEED SPEED......TOUGHNESSSSS

Your ratings are way too kind IMO, also I'd say a great bench player should be higher than a meh starter.

Mine are:

Melo:Great
KP: Great
Afflalo: Good Starter
Calderon: Below average starter/solid bench player
Lopez: average starter looking below average so far
Galloway: Average bench player
Grant: Average bench player
DWill: Good bench player
Seraphin: Above average bench player
LT: Great bench player (huge improvement)
Sasha: Average becnch vet
Amundson: borderline d-league player
Early- can't really say, but I'd guess average bench player
KOQ- Good bench player

Well thanks for not playing the right way and making up new rankings. Maybe next time just don't play.
Knicks1969 @ 12/17/2015 5:04 PM
The stating five is lacking the following: an athletic penetrator. We drafted Grant for that purpose, but I feel this dude is not being utilized properly. He is quick and big enough to defend PGs and SGs.

The starting 5 is further missing a true finisher at the 5 position. RoLo is decent, but his penchant to always want to score the ball; as well as, his inability to cleanly come up to meet the entry pass, are causing a lot of TOs and other undisciplined output.

To remedy those situations I believe we could easily move RoLo and Calderon to the bench and play Grant and KO. We have enough scoring with AA, KP and Carmelo, but we are lacking another playmaker and enforcer to start the game.

Ideally, it would benefit the Knicks to trade Calderon and RoLo, but they are good guys that we can use down the road. Move them to the bench is the BEST option

I can't tell if you're trying to be sarcastic or not, but I didn't think your rankings adequately described the players, so I used different wording. Also if we have so many "great" players on our team why are we 2 games under .500?

mreinman @ 12/17/2015 8:24 PM
based on this year and the triangle or career?

Career wise, Rolo is a much much much better player than Afflalo.

Triangle Rolo? Not that good.

This fair... But KOQ is not so good.
Rarely you can see such a bad defensive rebounder and indecisive under the basket big man with such a big ass...
He need to work on his game... he is very good in screaming zo...

I'll play using your rankings:

Super star
Great Melo
Really good KP
Good
He's a starter but eh Affalo, Lopez
Great bench player
Good bench player Calderon, Galloway, Thomas,
Meh Sasha, Early, Amundson, Williams, Grant, KO, Seraphin

I have to disagree with your rankings if you have two great players
a really good player
10 more (!!) - good rotation players - you are not a team battling for the last playoff spot.

Afflao in his best years is an average starter, a really good players by my estimation, would need to be better than most starting two guards. I don't think that is the case.

KP is great for a rookie and has great potential, but he is not yet consistent enough to be called great player.

Lopez I think in a good year is an average starting center - but he hasn't been this year.

I don't see how we could have so many good to great bench players, but still have a below average bench.

There is not a single player on our bench who came into this year as a Solid rotational guy. Seraphin, Williams and KO all have potential, but have never got it together at previous stops. Thomas and Admundson were solid citizens but not really quality rotation guys. Galloway had one year of solid contributions for a terrible team. Grant is a rookie. Sasha is a retread. Considering their history we've gotten a lot out of our bench - but... it's no where close to as good as you rate it.

I think you are confusing Potential with Production. If I was going to rate players based on there ceilings my rankings would be close to yours.

If everyone on this board rates the players this highly - no wonder why our coach is vilified.

Hopefully, by the end of the year at least 8 of these guys will live up to your rankings and we'll have a pretty competitive team.

Thanks for posting it was a fun exercise.
