Knicks · Towns vs KPorzingus last night?? (page 1)

callmened @ 12/17/2015 12:41 PM
any thoughts?!?! would love to hear from the group. here are mine:

- both are going to be great STRETCH 5s (which is what this league is evolving into)
- both are great defenders - especially KP with the blocked shots
- both are great shooters for their size. however KP might have the advantage cuz of his height (hard to block)
- Towns is a better passer but KP isnt bad
- Towns is more polished offensively, especially with dribble drives
- KP has obvious advantages due to his size.
- OVERALL: i feel like the NBA is evolving to Stretch 5s and im happy we have one of them

PS - it wouldnt surprise me if Towns is a knick some day. He'll do his 7 yr sentence with minnesota (oops i mean rookie deal plus extension), then sign with the knicks at age 25 or so ---- hopefully!

Bonn1997 @ 12/17/2015 12:49 PM
I think Towns is better right now because of his shot selection. They had very different games last night: strong rebounding and scoring for Towns and shot-blocking from KP.
Knicks1969 @ 12/17/2015 1:08 PM
I love those two kids. They are what the league will look like two years from now. Low post unskilled bigs like Deandre Jordan/Howard will no longer be the force of the league. Smart kids and fundamentally sound

Next up is Okafor who missed the 1st regular season match up. It's like a rookie of the year tournament. lol
crzymdups @ 12/17/2015 1:20 PM
Draft Express did a whole write up / video analysis of the matchup...

I can't figure out how to embed their video, but go to the link, it's fun.

legitimate question: is there any other 7 foot guy who runs curls?

porzingis is such a game changer. His mere presence on D is effective. He annihilated Wiggens on a number of drivers. Impact extends beyond the block totals

On offense he's not only a stetch 4 or 5. You could say Rik Smits was one of those if you want. He's running around and cutting too. Once that part of his game gets some polish it will be sight to behold. Clyde has been calling for him to develop a hook shot. Can you imagine?

His mobility at his size is truly stunning.

I don't know that many people talked about that when he was being discussed as a prospect - and I don't know that you can really see how it will translate til he's on the court against other NBA players. But it is what makes him special, along with his size and shooting touch.

Towns needs and wants the ball. KP is more opportunistic. He's not aggressive in the way that Towns is. I'm waiting for KP to become that guy. No rush and if he never gets there he's still a hell of a player just the way he is.

It's impossible to block anybodys hook shot without fouling. But a hook shot from a 7'3 center will give the opponent nightmares.

oh good way to put it.

earthmansurfer @ 12/17/2015 4:02 PM
7 Blocks but how many altered shots? Seriously, it is the same thing all said and done. He must affect 20 shots a game like that.
I look forward to him playing the 5 more, but not exclusively.

Towns looks more polished but KP is going to be a terror and probably be overall better player imo. That defense is just too much.

Knixkik @ 12/17/2015 4:31 PM
We basically saw 2 variations of the future of the big man in the league. Both guys will dominate on both ends of the floor in their own style and should be top 10 NBA players in 3-4 years.
ChuckBuck @ 12/17/2015 4:37 PM
Really taking us back to the dominant bigs era, but in a 2015 way.

Ewing, Robinson, Olajuwon, Shaq, Mourning, Duncan.

Now it'll be KP, Towns, Okafor, Davis, Drummond, Whiteside. All unique and plays with their own flair for the game.

I agree, very similar.

Yeah, I think someone will be able to build a huge fast athletic team that can eventually topple Golden State's shooting and speed. Minnesota might be able to be that team with Wiggins, Towns, LaVine, Dieng, etc.

Teams need to prepare for life after Curry and LeBron. Not that they can't be beat, but rather than try to compete with them now, it's better off to prepare and be ready in 3-4 years when those core groups decline. Minn is definitely set up well for the future. New Orleans will find a way to get Davis some help too. In the east, i feel it is up for grabs. If we can develop a good group around KP, then we can be set up very nicely. Milwaukee has more talent, but i don't trust how it mixes, plus they don't have a player with KP's talent. You don't win with a bunch of good young guys, you need a GREAT young talented player. That is why i'm not concerned about Orlando or Boston either. Sure they have a ton of young talent, but i don't see a future superstar on either of their teams. I think it's our's for the taking.

Haven't watched the whole piece, but I think based on the flashes shown, gotta be KP, if you're going by ceiling.

One of the two players under discussion had 3 assists yesterday, the other had 0. Can you guess who had 0? They both average 1APG, by the way, but one of them happens to be a more fancy passer.

Towns is much more confident as a shooter at this point with a quicker release. He also has some inside moves we did not see yesterday- only saw his hook, once, I think.

As a shooter, KP has to develop some moves or areas on the floor where he is in auto mode, and he can't be taking 3s when he is 5ft beyond the line.

Towns did not have a defensive impact or presence in yesterday's game, IMO, and this surprised me. You get the feeling that other teams actually have to adapt to KP's ability on D, not sure the same thing is true for Towns at this time.

Stretch 5's? I do fear for the game of basketball if this is a trend. It will surely make BB boring to watch. One player dribbling behind the 3pt line...his 4 teammates hanging behind the line. Is this really where the game is heading...5 players missing, on average, about 72% of their shots? This is why Pops...not only Phil, has shed tears over how the 3 pt shot perverts what can be a beautiful game that at one time required players do more than stand around.

This becomes a trend and you will be having 1 dimensional players coming into the NBA. This is similar to all those quarterbacks coming out of college who have trouble playing in a pro-offense because they've been playing simplified quarterbacking in dumbed down offenses their entire career.

The reason you like a guy like Towns is that he has a well developed interior game along with a good J. Calipari made him more of an interior player last year, but you can see that Towns' dad did a good job making sure that his son had a more complete game.

KP has, for the most part, been a stretch 4 in Europe, and you can see that his inside came is underdeveloped. And no, mreinman, you don't want KP banging down low in the post all the time, but you can
see some early limitations in his game because he did not do enough in the post over in Europe.

I have no doubt that he will develop a good game down low in the upcoming years, but the problems you see him having down in the pit can be directly linked to the kind of ball they had him playing in Spain.

Don't listen to me, though...I got them olde tyme ideas which need to be eradicated from the game.

Yup...

He'll get there, but it will be a few years down the road.

someone made a comment about this 7-3 center running around screens like a wing. thats what makes him so special to me
