If our roach (Fisher) knows that it is hard for our boys to be at their best when everything is kind of NEW, night-in and night-out, why is it that he finds it so difficult to pick 9 or 10 players and play them consistent minutes for a stretch of maybe 5 games?????? Please advise.

We’ve got a lot of new guys, so it’s hard to be at your best when everything is kind of new, night-in and night-out. It just takes time.

Its actually called "ambition". You accuse some of us for not thinking big enough but the fact is if you aspire to be great, it takes time to build a base, cultivate talent, and aquire talent.
For fans you need only understand and have patience.

what is Derek Williams upside if he is allowed to just play as a super athlete? If instead he is given the chance to learn to play the right way and has a two year contract to do so? To me if he plays 5 minutes and plays it well, then he'll get more minutes. its called learned behavior. If he plays like an idiot and allowed to stay in, then what is he learning? Small sample example.

How about using the dude (Williams) for what he does best? Some cats take a lot longer to learn how to play the game the right way; let me use Jamal Crawford as an example. All the dude does is provide instant offense. He is a horrendous defender and often over dribble. However, his coaches have learned to take advantage of what he does best. Is he a bad player? I would say no. Wiliams provides something that is sorely needed, speed and agility. He shoots many more freethrows then most on the roster; why? Because he is constantly attacking the rim. With the right mix of players (Carmelo, KP, Lance, and Grant), that dude has excelled.

Playing him just 8 minutes a game is doing the team and the actual player a disservice. How much can you learn in just 8 minutes? Not much. Ride the dude hard, and coach him through film sessions.

jamal crawford is a career LOSER and he makes others around him WORSE. he hurts the teams he plays for. you have ironically provided the best evidence, in this example, for why you should NEVER be a team that tries to accommodate as the default position for some players.

you want williams to be on the floor? he has to earn it through defense. he remains a liability on defense. his defensive real plus/minus is -.54, meaning he is a BELOW AVERAGE DEFENDER.

he averages per36 one steal a game and 2 assists, with an underwhelming 53%TS.

Play the right way for 5 min. Then 8, 10, 15, etc until he evolves into the kind of player he can be.

We're a totally different team since Fish decided to go to a shorter rotation, trust Lopez/Porzingis more and play 1 of them virtually the entire 48 minutes. Lots more involvement.

Phil may want to trade for a SG if he can't get a point, because Afflalo's being overworked though. Only way we can be competitive against better teams. Have to stick to a 9 man rotation.

Good job Fish.

Yeah that was big and a huge win.

Great Job by Fisher.....

He finally started calling his team out......And look at the results.

That gave Melo the open platform to follow fisher's lead with his media leadership quotes.

Looks like chemistry is starting to build, thanks to Fisher, who is still learning on the job.

Said before the game. NY's talent isn't nearly as skilled or talented on offense as they are on defense. Other than Calderon, every single Knick either is or has the ability to be an above average to good defender. With Gallo out at 1 sometimes, we can put forth lineups that are shut down types. I don't think this team realizes it's identity is more based on their defense than offense. Once they do, they can truly maximize themselves.

Again tonight - they played really well defensively early, but towards the 2nd half they began giving Atlanta too many open 3's. I understand leaving the bigs open early, but once they showed they were hurting you with the 3's, gotta stop that. Atlanta at one point was 14/34 which is like the equivalent of 21/34 shooting on 2's. You can't let teams come back or stay in games like that when you've completely dominated them in every way possible. Just silly defensive IQ like that hurts us.

Point is, I think games like tonight are the best this team can do on offense. Afflalo on fire, guys play smart in the Tri. Melo didn't shoot great but passed like a PG. It's the defense though, that can keep improving. We've got shut down guys on this team. Lopez is a huge thorn/agitator. Porzingis gave Millsap fits. Gallo can stay infront of his man very well, as can Grant. Thomas as well. DWill's defense has even improved ten fold. I love this team's defensive potential. Fisher should keep harping on it. The offense will come and go this season. Defense and defensive effort as well as boards are where this team can be something special.

It is simply foolish to have RoLo on Milsap or Horford. In the forth Lance or KP should have gotten this assignments

So you are satisfied with RoLo defending Millsap?

I did not say take him out, we almost gave the game away with him guarding Millsap

I understand your concern but RoLo also did a lot of positive things despite those few defensive breakdowns. In the end the Knicks got it right.

wow, this is beyond pure stupidity. lance thomas on horford or millsap? rolo did have fine on both, horford was shooting 3's because he didn't wanna go in the paint and bang bodies with rolo.

My goodness can you ever just give it a break?? We're playing well right now and i'm sure Fisher had his reasons that nobody on a message board would know about why he had which rotations out there at certain times.

You hit it on the head. Have you ever noticed on the gameday threads that when the Knicks are playing well you won't see Knicks1969 on there posting too much until something bad happens but when we're losing he's all over the gameday thread. I know we have others that are also Fisher haters but they can at least give credit to Fisher when we're playing well.

fitzfarm @ 1/6/2016 10:33 AM
I'd have to say, I was on fishers case it was like watching geno smith the guy was making the same mistakes over and over again no adjustments, random substitutions, random rotation, random timeouts.

But

These past two games are like the hand of Phil has come down and touched fishers brain.

Fish has shortened his rotation. He has his guys moving the ball, and pushing the tempo getting easy looks. We are playing with true grit on defense... Now it's all about consistency let's see this effort on a nightly basis.

The only thing that needs to stop is the iSo game in the fourth keep the ball moving! The iso could be fatigue and the vets stepping up. But let's get away from iso in the fourth.

ChuckBuck @ 1/6/2016 10:40 AM
I think Fisher's New Year's resolution was to ditch the "fling shyt on the wall and hope it sticks with 11, 12 guys rotation" and go with a hard 9.

So far it's working. Kudos Phil!

Nalod @ 1/6/2016 11:43 AM
or..........he kept his team by giving minutes to the new guys and if they performed they stick in the rotation.
There is a method to this.

Phuching Jose CaldePhuchingRone fed in the lane for layup from Phuching Robin PhuchingLopez to seal the win was phuching epic last nite!!!

I have to admit, that Give and Go was the play of the game last night. After all the ISO garbage plays that slowly led ATL back in, it was the team ball Triangle centric traditional give and go that sealed it.

There's no scripted play called there, just a read and react instinct by system play, which is a credit to the coaching staff, Fisher included. So kudos to Fish for keeping with the triangle through thick and thin. He has to tighten that 4th quarter ISO BS though and remind Melo and Afflalo there's 4 other players on the floor.

Was Milsap at the 5 when Lopez was on him?

Can't remember, but if Atlanta went that small, and you want Lopez on the floor, you almost have to have him on Millsap...NO?

Hawks had some success with Horford beyond the arc. They really don't have a true center, unless Taveras or Splitter are on the floor.

You needed Lopez on the floor to mix it up yesterday, as the Hawks tried to play bully ball out of frustration. Only other guys you want playing enforcer are O'Quinn and Seraphin, and they are out of the rotation at this point.

Horford's 3's were wide open shots. Lopez needs to feel more at ease guarding a guy like him on the perimeter, and the other Knicks defenders have to be ready to show themselves if Horford things about driving, but I think you needed Lopez on the floor, yesterday.
