Knicks · KP's shot selection is really hurting his game (page 1)

Bobby Portis looked like a much superior player. He took good open shots both in and out was more active and physical than KP. He looked liked the 4 pick and KP looked like the 20th pick. Seriously KP is playing like he is in between positions and has no discipline in shot selection and this must change.
His FG% is headed under 40% at this rate--hes at 41 change now.

Interesting.....to me Portis looked like a player on a better team, with a team that understands their identity, with an up and coming superstar and better role players that understand their role, in a system that fits their skill set.

Put Portis on this team and KP on the bulls, and you would be creating the same thread about Portis shot selection.

I dont think so. KP can use his length even opportunistically and play better than he is now. He had that one beautiful hook and then he had 10 forced outside shots--terrible.

KP HAD TWO HOOKS... 2! LOL

He forgets he is 7'3 he can get a good look off on most NBA players. I said it before he is a small 7'3 on offense. He is trying to use glass when a straight up shot at the basket is needed. He tries to shoot off the dribble and never squares to the basket the fundamental are completely lost. He is rarely in a good position to shoot once he tries to back down an opponent. He gets discombobulated once an opponent gives him some resistance on the post. He needs to take advantage of his height and get good looks at the basket.
GustavBahler @ 1/1/2016 10:46 PM
What Id like to see KP do is pull the trigger faster on his decision making. If he wants to make use of his quickness for a big man, KP would be better served taking it to the rim as soon as he catches the ball, if thats the call he's making. He pump fakes or just stands there for a while, faster decisions have a better shot at putting the defender on his heels.

They said in the broadcast that KP has some moves he's not comfortable making yet (good news) so help should be on the way.

I feel the last few weeks he's been missing plenty of shots that are wide open or easy makes that he was making earlier in the season. I don't think he takes too many bad shots as much as he's uncertain at times what move to do and what play to make.

I've been unhappy with his offense for a few weeks mainly because he's a good shooter who isn't taking enough open looks. The way Porzingis should play is the moment he catches it in a spot up situation he should launch. I sense the coaching staff is trying to tell everyone to look for a teammate and he doesn't want to play like a gunner. But he's got the skillset for someone who should be either catching and shooting right away (instead of pausing looking for a player to pass then thinking of making a play) or he should be posting up (or cutting to the basket).

The offense we run also gets messed up too much. Guys are just lost half the time.

I will say I much rather see Porzingis deal with this as a rookie and go 4-14 from the field than Afflalo, or any other veteran player unlikely to get much better or even be a Knick a few years from now. This is part of becoming a great player. Go back and watch rookie Dirk, he struggled far more than Porzingis has. And to top it off, Porzingis is playing in an offense that seems way too complicated for most of these guys. The kid's a 7'3 SF who has skills to be a SG, SF, PF or C. He can play any of those 4 roles. When you do that, you often get lost as to what's the best and what's your bread and butter. To me his bread and butter is getting jumpshots coming off screens and posting up. Anything else (the dribbling to the basket, the wing moves) I'm not convinced are going to be his strengths in the league. Ideally he figures that out right away - that he ought to be focusing on post moves and taking jumpshots off screens (or open in spot ups) but I don't think that will happen until experimentation with all the other stuff is done completely. Literally the guy takes plays a SG, SF, PF and C would. He's doing a bit of everything and not showing to be great at one particular aspect of them. If he focused on 2 main types of roles to play in the offense, I'd bet he'd become a killer in them with what he's shown with his shooting touch and post moves.

Give me a few dunks. Go rip the fcking rim down and than talk to me.
BRIGGS @ 1/1/2016 10:59 PM

Play like this--- the first comment on there----mine.

Not easy to do when you're driving into traffic at 7'3. Guys at PF/C who try and do that get called for charges plenty. If he gets those plays, it'll be if they post him up from mid-post area and he beats his man off the dribble to dunk. And I've also suspected his legs and body are way more tired that he is letting on. His jumps and spring to his step isn't the same as it was 2 months ago.
HofstraBBall @ 1/1/2016 11:18 PM
Keep hearing how the main goal this year is his development. Well, 7'3 guy should be curling for foul line jumpers and working on back to basket moves down low. Not taking deep threes And making double moves on turn arounds. Who is going to block his shot at the 4? He has to realize he can catch and shoot without worrying about the defender. However, do think a good pick and roll play with a guard that can drive would enable him to get free a lot easier for that nice mid range shot he has. Unfortunately, it's A play we don't run and a guard we don't have.
dk7th @ 1/1/2016 11:36 PM
i was okay with his shot selection. i saw one really bad rushed shot from three. he took three shots off glass that were all missed in the same way... too high and short. that's a shot he will learn to hit consistently.
JesseDark @ 1/2/2016 1:04 AM
Sometimes it looks like he doesn't have a place in the offense. I don't think he is jacking up shots but something is off about his place in the offense.
Gudris @ 1/2/2016 6:21 AM
I think his body is changing(getting more muscle) and that affects his balance on shooting, just give him some time to adjust
ESOMKnicks @ 1/2/2016 7:29 AM
The team system has to set up shots for him. Dumping the ball to him when he is covered and asking him to create is not going to work. He is not that type of player (yet).

I agree. I don't think his shot selection is bad. I do think he needs more catch and shoot opportunities.
TAB @ 1/2/2016 10:18 AM
I think he did well early so we are trying to make him do things he can't yet. With penetration he becomes better and can either be ready to shoot like a stretch or crash the basket for follows. He is settling because we lack consistent execution.

You do realize that he's not playing in Europe anymore right and that the stuff he did against the players in Europe doesn't work against professional NBA players right?? I think all we're seeing is his age and we sometimes forget that he's only 20. What was working for him in the beginning of the year isn't working now cause teams have tape to watch of him. The kid has a lot of work to do but i have 100% confidence he'll get it right but this year will be a learning year for him. A real point guard could do wonders for him as well. I also think that maybe the pressure of being the #2 player on the team could be getting to him as well which is a lot for a 20 year old.

Good point with his legs and body being tired. He's never played as much as he's been playing and it's gotta be taking a toll on him and he's the type that probably won't say it.
BRIGGS @ 1/2/2016 1:07 PM
A pg would help kp. But kp could help himself by being more opportunistic by positioning closer to the basket and looking for 2nd chance points
meloanyk @ 1/2/2016 6:05 PM
So we should hold off booking a HOF after party? I was waiting to see when someone would take note of his declining fg%. It was low before and then creeped up to 45% before falling. Not sure why his shot is off, sometimes it appear flat, sometimes it is forced off undeveloped moves in post. I dont think he'll ever be a Nowitzi from outside (few are) but his scoring will come from many spots on the floor as he tightens his game and his D still makes him impactful right now
